The Art of Investment

The Art of Investment

I believe that global investment is an art. Like all arts, it encompasses creative, scientific and spiritual elements. As the investment universe encompasses the real world science of companies providing products and services to consumers, so it also encompasses the intangible world of stock markets where human emotions are often displayed in their extremities. Managing and mastering the frequent dichotomies between these two worlds is an Olympian challenge. It requires more than an understanding of business fundamentals it challenges all participants who aspire to excellence to examine both the world without and the world within. That elusive goal the secret of great investment requires the wisdom of the Greeks, the analytical capabilities of the scientist, the perception of the Renaissance artist and the detachment of the Oriental philosopher. My quest is ultimately quite simple. It is a search for truth. As such, it shares the world of scientists, artists and philosophers all who aspire to a knowledge and understanding of the complex world around us. I am inspired by the work of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Mozart and I recognise the hand of greatness at work. They are my standard-bearers. They have left a legacy which enriches and encourages me to elevate my profession to a vocation and my vocation to an art. Whilst natural talent is necessary for success, it is only a starting point. The pilgrimage to mastery begins in the school of apprenticeship and is forged in the furnace of life where courage, discipline and persistence are the gatekeepers to achievement. Indeed, the Renaissance artist Michelangelo observed: If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldnt seem so wonderful at all.

Once competent tradecraft has been grafted into the creative process, the artist can release the full potential of his talents. His work takes on both breadth and depth and continues to grow as experience and experimentation mature the artist and infuse his work. Just as there are many forms and styles of art, each reflecting the skills, talent and creativity of the artist, so there are many styles of investment. The most successful artists are those who are original, those who recognise their calling and understand what the Greek philosopher Socrates meant by know thyself. Their art, courageously authentic and perfected by their suffering journey towards truth, is their unique gift to all of us. I believe the world of investment is a stage for creative expression. My investment style and process reflect my personality, perspective and experience. I am consistently seeking to develop and refine my art so that it expresses all of my creative and productive potential. My thinking and my language employ words such as insight, imagination and creativity, as well as harmony, focus and execution. In mastering this art, the inner journey precedes and is the foundation of the external expression. The Greeks never wrote obituaries to mark the end of a persons life. They simply asked one question did he live with passion? Only when we discover our true calling for which we have been given specific gifts do we discover passion for life, for work, for others, for ourselves. When we work in a role that is in harmony with our calling and talents, we find the true freedom to create. My passion is my art allocating capital to the worlds best investment opportunities.
