All questions are compulsory . "Long Answer type Question (LAQ)" is a supply type question of 20 marks which requires a typical answer of about 60-80 lines in about 32-40 minutes. "Short Answer type Que~tion (SAQ}" is a supply type question of 5 marks which requires, atypical answer of about 15-20 lines in about 08-10 minutes. Use of a non-programmable type of scientific calculator is allowed. Draw neat diagrams wherever necessary. Assume suitable data if necessary .

b)

A rod of length '1' tapers uniformly from a diameter 'D' at one end to a diameter 'd'at the other end. Find the extension caused by an axial load 'P'. , ". A beam 10m long is simply supported at its ends and carries concentrated loads of 30kN and 50 kN at distances of 3m .from each end. Draw the shear force diagram and Bending moment, diagram. A timber beam 10 cm wide and 15 cm deep carries a uniformly distributed load over a span of 2m. If the permissible' stresses are 28N/mm2 longitudinally and 2N/nim2 transverse shear, calculate the maximUm load, which can be carried.

b) c)

State the various assumptions made in the plastic theory. A close-coiled helical spring has to absorb 50 Nm of energy when compressedto 5cm. The coil diameter is eight times the wire diameter. If there are 10 coils, estimate the diameter~ of coil and wire and the maximum shear stress. G = 85,000 N!mm2
. A flywheel is required with a moment of inertia of 250 kg.m2 It is to run at 250 rpm and the maximum stress is not to exceed 4N/mm2. Neglecting the inertia of the spokes'and assuming a width of 125 mm, find the thickness of the rim. Density = 7200 kg/m3. Explain the following metods of a hardness test : i) ii) Brinell-method Vicker Pyramid Diamond method. -::
