3. Review Recall, what did we discuss yesterday?

Finding roots of a radical equation

What are the steps in finding roots of a radical equation?

Isolate the radical Square both sides Simplify Solve for x

From this class, let us form five groups. Directions: Each group will solve radical equation that you can get from the box. Assign one member from the group to explain your work. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. =3 =x = 25

= 4. Motivation Class lets have an activity Puzzle : (same groupings)

Directions: Each group will receive an illustration of a right triangle. Use these cut out papers to form a perfect square along each side of the triangle. The triangle has its side named a, b, c. How many square units are there in: Longest side c? Side b? Side a? What do you think is the relation of the two smaller squares to the bigger one? Again, what is the formula in finding area of a square? If the side of the large square is denoted as c, what do you think is the formula to be use? How about the formula that should be use in the two smaller squares a and b? Based on the relationship you found earlier, can you give a formula using areas of the square? Can you form a statement out of that formula?
100 sq. units 36 sq. units 64 sq. units

The sum of two smaller squares a and b is equal to the larger square c. A=s2 A = c2 A= b2 A= a2

c2 = a2 + b2

The sum of the squares of the two smaller legs a and b is equal to the squares of the longest leg c.

This statement is what we call Pythagorean Theorem named after Pythagoras who developed the theorem.

From c2 = a2 + b2 , if c is unknown how do we find the value

of c? What formula shall we use?

c2 = a2 + b2 c2 = a2 + b2 c = a2 + b2 c2 = a2 + b2 a2 = c2 b2 a2 = c2 b2 a = c2 b2 c2 = a2 + b2 b2 = c2 - a2 b2 = c2 - a2 b = c2 - a2

If side a is unknown, what could be the formula for a?

If the unknown is side b? how can we find b?

b. Developmental Activity 1. Lesson proper We will be using this formula in finding the length of unknown side of a triangle: Pythagorean formula is only good for a right triangle. What are the parts of a right triangle? Hypotenuse and legs

Example 1. Find the hypotenuse of a right triangle whose legs are 12 cm and 8 cm, respectively. Since hypotenuse or c is unknown we have to use the formula? Substitute the values, therefore:

2. Find the other leg of a right triangle if the hypotenuse is 30 cm and leg a = 18 cm. What is unknown? How can we find b? Substitute and then simplify.

3. Given the sides of the right triangle, find the unknown side. a= ______m b= 6m c= 15m the unknown here is a what be then the formula for a? Solve for a. 2. Fixing skills Play a game: tic tac toe Group1 (3 Xs in a row, horizontal, vertical or diagonal) Group 2(3 Os in a row, horizontal, vertical or diagonal) Each square on the board has a question. To place your corresponding letter on the square, you must answer the given question correctly. 3.Generalization What is the Pythagorean theorem?

The sum of the squares of the legs is equal to the square of the hypotenuse
c2 = a2 + b2

Therefore what is the Pythagorean formula? 4. Application I will group you into 2. Each group will solve the problem assigned to you. Please work as a group and maintain cleanliness on your work. Assign one member from the group to explain your work. Directions: Solve the following problems. Make an illustration. 1. A ladder leans against the wall of a building. Its top reaches 3 m above the ground and its foot is 1m from the wall. How long is the ladder? 2. A ramp was constructed to load a truck. If the ramp is 9 feet long and the horizontal distance from the bottom of the ramp to the truck is 7 feet, what is the vertical height of the ramp IV. Evaluation Directions : given the sides of the right triangle below find the unknown side. 1. a= 24m b = _____ c = 25m 2. a = ? b = 20dm

c = 24dm 3. a = 12cm b = 9 cm c=? 4. who is the proponent of the formula c2 = a2 + b2 V. Assignment: Do exercise 5.4 lets work it out and think about it Reference: Intermediate Algebra workbook pages 206-207.
