A. Background: Mangkang is fisheries village located in west Semarang. This project will be the third year project organized by IIWC in answering the needs of preserving the coastal side of North Java Sea in Mangkang. About 1,1 km costal line in Mangkang area is now in danger due to the abrasion of the sea, cutting mangrove by local people and heavy force from the river flows. Before, many kinds of fish and shrimps are living there, but now since the condition of the mangrove forest is getting worse, it is quite difficult to find the species anymore. Fisherman also needs to go further to the ocean to fish and it means much work they need to do to earn money B. Project: Preserving natural diversity and sea shore from the abrasion because of no more mangrove and too strong waves from the ocean will be the main focus of the camp. Mangkang is the project site for IIWCs World Tanabata Action since 2008. It is a global project initiated by NICE Japan then was adopted by CCIVS UNESCO in the beginning of 2008 where volunteersin all over the world through IVS plant trees and hang their wishes in Tanzaku paper on a bamboo leaf. C. The aims of the camps are to initiate the project of protecting the sea shore, increase the awareness of the local people, the fisherman, and local students to protect their environment as well as their future. D. Work: Planting mangrove, and other trees for beach, environment education to local people and children, school visits for environment education and Olympic Games for environment. E. Special remarks: Very hot and less hygiene condition of poor coastal area, be ready with sun block and sun burnt. Bring some ideas for environment education (especially about mangrove and how to take care of it) and Olympic games for environment education for small children aged from 6-12 and adult. F. BWC 1113/ Semarang Needy Children Camp/ Demak Regency/ 05/07-18/07/ KIDS,EDU A. Background: Batu village is a small village in Karang Tengah Municipality Demak Regency, in the side of the famous North Java main land road. This small village is famous around the neighboring villages and areas because of the fact that 80% out of the 600 villagers, every Friday, will go to the street or mosques for begging money from the Friday pilgrimage people. To get more money, they will take their children with them because people will tend give money (or more money) to the children rather than to adults. This attitude of taking the children to beg for money becomes a problem when the children have to leave school every Friday. Furthermore, most children will prefer to go to street to beg to get money that they can easily spend rather than staying at school. As the result, the number of drop out children from school is quite high. Based on this condition, one of local NGOs working for the street children initiated an education project for the children by providing additional lesson in the afternoon for Math and English so that the children could get better mark and understanding of the subjects at school. It is expected that if the children get better mark and understanding at school then they and their parents will be proud of their work and the parents will not take them to the street for begging money anymore. Unfortunately, last year, there was no more funding available for this additional activity. Thus, the local NGO could not continue the project. The fact that IIWC has been working together with this local NGO in the same venue for work camp and that the work camp brought positive impact in engaging the children in the study atmosphere and creating interesting activities for the children that positively

reduce the chance and desire from parents to take the children to the street, IIWC sees it as an opportunity to do further intervention for their education purposes because it is very important to keep the children at school. B. Project: Support the children in Batu Village in term of their study in non-formal approach. C. The aims of this camp are to reduce the time spent on the street to earn money (or the chance that the children will be taken to the street by their parents to the street) and to motivate the children to focus more to their school, to give different perspective to the parents about education and the future of the children, to create community based activity for the children and the community bring about the education issue. D. Work: the volunteers will be assigned for: Organizing additional English class for street children (or children with high risk to be street children) in slump area of Batu Village in the afternoon as one of the strategies to reduce the time spent on the street for earning money and supporting their obligatory subject at school, Organizing leisure activities for the children on free times or public holidays emphasizing active participation of the children and promotion of children rights, Organizing skill development program for the children as one of the alternatives strategies to empower the children for the future way of income generating activities and Personal and public hygiene education for the children due to the fact that the children are living in a slum area with poor hygienic condition. E. Special Remarks: very challenging project because of complexity of social and economical problems. Volunteers are expected to be very open minded, independent and creative to join this project F. Location: Batu Village, Karang Tengah Minucipality, Demak Regency Central Java Indonesia. G. Accommodation: boarding house in a common Indonesian family (some of Indonesian family let one of more of the rooms in their house to be rented by students or other people based on monthly basis rent) with a simple Indonesian facilities standard. H. Language: English is a must, the knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) will be necessary because most of the target group DO NOT speak any English. I. There are 135 prostitutes working permanently in the area and much more will come at night as non permanent workers. Most of them work in the karaoke stores. The children in this area then have less chance to get theur right to play and to a good environment for their study. For this IIWC creates workcamp to support the vulnerable children. B. This is due to the lack of concern on this issue from all stakeholders in Tegalrejo prostitution area while IIWC found out that there is big chance for IIWC to address the issue. Since then 6 out of 7 workcamps organized in Tegalrejo have been implementing the projects for KIDS. C. Work: Activity with local children and youth D.
