1. Overview
1.1 Introduction
EFFI-CYCLE is an intercollegiate design competition for undergraduate students which are a ime d at designing and fabricating an energy efficient hybrid human powered three wheeled electric vehicle. The vehicle must be aerodynamic, highly engineered and ergonomically designed. The design should be commercially viable as a product and should be attractive to the consumers because of its visual appearance, performance, reliability and ease of operation.

1.2 Purpose
Provide an opportunity for engineering students by setting up a trend of using ecofriendly vehicles in India and come up with some innovative designs. Students have to tackle real world engineering problems, work in multidisciplinary teams, practise design for manufacturing.

1.3 Competition Summary

The Competition includes designing, validating and fabricating a three wheeled vehicle driven by two drivers. The vehicle would be capable to be driven simultaneously as well as alternatively by two drivers and also alternatively or simultaneously on electricity. The vehicle would be evaluated for its design and performance and the teams compete against each other. The cumulative scores of all the events would decide the overall ranking of the teams in the event.

1.4 Vehicle Design, Analysis, and Construction

The research, analysis, and design of all vehicles entered by a college must be performed solely by current SAEINDIA student members of that college. Only fabrication assistance for things requiring outside assistance is allowed. Teams are expected to have full participation from all concerned people.

Teams can use both hydraulic and non hydraulic brakes that satisfy the minimum defined criteria of locking of brakes in a static condition. The brakes MUST be mounted to the wheel and not on the drive axle. Brakes may be tested in the Brake Test by pushing the vehicle in forward direction, by the volunteers. Drivers will be asked to apply the brakes. All wheels are required to be locked during this test. Also, brakes may be tested by allowing the vehicle to stop within the predefined distance after covering a specified distance in a set time.

NOTE:
If team is using hydraulic brakes then following conditions must be meet, 1. Rigid brake pipes must be mounted securely along the roll cage / other members as required to prevent damage in dynamic condition. Loosely hanging / pipes located by using ties / tapes etc shall not be permitted. to prevent damage in dynamic condition. 2. The bleed point location must lie on top of the calliper cylinders (vertically upward direction), without exception. 3. Braking on a jackshaft or through an intermediate reduction stage is prohibited. In the case of non hydraulic brakes: 1. The wire should have the proper plastic covering. There will be a virtual round in July. All participants will receive a certificate of participation. The detail guidelines will be updated on the website after the registration process is over.

8. Main Event
There will be two categories of events - Static events and Dynamic events.

8.1 Static Events

This phase includes the following events:

8.1.1 Technical Inspection

To ensure the safety of all the vehicles participating in the event, a technical inspection is done which includes a Go-no-Go gauge test, safety test and brake test. All teams must clear all these
14 | effi-cycle

tests in order to proceed for the dynamic events. Any team who fails to clear the technical inspection round will not be allowed to participate in the dynamic events. 1. The maximum dimension of any vehicle must not exceed as specified earlier. A Go-noGo gauge will be used to check the dimension of the vehicle. 2. Safety test will be done to ensure the safety of the vehicle as well as the driver. Vehicle will be tested on earlier specified safety issues (like role over protection, chain covers, wire harnessing, kill switches, etc.). 3. In brake test each vehicle will be given a run of 50 metres after which drivers have to apply brakes and the vehicle must stop within 15 metres.

8.1.2 Cost Event

Cost assessment (50 points) consists of two events- Cost report (20 points) and Cost evaluation (30 points). All teams have to submit a cost report that provides all the background information to verify vehicles actual cost. Cost report format will be made available online at the EFFI-CYCLE SAE INDIA website and teams shall follow the specified format only. Report should be submitted by the last date as given on the website. Each day is case of late submission will carry a penalty of reduction in 10% marks of total marks awarded. Cost evaluation will be done at the main event site where teams have to bring their cost report along with the bills of materials used in the fabrication of vehicle. Teams will be evaluated on the methodology adopted and knowledge of the cost report.

8.1.3 Design Event

The aim of the Design Event is to present an opportunity for the engineering students to develop an innovative human powered vehicle design, document it and present it to a panel of judges who will evaluate the design. Design assessment (200 points) consists of two events- Design report (50 points) and Design evaluation (150 points). The design report should explain in detail about the design process used in designing of each of the systems involved in the teams EFFI-CYCLE SAE INDIA vehicle. The process should include the Design description: Design objectives, design criteria, design alternatives considered, design calculation, customer requirements. Analysis: This section should include a structural analysis of rollover and side protection systems, examples of computer aided analysis such as FEA, CFD etc. And examples of additional calculations and analyses used in the design process. Conclusions should describe how the results were used to improve the design.

15 | effi-cycle

Safety: Should include analysis of potential hazards to both occupants or observers inherent in operating vehicles of this type in a general competition and describes the features incorporated in the vehicle to mitigate those hazards. The design analysis and result should be clearly mentioned. Final Design Report Format Design report format will be made available online at the EFFI-CYCLE SAE INDIA website and teams shall follow the specified format only.

Design Report Submission

Report should be submitted by the last date as given on the website. Each day is case of late submission will carry a penalty of reduction in 10% marks of total marks awarded.

Design Evaluation
Design evaluation will be conducted at the event site. Vehicles are expected to be presented for design evaluation in essentially finished condition, i.e. fully assembled, complete and-ready to-run. During design evaluation, team members are expected to be able to fully explain and discuss all aspects of their vehicles design and the rationale behind their design decisions. Design will be evaluated and points will be awarded in the following: Design Category Ergonomics Structure Methodology Technology Points 50 50 25 25

8.1.4 Marketing Presentation (50 points)

The objective of the Marketing Presentation is to provide an opportunity for the engineering students to convince the executives of a hypothetical manufacturing company to purchase their vehicles design and to put it into production. For the purpose of presentation teams may assume that the judges are a mixed group of corporate executives who may have experience in marketing, production, finance as well as in engineering. One or more team members may make the presentation to the judges. Following the presentation there will be a question answer round. Only the judges are permitted to ask questions. Teams should stress on points like the USPs of their vehicle, special features that set it apart from other designs, strategy they will adopt. 16 | effi-cycle

9. Rules for Dynamic Events 9.1 Timing Area

The timing and scoring area, located at the end of the speed trap, will be off limits to spectators and all others except the competition officials and the event timing staff.

9.2 Tally Board

The host organization will provide the staff a Tally Board o0n which vehicle speeds and standings can be posted. The Tally Board will be separated from the timing area.

9.3 Drivers Training

All drivers who will participate in the dynamic events must attend the Drivers training session when called on event day. The meeting will clarify operating procedures and signals and will identify courses features, hazards, landmarks and penalties which can be applied on team in case of not being driven safely. Any team that is not represented during this session would not be allowed to participate in race; in case of unavailability of driver during training session any team member can represent his team. In case of unavoidable absence, the team may file an appeal with the judging team, whose decision regarding participation will be final and without consideration of fees paid.

9.4 Fairing
All vehicles in all classes of the competition shall be equipped with a full or partial fairing to improve the aerodynamics and/or provide weather protection. This fairing must cover sufficient area on both sides and in front to provide adequate space for clearly displaying the vehicle number, SAE logo and college identification.
