Afghanistan
The Taliban gave safe haven to AL Qaeda, which allowed terrorists to plan and carry out attacks around the world. This is why the United Nations authorized a NATO/ISAF-led military intervention. Getting rid of the Taliban regime and AL Qaeda was only the first part of the job. The second is to make sure they cannot return.

Gibraltar
In 1992 the last British regular infantry battalion left Gibraltar, and was replaced by the royal Gibraltar regiment. Despite this, the headquarters staff appointments are still filled by members of the British armed forces. Each year territorial and regular army soldiers from Britain are given opportunities to spend two weeks in the colony to take part in low-level training.

Canada
The training area at BATUS is equivalent in size to the combined area all of the main training areas used by British Army in the UK and in Europe; Salisbury Plain Training Area would fit in 7 times over. 5 Battle groups, each containing approximately 1400 soldiers, are trained at BATUS each year. These MEDICINE MAN exercises, which can be up to 30 days in duration, are split into two phases; Live Fire and Tactical Effects Simulation (TESEX), the later with a live enemy. The TESEX system identifies when vehicles have

been fired at and damaged / destroyed and also informs soldiers when they are being fired at and if hit what injuries they have sustained.

Northern Ireland
Since 2000 the Battalion has helped to keep the peace in Northern Ireland through numerous operational tours in such places as Belfast, Londonderry, East Tyrone and South Armagh. Whether in the Counter-Terrorist or Riot Control role the Battalion has learnt vital skills we require to enforce peace worldwide.

Germany
British forces are stationed in Germany for reasons of national and NATO security with the agreement and support of the German government. The presence of the British and American troops provides mutual security and is a visible display of the UK support for its NATO allies. The UK has been a member of the north Atlantic treaty organisation since 1949.

Georgia

The United Kingdom reacted by sending a Task Force to the South Atlantic and imposing a naval and air blockade on the large Argentinean garrison on the Falkland Islands. South Georgia was recaptured, and a large logistics and staging post was set up on Ascension Island to support the Task Force.

Cyprus
The British Army in Cyprus works to a tri-service headquarters and is tasked with protecting the SBAs and associated retained sites.

Irag
Since 22 November 2009 the UK has maintained a small training force of around 150 British military personnel in Iraq. The majority of these forces (around 100) are based at the main Iraqi naval base in the southern port of Umm Qasr. These are mostly Royal Navy and Royal Marine personnel, and they are working alongside US colleagues to train and mentor the Iraqi Navy. They are there at the request of the Iraqi Government under our bilateral training and maritime support agreement which came into effect in November 2009.

Kosovo
Britain is to deploy hundreds of troops to Kosovo in a move likely to revive claims that the government is demanding too much from its armed forces. Senior military and defence officials have agreed to a

request from NATO to send a battle group based on 2 Rifles, a light infantry battalion of about 600 soldiers, to help maintain "public order" in the newly independent Balkan state. The Guardian, Friday 25 April 2008.

Kenya
Exercise GRAND PRIX is a regular exercise in Kenya run by the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK). Its aim is to train Battle Groups in an environment similar to Afghanistan and Iraq. Kenya provides the perfect opportunity for realistic training, as we deployed with elements of the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers who will be joining us in Afghanistan.

Brunei
The majority of the battalion's time in Brunei is devoted to jungle training. Most officers and senior NCOs will attend the Jungle Warfare course at some stage in their careers.

Liberia
Civil war in Liberia and Sierra Leone are for the same thing as these two countries are right next to each other. British army are peacekeeping over in Liberia.

The last 60 years saw the partial disintegration of the Commonwealth, but our data graphic shows that Britain has still been an active force around the world; a near-constant presence in all four corners of the globe
