Its as true today as when
Chicago recorded these lyrics
decades ago. All across America,
musicians will move outdoors, and
locally the tradition of summer con-
certs begins in the coming week,
with the 4 Js Combo performing at
Giampetro Parks Enrico Serra Band
Shell on June 18 and Tear It Up tak-
ing to the stage on June 20 at
Richlands Michael Debbi Park.
The Vineland series runs each
Monday night of the summer, with
Frank Marone and the Italians clos-
ing out the season on August 27. A
special Wednesday concert will be
held on July 4, featuring The
Cumberlads and the Red, White &
Blue Band.
The Richland concerts are on
Wednesdays through August 29,
when DJ Nicky G. finishes the sea-
son there. Also, Bellview Winery is
midway through its Jazz in June
Saturday concert series.

The Rotary Club of Vinelands Annual Scholarship and
Recognition event was held on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at the
Ramada Inn and included the presentation of 12 different
scholarships to 20 local students.

summer concent series. Outdoor music series are also hosted at
Giampetro Park in Vineland and Bellview Winery in Landisville.

A Parable
John and Mary are known in their com-
munity to be a very well-to-do couple. John
has owned and managed a very prosperous
business for many years. From time to time
there have been crises in their lives that have
caused them to go into debt, but they have
always dug their way out and paid their bills.
One day, John comes home from a busi-
ness trip and his wife greets him at the door.
She says, While you were away, I fixed every-
thing! Remember how you said that you are
concerned about the people in our town that
dont have jobs? I have hired most of them.
The bumpy streets that you have complained
about, Im hired 200 people to fix them.
Remember how weve said, The children
are our future? I have hired 1,000 people to
build a new school and they have already
made a good start on it. Were going to make
sure that no child gets left behind.
Remember how weve said, I wish there
was more we could do for the homeless? I
have taken care of that. I am building houses
for all of them. John says, Where did you
get the money for all of this? Mary says, It
wasnt hard! We have always paid our bills. I
just asked the credit card companies to
increase our debt ceiling and they were happy
to do so. I went to all of the local banks and
they were all happy to loan the money for
these worthy projects because they know you
always pay your bills, John. I also borrowed a
few million from your Chinese associates and
gave it to the poor people in town.
John replies, Mary, we could have done
all of these things and more. I was about to
make a big investment in my company to dra-
matically increase production, but now you've
wiped out my bank account and there is noth-
ing left. Now we are ruined!
You may have guessed by now that this little
parable is about the U.S. economy. John is the
American taxpayer, and Mary is the govern-
ment. While it is true that the American tax-
payer has been very productive, caring, and
generous, his wealth has been promised far
beyond his ability to pay. And now he is ruined.
Another great civilization falls into the Used
to Be Great column of history along with
Egypt, Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome.

Arts Need More Than Lip Service
There has been much discussion about the
way in which student cumulative averages are
calculated. I do not really wish to comment
on that aspect, with the exception of congrat-
ulating all of the students who have worked
so hard, to make education a priority. I can
only hope that the matter can be resolved, but
there is another consideration that has long
been ignored or tolerated. That would have to
do with the fine and performing arts. These
courses should also be weighted, due to the
amount of personal and team effort each stu-
dent must put into them. Many academic stu-
dents who are also talented in fine and per-
forming arts do not take these classes because
they are not weighted and can actually nega-
tively affect the overall average. Many of these
courses carry additional credits, but still lack
the weight to push the averages higher.
No one likes to hear the When I was a
boy... stories, but when I took part in band and
choral activities, each course was worth 2.5
credits. We worked hard to perform, but there
were few extra benefits. There were no compe-
titions, very little in the way of local scholar-
ships. You simply did your best. The cold-war-
era thinking that existed into the 1960s pre-
pared you for college or the work force, with
few other choices. You were trained as brain or
brawn and that was the extent of it.
We have allegedly come so far from that
thinking, extolling creativity, multiple intelli-
gences, free thinking, finding your dream and
other great-sounding catch phrases, but what
have we done to place themin the realmof seri-
ous academics? The 1960s model still appears
to be in place. It is time for lip service to end!
Many of our students excell [in local per-
formances and exhibits] and many hours go
into these events and they contribute not only
to the performance or exhibit, but also to
overall study skills, teamwork, memory,
sequencing, history, culture and social issues.
These events can lead to understanding!
From an academic perspective, these
events may not involve scientific or math for-
mulas or equations, but has anyone thought
about dancing steps, learning to play an instru-
ment, ear training, voicing, artistic techniques,
musical theory? These may prove to be as
challenging, plus they offer entertainment,
beauty and positive acclaim to the community.
I would like to request that all boards of
education and members of the administration
take a closer look at creating an equal playing
field for these students.

Class Rank: Level the Playing Field
I can understand the desire and drive of the
students to achieve the rank of class valedicto-
rian. Unfortunately, there currently seems to be
too many ways students can gain unfair advan-
tage over other students in their pursuit of aca-
demic excellence. I would suggest the follow-
ing changes be effective for the coming aca-
demic school year in September. Coursework
successfully completed at the high school com-
plex will be the only determining factor in
arriving at class rank. Any classes completed
outside of the Vineland High School campus
will be for student enrichment purposes only
and not have any bearing in calculating the
grade point average. Students should not be
allowed to skip lunch to take an additional
course to inflate their grade point average.
Advance Placement courses that the students
take should continue as they have in the past.
The guidance counselors play a pivotal role as
they advise the students concerning their
course selections throughout their four years at
VHS. These changes would make for a more
level playing field for all students.

Conley Graduates
With Honors
On May 18, Blanche Conley graduat-
ed from Wilmington University with
Bachelor of Science degree in
Psychology. She was inducted into the
Delta Epsilon Rho Honor Society for
being on the Dean's List for three con-
secutive semesters. She also received
Academics Honors as Cum Laude for a
cumulative GPA of 3.7.
A graduation celebration was given
by Mark Conley (husband) at the
Ramada Inn Hotel in Vineland in honor
of her accomplishments. More than 70
guests attended. She will continue her
studies in the Master's program at
Wilmington University this fall in
Mental Health and specializing in
Psychological Testing.
Martini Graduates

Frank S Martini Jr., son of Frank and
Lynn Martini of Vineland, recently graduat-
ed from Rowan University with a BA degree
in Psychology and a Specialization in Child
Behavior Services. Frank will continue his
education at Rowan in the fall, working

are to become a school psychologist.

Local Dance Students Excel During Competition
Students from The Arts of the Dance Centre participated in the Backstage
Performing Arts Competition on Sunday, May 20, 2012 and took home a plat-
inum trophy, two high-gold trophies and a gold trophy. Their Modern perform-
ance to a Lion King medley, choreographed by Adele Harwas, also won them the
high score award in their age category for the entire competition. Also in com-
petiition was a solo by Gabriela Leone and a trio performed by Lia DOrio, Olivia
Leone and Samantha Ruessboth of which were choreographed by Cadhla
Horsey. A Contemporary dance choreographed by Alexis Acevedo-Ahl competed
as well. Congratulations to everyone for a job well done.
Wedding Announcement
Landon and Logan Gentile are
pleased to announce the marriage of
Justin Gentile to Nicole Adamson (aka
Mommy and Daddy). The couple has
been in love since they were 11 years
old, and on March 28, with their two
boys, and their moms, dads, and sib-
lings, they were married at Vineland
City Hall.
The ceremony was followed by a din-
ner at Larrys II to celebrate.
They plan to honeymoon in Atlantic
City soon and it will also celebrate their
10 years of being in love.

Justice Opens at Cumberland
Mall
Fashion-forward youngsters are now
able to shop for the runwayand the
boardwalkas Justice recently opened at
Cumberland Mall. The 4,408-square-foot
retailer, located in the Marshalls Wing
across from BAM!, opens in time for area
tweens to update their summer wardrobe.
Benefit Dinner for Seriously
Ill Child
A macaroni and meatball benefit dinner
for eight-year-old Joshua Browne is sched-
uled for Wednesday, June 13, at 6 p.m. at
the North Italy Club on Virano Lane.
Browne is the son of Michele Browne
from the City of Vineland License and
Inspections Department, and Matthew
Browne of the Vineland Police
Department. Since April 1, doctors at
South Jersey Medical Center, DuPont
Hospital, and currently Childrens
Hospital, have been unable to diagnose
Joshuas illness.
The dinner will help raise funds for the
Browne family to defray the cost of extra
medical expenses, traveling, and lodging
while Joshua is undergoing treatment.
Tickets are $12 each and can be pur-
chased at the Mayor's Office, Dept. of
Licenses and Inspections, or the North
Italy Club.
Progresso and General Mills
Offer Grants to Non-Profits
The Community Relations Program at
Progresso/General Mills invites 501C3,
non-profit organizations in the region
with programs focusing on nutrition and
fitness in children to apply for a grant.
Although the primary focus of grant
criteria is for programs dealing with nutri-
tion and fitness in children, consideration
will also be given to a small percentage of
childrens programs focusing on the arts,
education, or youth mentoring.
They are accepting applications from
qualified organizations until June 15, 2012.

Applications must be submitted online;
applications submitted by any other
method may not be considered.
The General Mills Foundation with the
help of the Progresso Plant Grant Team
has given $70,000 back to the community
in the last fiscal year.
PAL Holds Eight-Week
Day Camp
The Vineland Police Department will
be holding a Police Athletic League (PAL)
eight-week day camp this summer, under
the direction of Patrolman Albert Vargas,
an officer with the departments juvenile
unit.
The camp is open to children ages 8 to
12 who live in Vineland. The program will
begin on June 25 and end on August 17.
Hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Highlights of the camp include:
Breakfast, lunch and snacks available;
Outdoor playground;
Complete air-conditioned facility;
T-shirts for all campers; and
Local trips (movies, bowling, skating
rink etc.)
Cost is $480, or $60 per week. There
is no credit for vacation weeks out of the
program. A two week deposit of $120 is
necessary for those who wish to pay
weekly. This deposit will be applied to
weeks 7 and 8. The deposit is non-
refundable if you choose to drop out of
the program prior to completion. There
is also a $20 application fee payable upon
registration.

County Older Americans Art
Exhibit & Competition
The Cumberland County Office on
Aging and Disabled has organized the
38th Annual Art Exhibit and Competition
for older Americans in Cumberland
County. The exhibit will be on display
through June 29, in the Gant room of the
Millville Public Library, located at 210
Buck Street, Millville.
The annual competition is for both
professional and non-professional artists
age 60 and over in Cumberland County.
Categories of competition for original
works of art are: Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor,
Sculpture, Print, Pastel, Drawing, Mixed
Media, Photography, Computer Imagery
and Craft.
Registration deadline for this years
competition was May, 11th, and over 80
entries were submitted and winners were
selected. Opening reception was June 1.
1st Place Winners in each respective
category may be eligible to compete in the
September/October 2012 New Jersey
Senior Citizen Juried Art Contest and
Exhibition.

hilltops, the beach, isolated sheds, tractors,
farm equipment, motorcycles, golf carts,
golf clubs and bikes-anything with metal.
If you are in a forest and cannot get to
your car, take shelter in a low area under a
thick growth of small trees.
Boaters should get to land and find
shelter immediately.
If you feel your hair standing on end,
lightning is about to strike. Squat low to the
ground on the balls of your feet. Place your
hands over your ears and your head between
your knees to make yourself the smallest
target possible. Dont lie flat on the ground.
If someone is struck by lightning,
immediate care must be provided when
safely possible. Call 9-1-1. The victims
body will not retain an electrical charge.
Check for breathing, pulse and begin res-
cue breathing or CPR as appropriately
needed. Monitor victims condition.

Cross, which provide first aid and CPR

Landis Sea Isle
Project
It involved acquisition of land from the owners of
Ludlams Island, a venture that occupied a good
amount of time in the life of Vinelands founder.
T
he year 1880 proved pivotal in
Charles K. Landiss development
of his Sea Isle project. In addi-
tion to preparations for a railway
in the area, a significant amount of plan-
ning and paperwork, including the acquisi-
tion of land from current owners of
Ludlams Island property, occupied consid-
erable time in the life of Vinelands founder.
In early 1880, people were already
interested in purchasing lots on Ludlams
Island. Landis, in a February 2 diary entry,
addressed his enthusiasm and concern for
the funding of his new endeavor. I live in
the hope of getting this enterprise start-
ed, he writes. It is dreadful to be able to
see what can be done, & then be cramped
for the want of a little means. Perhaps this
is a part of the discipline we are destined
to undergo in this world of probation.
The despairing tone of the entry
reflected the founders recent travails.
Struggling with debts and alienated from
Vineland political circles, Landis used his
diary to not only record his business and
social activities, but to lament and ponder
his situation. He seemed to find comfort
in reading Miguel de Cervantess Don
Quixote, a book that served as a compan-
ion during his early work in developing
Sea Isle. In a January 29, 1880, diary entry,
the epic novel provided a revelation.
Read Don Quixote during the day, the
journal reports. Poor enthusiast! It set me
thinking. I think there has been a good
deal of the Quixote about some of my own
experience. All enthusiasm, instead of rec-
ognizing the cold selfish logic of the
world.
Despite his outlook, Landis continued
his pursuits undaunted, like Cervantess
protagonist. By February 14, he had
arranged for more money for Ludlams
Island in order to pay for the rest of the
title and to prepare a road to the island.
That project would require the passage of
a bill in the state senate, which would be
completed the following month, allowing
for the creation of what Landis termed a
wagon road to the Island [that] opens up
all the Island on the coast to the main
land. All of these accomplishments he
found encouraging.
By April 1880, the process of procuring
titles to Ludlams Island properties was
slowly nearing completion. Landiss chief
clerk, John L. Burk, had spent the previ-
ous months tracking down landowners
and on April 3, Vinelands founder wrote
that he had decided to send Mr. Burk out
West to get signatures for the Island to
close it up if possible The clerk was
dispatched later in the month to Ohio and
Illinois, returning May 3 with what
Landis called a good many signatures for
the Island.
Burk shared with his employer
accounts of the locations he had just visit-
ed. The information triggered in Landis a
need to re-evaluate his local achievements.
Mr. Burk gives glowing accounts of the
West, he writes in his May 4 diary entry.
He says that I stand well there. Wonder if
my efforts would not have been more for-
tunate for myself out West than in N.J. In
this state I have never received any kind of
recognition for what I have done & never
had any assistance. Have never been
placed upon a single State Committee or
recognized in any way, whilst many honors
have been heaped upon men who have
never done anything for the State, the pub-
lic, or any but themselves.
Landis spent much of May and early
June planning. Traveling by train and sail
boat, he joined John Wright, a Camden
County resident and heir to the fortune
held by the Cooper family, and other asso-
ciates in the Sea Isle venture for a tour of
the island on May 28, declaring afterwards
that the party appeared to be pleased.
On June 19, the Brief of the Title of
Ludlams Island was completed and sent
to Judge Clements in Haddonfield for
review. Landis seems to have grown impa-
tient with the gradual progress of the
enterprise, but maintained a busy sched-
ule that always included the development
of new ideas for his current venture. He
would have to be tolerant of the pace of
his project for nearly another year before
promotion could begin I

the title of 2012 New Jersey Winery of

Jersey Tomatoes
Its nearly time for tomatoes on the vine, as blooms
turn to Jersey gold.
T
omatoes are more than just
another healthy vegetable for
me. (Never mind that theyre
classified scientifically as a fruit.)
Instead, they are a sort of magic, mystical
metaphor for summer itself.
In the pre-hydroponic/greenhouse era,
our first exceptional Jersey tomatoes
wouldnt arrive until around July 4th, then
lasting pretty much until the falls first frost.
These days, thanks to advances in
indoor growing technology, they begin to
show by early spring. Especially in a year
like weve had, with a mercifully brief and
modest winter.
I always tend them in various varieties
given what limited space is availablealong
with plenty of their natural dance partner,
aromatic, glorious basil.
By the way, did you know that plant
Ocimum Basilicum by definitionderives
its name from the Greek word basileus, or
King; hence its appellation The King of
Herbs?
Most of the time, I buy tomatoes close to
a flowering state, right about now in June.
This year, fully ensconced at a new
home with a larger outdoor space, I opted
to change that strategy and start my own
plants from seed.
Specifically, seeds rather generically
labeled as Heirloom without further
elaborating on their genetic lineage.
So, itll be a bit of a surprise when they
begin arriving, whether were talking about
soft red Brandywines, striped Green Zebras
or our personal favorite, lusty Cherokee
Purples. Nurturing them in a cantilevered
upstairs bathroom window whose radiant
heat served as a warm, brilliant greenhouse,
I had close to two dozen by early May.
Three of them ended up, appropriately
enough, in my mothers yard just east of
Vinelands city center. I say appropriate-
ly because in that very same plot of land
my grandfather cultivated the most spec-
tacular, jungle-like bushes of tomato that
Ive ever encountered.
In those days the concept of Heirloom
was unknown, so we instead depended
upon varieties like Rutgers, Beefsteaks, Big
Girls (and sometimes Boys) plus the requi-
site plums and pears for tomato sauces.
Growing them against the back wall of
his garage under intense, 16-hour a day
sunshine, he often produced plants that
exceeded eight feet in height.
While I dont expect anything quite that
dramatic, it made me feel great to be con-
tinuing that fine family tradition.
Those which remained with me at the
shore, lingering on my front porch, proved
to be more of a dilemma. They began to

busy to give themthe attention they desper-
ately need in order to continue flourishing.
So, just as soon as I submit this already-
tardy column, Ill be heading out into my
fenced yard to complete some serious
transplantation.
For you novice gardeners out there, Ill
now share a few words of wisdom on the
fine art of tomato cultivation.
They should be staked just as soon as
possible, which actually assists the plant in
supporting extra weight, which will occur
just as soon as first fruits begin to appear.
Some folks I know believe in a system of
trimming off the top few leaf shoots that
are not already laden with flowers/buds. I
choose not to pursue that route, instead
opting for a careful system of ropes and
tiestrash can twist-types work surprising-
ly wellin order to provide the plants with
additional strength.
As for those monolithic metal tomato
cages you see in hardware stores this time
of year, I have mixed emotions.
While they do a nice job of keeping gar-
den pests like rabbits and birds at bay, I
find them obtrusive and feel they make reg-
ular pruning more difficult. What I like
instead is to purchase a sheet of thin mesh
plastic and arrange it atop the rows of
tomato, like a soft blanket. This both allows
easy access and serves as a barrier for those
aforementioned varmints.
When transplanting, be sure to thor-
oughly soak the ground first. You will be
surprised at just how much H

0 is neces-
sary, particularly given the sandy nature of
southern New Jerseys otherwise rich soil.
When fertilizing, try to gently pour liq-
uid over the plant and all foliage. This
allows those leaves and flowers to directly
absorb the nutrients, rather than waiting
for them to work up from roots.
Finally, check each piece of fruit as it
ripens for pests. Losing a few tomatoes is
pretty much to be expected, but proper
due diligence of this sort will eliminate
massive problems.

Brownlee Holds Leukemia & Lymphoma Fundraiser
On May 16th, Ronald Brownlee and his fundraising team held an event for
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Man or Woman of the Year 2012 at The
Black Olive Restaurant on Brewster Road in Vineland. Ten percent of the total
meals served for the day were donated in honor of Ronald K. Brownlee, Jr. for
the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of NJ, for the purposes of research in the
battle for a cure against blood cancers.

Household Hazardous
Waste Recylcing Day
On Saturday, June 16, the Cumberland
County Improvement Authority, in associ-
ation with the City of Millville, the Landis
Sewerage Authority, and the Cumberland
County Utilities Authority, will sponsor
the second Household Hazardous Waste
and Electronics Recycling Day of 2012.
The first event attracted over 510 cars and
30,000 pounds of electronics and thou-
sand of pounds of hazardous material.
Residents may bring their household gen-
erated hazardous waste and electronics to
the County Complex on Route 49 in
Bridgeton from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This event is reserved specifically for
Cumberland County residents. Residents
are allowed to dispose of the following
itemsgasoline and kerosene, pesticides
and herbicides, household batteries, oil-
based paints, turpentine and thinners, and
other solvents. Residents are limited to
150 pounds or 20 gallons of material per
trip. Residents can also recycle their elec-
tronics items, such as computers, moni-
tors, keyboards, TVs, VCR and DVD play-
ers, stereos and cell phones. No small
quantity commercial generators of haz-
ardous material will be allowed to dispose
of their waste during these clean-up
days, said Cumberland County Recycling
Coordinator Dennis DeMatte Jr.
The Cumberland County Improvement
Authority reminds residents that they can
dispose of water-based latex paint any
time provided it is first dried out.
Open the paint can and add some kitty
litter or sand to the containers and keep
open to allow to dry, explained DeMatte.
You can discard the closed paint can with
your regular trash. Residents are also
reminded that changes in federal regula-
tions combined with less hazardous battery
components mean the typical household
AAA, AA, C, D and 9-volt batteries now fall
below the federal and state hazardous

Pet Celebration
Members of the Cumberland County
4-H Goat Club will have some goats at
Tractor Supply in Bridgeton on Saturday,
June 16, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the TSC Pet

tus of warmwater fishing in the area and

Two Receive All South Jersey Recognition
Two Vineland Public Schools student musicians
recently received recognition through competitive
auditions for their instrumental talents, said Craig
Phillips, who teaches violin, viola, cello and string
bass for Vineland students in grades 6-12.
Leilani Bishop, a Vineland High School junior,
was selected to perform as first harpist with the
All South Jersey Senior High Orchestra and the All
South Jersey Senior High Symphonic Band.
Sean Freeman, a grade 8 violinist at Veterans
Memorial School, was chosen to join the All South
Jersey Junior High School String Orchestra.
Bishop is a Magna Cum Laude scholar who
has won numerous awards for harp performance,
according to Phillips, who works with two student
string ensembles in Vineland's Middle Schools
and one at the High School Level. Bishop is also a
member of the VHS Madrigals and Select Choir. A three-year member of the
Middle School String Ensemble, she is in her third year as a member of the High
School String Ensemble. She plans to continue playing harp at VHS and to audi-
tion for All South Jersey again in the fall.
Freeman is a National Junior Honor Society scholar, serves as the organiza-
tion's treasurer and will appear on the Principal's List for the year. Freeman is also
Vice President of Student Council and is a member of the Fitness Club, Science
Club and Soccer Club. He has been a member of the Middle School String
Ensemble since grade 5 and will be participating in the high school's string ensem-
ble class in his freshman year. He also plans to audition for All South Jersey Sr
High Orchestra, said Phillips.

LEAP Students Present Work Excellence
The Vineland Public Schools held its second annual Learners With
Exceptional Abilities (LEAP)"Evening of Excellence" at the district administra-
tion office on May 14, said Ross Stanger, Supervisor of Instruction.
Approximately 150 students, parents and family members attended the event,
which featured examples of work created by students in grades 3-8 who partici-
pated in the enrichment component of the LEAP Program. Dr. Mary Gruccio,
superintendent of Schools, also showed her support and spoke to parents at the
event.
On display were models of rockets, buildings, and DNA sequences, as the
students participated
in multidisciplinary
projects that focused
on rocketry, skyscrap-
ers, and crime scene
investigations. Skills
developed included
learning about the
steps and challenges
associated with build-
ing skyscrapers, tra-
jectory and variables
associated with space
flight, and the many
parts of investigating
crimes such as finger-
printing. Exhibits of
all shapes, sizes, and designs emphasized student creativity and demonstrated
through models and photos what students accomplished and studied.
Other projects involved independent student investigations in which middle
school students researched projects of their choice and crafted projects through
different media, said Stanger. Intermediate students also studied science and
math-based projects involving science, technology, engineering, and math
(S.T.E.M.) such as trebuchets, solar powered cars, and bridges.
Petway Elementary Salutes Role Models
Petway Elementary School celebrated its Sixth Annual Role Model Breakfast on
May 25. Since 2007, Petway's fifth-graders have been inviting their adult role mod-
els to this special event that integrates many areas of the curriculum.
This year, as in the past, students wrote essays thanking their role model for
their positive influ-
ence. These role
models included
teachers, family
members, coaches,
church leaders,
dance instructors,
and neighbors.
Role models were
invited to attend
the special break-
fast and were hon-
ored for making a
difference in the
life of a student.
Students presented their role models with a certificate holder that included botha
certificate and the essay written about them.
Students also presented their role models with a pin provided by the New Jersey
Education Association, stating, "You're an Inspiration."
The building administrators, Mrs. Jennifer Frederico and Mrs. Karen Malatesta,
greeted their guests and students, providing words of encouragement to all.
"True role models are those who possess the qualities we would like to have, and
those who affected us in a positive way," said Mrs. Frederico. "Thats what you are to
the children around you. We hope that one day our Petway Patriots will be role
models for somebody else, and they will lead the future in a positive direction."
Dr. Mary Gruccio, Interim Superintendent, was also in attendance.
"Sometimes we dont realize that were being a role model to someone," said Dr.
Gruccio. "But the things we say and do, and how we say and do them, sometimes
impact a childs life for many years to come, and we dont even realize it at the time."

Rossi School Scores High at Music Festival

Gold/Superior rating
at the recent
WorldStrides Heritage
Music Festival in New
York City, said
Tammy Monahan,
Rossi principal. Also
honored at the com-
petition was Dimitri
Raimonde, a grade 8
student-musician.
Raimonde received
the Maestro Award
for outstanding music
performance. He was
one of only 10 students of more than 700 participating to receive this award and the
only middle school student.
Of the 30 groups from all over the U.S. and Canada who performed in the multi-
day festival, the Rossi Band also earned the prestigious Spirit Award. This award is
given to a single group that best demonstrates character and courtesy to the
judges, festival coordinators and other performing groups.
With its accomplishment, the Rossi Band was invited to participate in the
National Festival of Gold. As a part of the Elite Performance Series, this prestigious
festival is designed to offer talented ensembles the chance to celebrate musical
artistry in some of the premier performance venues across the nation. Selected
ensembles must meet the highest standards to participate in Festival of Gold.
The band is considering options to perform in the Festival of Gold at one of sev-
eral world-renowned venues, including The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and
Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Deadline Extended for
N.J. Senior Tax Rebate
Gov. Christie Expands Access to Property Tax Relief,
Extends Homestead & Senior Freeze Deadlines to Oct. 19

overnor Chris Christie, acting to
ensure that more New Jerseyans
receive property tax relief, has
extended the deadlines for Homestead
Benefit and Senior Freeze applications to
Friday, October 19, Treasurer Andrew
Sidamon-Eristoff said.
This Administrations goal is to make
certain that every eligible taxpayer has the
opportunity to apply for these property tax
benefits, Treasurer Sidamon-Eristoff said.
Seniors and disabled New Jerseyans who
may have been unaware of the old dead-
lines now have ample time to file for both
their Homestead Benefit credits and Senior
Freeze payments.
Senior Freeze applications were due on
June 1. The Homestead Benefit application
deadline was June 30. Benefits for both
programs will be based on past property tax
payments.
The Senior Freeze, officially known as
the Property Tax Reimbursement program,
is available to homeowners or mobile home
owners who are 65 years or older who have
low or moderate incomes, or to disabled res-
idents who receive federal Social Security
payments. The Division of Taxation mailed
Senior Freeze applications to current and
newly eligible participants in February.
Taxpayers who think they might be eligible
also can get applications by contacting the
Senior Freeze hotline at 1-800-882-6597
from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.
Senior Freeze participants receive a
check based on the difference between cur-
rent property taxes and the property taxes
paid on the first year of eligibility in the
program. Reimbursement checks for eligi-
ble senior and disabled residents who file
this years applications by the original filing
deadline of June 1 are scheduled to be
mailed in mid-July. Checks for eligible
applicants who file after the original June 1
deadline will be processed and delivered as
quickly as possible thereafter.
The Homestead Benefit program pays
credits against local property taxes. Under
the budget proposed by Governor Chris
Christie, New Jersey resident homeowners
who earned $75,000 or less in 2011 will
receive the credits, as will senior or dis-
abled taxpayers who earned $150,000 or
less. The value of the credits appears on
local property tax bills.
The Division of Taxation mailed applica-
tion packets for this years Homestead
Benefit in early May. Homeowners who
filed last years Homestead Benefit applica-
tions online and indicated that they wanted
to receive this years application electroni-
cally were sent an e-mail containing
instructions for downloading their applica-
tion packet.

ew Jersey has adopted new regu-
lations effective April 2, 2012 that
will affect many homeowners in
Cumberland County. Now, homeowners
who have a private septic need to make
sure that their septic system does not
include a cesspool or a leaching pit.
According to the new code (*N.J.A.C.
7:9A-3.6(b) in case you want to look it up):
Effective June 2, 2012, all cesspools, priv-
ies, outhouses, latrines and pit toilets that
are part of a real property transfer shall be
abandoned and replaced with a system in
accordance with (a) above."
Not to get too down and dirty with the
code, (a) above outlines how the replace-
ment must be done. If, during the sale of
your home, or your home purchase, you
have the septic inspection performed and
discover that the septic system includes a
cesspool, the Health Department must be
notified, in writing, within 48 hours of
discovery and they will assist with infor-
mation on how to proceed.
But listen up homeowners, it's not only
during the sale of the home that you need
to be compliant with these regulations.
They also threw in code *N.J.A.C. 7:9A-
3.4(c)this basically says that the home-
owner or their septic company must
immediately notify the local health depart-
ment upon detection of a potentially non-
compliant system. Again, this section is
NOT dependent on real estate transfers or
inspections. It is applicable anytime a non-
compliant system is detected.
For real estate transactions, regardless
of the type of inspection performed dur-
ing a real estate transfer, if the owner or
their agent becomes knowledgeable that a
potentially malfunctioning or potentially
non-compliant system exists, they are
required to notify the health department
of the condition. For more information

Buds Pet Care Marks 25 Years
Buds Pet Home Care, LLC, of Vineland,
professional pet sitters, celebrated its 25th
anniversary last month. The company is
operated by William Bud Sulzman, his
wife of 23 years, Eloise, and their daughter,
Wendy, and was founded in May, 1987.
Caring for the pets of more than 600
clients in Cumberland County and sur-
rounding areas, ranging from tree frogs to
horses, Buds clientele is 95 percent repeat
business and he is consistently recom-
mended by area veterinarians. For a set,
reasonable fee, clients can get services
daily, weekly, during vacation times or for
special occasions, hospital stays, and emer-
gencies. Service can start immediately.
Most of Buds care is of cats and dogs,
but his services are not limited to pet sit-
ting. He brings in the mail and newspa-
pers, has arranged snow plowing and
cleaned autos during snowstorms, report-
ed problems in the home when he noticed
them, stayed while home repairs were
being done, unplugged appliances in
response to customer calls, assisted clients
in locating new pets, and helped clean up
puppies after their birth. He cleaned up a
flooded cellar, installed a new lock in a
front door, and buried a pet at the clients
request. Usually these kind and useful
services were done at no additional cost.
My greatest experience was dealing
with the death of a client who had no living
relatives in the United States, Bud said. He
located relatives in Canada who authorized
himto be administrator of the estate. He
cleaned up the property and sold the house.
He arranged for the client to be buried next
to her mother and grandmother and bought
the monument. He brought her dog home
and, when she passed, had her cremated
and scattered the ashes on the gravesite.
Bud even located property in Europe
owned by the late clients grandmother.

Small Animal Show
The Cumberland County 4-H Invitational
Rabbit, Cavy & Small Animal Show is set
for Saturday, July 7, 10 a.m. at the County
Fairgrounds on Carmel Road in Millville.
The deadline for early-bird registration is
June 20. Registrations will be accepted
until July 2 with a $1 per animal late fee.
This event, held in conjunction with the
Cumberland County Fair (July 2-7), is host-
ed by the Cumberland 4-H Program and
the Bunny Brigade 4-H Club. Trophies will
be awarded to the Cavy, Rabbit & Small
Animal Best in Show and Cavy, Rabbit &
Small Animal Best Reserve in Show.Best
of Breed rosettes and Best of Breed
Reserve rosettes will be awarded for Cavy,
Rabbit & Small Animal when the breed is
represented by at least five different
exhibits and three different exhibitors. For

Dog Fun Show at Fair
Do you own a cute dog? Does your dog
have a loud bark? Does your dog like to get
dressed up? Does your canine buddy have a
great trick? If you answered Yes to any of
these questions then you should participate
in the 4-H Dog Fun Show at the
Cumberland County Fair on Monday, July
2, 7:30 p.m. The show will be held in the 4-
H Activity Tent at the Cumberland County
Fairgrounds located at 3001 Carmel Road
in Millville. Registration begins at 7 p.m.
This event, which is being hosted by the
leaders and members of the Cumberland
County 4-H Dog Clubs, is open to both the
public-youth and adults. Classes include
Shortest Tail (that wags), Longest Tail,
Highest Jumper, Cutest Dog, Best Trick,
Best Costume, Treat Catching and Owner-
Pet Look Alike (without costume). Prizes
will be awarded in each category.
All dogs must have received a rabies
vaccination and be brought to the
Fairgrounds on a leash or in a pet carrier.
For the safety of your pet, please bring
water for your dog and DO NOT leave your
dog in the car. Having your dog in a warm
car, even during evening hours, can cause
heat stroke resulting in seizures and death
of the dog. Aggressive dogs will not be
allowed on the Fairgrounds.
The Cumberland County 4-H Dog Clubs
and their leaders hosting this event are the
Bow Wows 4-H Club led by Linda Lemmo
of Upper Deerfield; the Tailwaggers 4-H
Club led by Pam Demmy of Vineland and
Jennifer Lloyd of Bridgeton and the Paw
Shakers 4-H Club headed by Nina Paulaitis
of Cedarville.

ballet based on William
Shakespeares story
and the music of Felix
Mendelssohn. The
choreography is a new
work by Magnolia Hill
Artistic Director, Blythe
Smith and her staff. This year we have a wonderful staff made up of professional
dancers and performers who are currently working in their field. It is a wonderful
opportunity to collaborate with an extraordinarily talented group, says Blythe.
Joining the staff at Magnolia Hill this year is Kristaps Kikulis, a professional
Latvian ballet dancer currently dancing with the Atlantic City ballet and also ballet
master for the company. He will be performing a pas de deux in Midsummer with
Promise Smith, a native Vineland dancer who has trained with world-renowned bal-
let teachers to achieve a top-12 position in both contemporary and classical ballet
categories in the international ballet competition, Youth America Grand Prix. She
also received a YAGP gold medal for an ensemble ballet performed with the Rock
School for Dance Education in Tempestuous. Promise will dance the role of Titania.
Jonah Smith, a Drexel PhD student and teacher, will play the part of Oberon
and bring selected passages from Shakespeares play to the stage. Irish dancers
will shake things up during the wedding scene with their lively step dancing.
