Course Title: Social Dimensions of Education Course Description: This course is an introduction to social science (economic, socio-cultural, political, geographical and environmental processes) theory and research as they relate to education and to understanding of the four pillars of learning, which are fundamental in making critical and logical decision as an active member in the society and as global citizens. The course aims to enhance critical understanding and responding to the transformations in education, work, culture, globalization and subjectivity that have induced education, economic, socio-cultural, political, geographical and environmental networks. Course Credit: Pre-requisite: Course General Objectives (Broad competencies): At the end of the course, the pre-service teachers are expected to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. apply the classical and contemporary sociological theories in analyzing current social issues and social problems which affect human society; discuss and analyze relevant social science theories and research as they relate to education; appreciate and apply the basic assumptions made in social science studies in order to help them make critical and logical decisions; develop a sense of their role as teachers who are active members in the society and as global citizens responsible for the outcomes of their actions and for developing other citizens; develop a realization that local (or private) actions of teachers result in global (universal) or geographically dispersed consequences; and formulate their own understanding of the relation between or among the individual, the school and the society by applying the four pillars of learning 3 units
