With summer quickly approaching and thousands of local young people graduating on from their current school year,

I am thankful for the incredible services that our community has to offer. Summer literacy, recreation, health, and mentorship programs not only help build character and selfesteem, they can also prevent youth from the critical summer learning loss and help instill positive life skills. One of the most positive outcomes noticed in the 2011 Healthy Kids Colorado Survey was youth engagement in extracurricular activities: 88% of local students feel like there are a lot of chances for students in their school to get involved in sports, clubs, and other activities outside of school 70% of local students participate in extracurricular activities, such as sports, band, drama or student government Recognizing the assets of participating in creative activities, sports, clubs, or other community programs, we can celebrate that our network of service providers is doing a phenomenal job engaging youth in positive activities. By collaborating our resources with community, non-profit groups and first responder agencies such as Central Mountains Regional Emergency Medical & Trauma Advisory Council (CMRETAC), Eagle River Youth Coalition (ERYC), Beaver Creek Public Safety, Eagle County School District, Eagle River Fire Protection District, Western Eagle County Ambulance District (WECAD), Gypsum Fire Protection District, Colorado State Patrol, Speak Up Reach Out, Starting Hearts, Vail Public Safety Communications Center (Vail Dispatch), Avon Police, Eagle County Ambulance District, Greater Eagle Fire Protection District, Vail Valley Medical Center, Think First and Eagle County Sheriff's Office manpower we have been extremely successful in making Eagle County a safer place to live. The Eagle County Prevention Committee has been able to offer Camp 911, teaching basic water safety, fire, traffic and bike safety as well as first aid and basic CPR/AED just to name a few for over 10 years. In addition the Prevention Committee provides FREE car seat checks and education at ECAD in Edwards the first Tuesday of every month from 3-6 pm. We are happy to announce that Eagle County has not had a child fatality as a result of a motor vehicle accident in over 5 years! International Day Against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking: June 26 Established by the UN General Assembly in 1987, the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) selects themes for the day and launches campaigns to raise awareness about the global drug problem. Health is the ongoing theme of the world drug campaign.

ERYC is now accepting applications for a Marketing & Special Project Coordinator AmeriCorps*VISTA. The aim of this position is to support the mission of ERYC and its member organizations by reducing poverty in Eagle County, thereby ensuring that all youth are able to reach their full potential. The coordinator will strengthen and support ERYC by building infrastructure, expanding community partnerships, securing long-term resources, and coordinating training opportunities. Duties will include development of a marketing and outreach plan, and capacity building within programs including the Youth Leaders Council, Dinner & Dialogue series, and Active Parenting, as well as support with special events. June 23 Learning about others isn't always an easy task, especially as a student from a different school. For Red Canyon High School sophomore Michael ElBitar, having the chance to shadow a student from Eagle Valley High School provided him with that opportunity. "It was a really fun project," he said. Through Eagle River Youth Coalition's Youth Leaders Council, El-Bitar not only shadowed a fellow member but was himself followed as well. Each student was left to make arrangements, get permission, and follow through with all other logistics. "It put it on our shoulders completely so we learned a lot from it," El-Bitar said. "I hope that the people who visited a different school got a good view of the other school and put aside some of the generalizations about the different schools." To read more, click here.
