GRAPHIC NOVELS & COMIC BOOKS FOR STORYTELLING

Human knowledge is based on stories and the human brain consists of cognitive machinery necessary to understand, remember and tell stories. Humans are storytelling organisms that both individually and socially, lead storied lives. Stories mirror human thought as humans think in narrative structures and most often remember facts in story form. Facts can be understood as smaller versions of a larger story. From ancient time storytelling is a part of our life. It evolved and matured in time with evolving means of communication right from the Rock art to the modern Digital media. A medium is a channel for communication, and includes familiar favorites such as radio, television, or the printed page. We always lookout for a better and more better way of communication. When it comes to storytelling Comic Books and Graphic Novels have a strong way of communication. As an art form, a comic book is a volume in which all aspects of the narrative are represented by pictorial and linguistic images encapsulated in a sequence of juxtaposed panels and pages. A graphic novel is a narrative work in which the story is conveyed to the reader using sequential art in either an experimental design or in a traditional comics' format. The term is employed in a broad manner, encompassing non-fiction works and thematically linked short stories as well as fictional stories across a number of genres. Most of the times they contain more pictures and less words. Feel of movement in illustration creates excitement and dramatic impact on reader. Characters from centuries-old myths have adorned the covers of childrens comic books in India for decades, but new waves of Graphic Novelists and Comic book

artists are emerging to shake up the art form. Their quest for ultra-Indian superheroes has created new crossover comics aimed at both children and adults. In a sign of how vibrant the industry has become, Indias first comic book convention Comic Con India, was held in February 2011 in New Delhi, drawing thousands. It was supported by Indian institute of cartoonist and Comic Institute of India, associated with Vimanica Comics. Main aim behind this convention is to showcase the best and brightest in the Indian Comic Community. The whole brain activity that is activated by reading comic books is what provides the comic book experience; a fulfilling fantasy involvement with the printed page that one gets from no other media. The comic book reading experience is the result of the interaction between what is on the page and the life experience and even the emotional state of each reader. Ketaki G.
