Why is Smart Drive So Different to Other Washers? Traditional auto-washers rely on a number of mechanical items to perform the functions required of a washing machine. For example, a gearbox for agitate, solenoids and clutches for spin, mechanical brakes to stop the bowl and timers and switches for the wash program. The Smart Drive technology allows much of these mechanical parts to be eliminated, creating a simpler and inherently more reliable drive system. The heart of this washer is the Smart Drive DC Motor designed by Fisher & Paykel Appliances. Where the motors of traditional auto-washers are usually capable of two speeds, the DC motors speed is dependent on the amount of current it takes from the mains. It just draws less current when it wants to go slowly, and more when it wants to go fast. In this way it is capable of running at any speed. All of this is controlled by a motor controller, which is housed in the console. The motor controller is constantly sensing the position of the motor (via the Hall sensor) and adjusting the power input to suit. This motor is directly coupled to the agitator via a shaft. In this way when the motor moves, the agitator moves. So when the motor controller senses the position of the motor it is in fact sensing the position of the agitator. Knowing what the agitator is doing or how it is responding is like having a camera in the wash bowl. Where a mechanical machine will just plug along no matter what uncontrolled, the Smart Drive is continually sensing what is going on in the wash bowl, feeding this information to the computer (motor controller) and responding. The results of years of wash performance testing and tons of wash loads have been programmed into the motor controller, telling it how to respond to what the agitator feels.

Construction Smart Drive has a durable low maintenance lid, a co-injected composite of virgin ABS skin with glass bead filled SAN core which was developed for its strength, ease of cleaning, non-scratching surface and weight. Smart Drive has a wide opening to provide easy access for loading and unloading clothes as well as to increase the perceivable capacity. The Motor Smart Drive has a brushless DC motor, with 56 ferrite, permanently magnetized poles. The stator has 42 electrically commutated poles and is controlled by 3 hall positioning sensors. The hall sensors provide the signal to electrically control the stator magnetic poles, via the current limiting switching electronics. The resulting magnetic field causes the rotor to rotate. The switching sequence of electrical current to the stator is controlled by the washing cycle microcomputer controller. The electrical power consumption of the motor is directly dependent on the load. Speed range 0 - 1000 rpm Braking time: less than 7 seconds (for phase 5 Smart Drive washers) Phase 6 Smart Drive doesnt need to brake, since it has a lid lock. Maximum torque, 27 Newtons Note: The SD200 stator is not interchangeable with previous models and can be identified by smaller terminal connections. The rotor has not changed and can be used for all models of Smart Drive.

Control Interface The control interface is very easy to use, following a left to right logic. Simply press Power, select the cycle you wish, then your wash options: Eco, Wash Temp, Water Level and Spin Speed then press Start/Pause to start the cycle.

First pick your wash cycle

Then your wash options

The wash progress lets the user know what part of the cycle the machine is in as each task is completed a light goes out. This gives some idea of how long the cycle has to go. There are a series of green lights that are lit when they are washing, each wash light means 3 minutes of agitation. Two Amber rinse lights the first one indicates the spray rinse and the second one indicates the deep fill. The red spin light, indicates when the machine is spinning. The wash cycle can be advanced using the double arrow button, every wash progress light equals 3 minute of agitation. Delay Start Selecting delay start will delay the start of the wash cycle by the chosen time, 1, 3 or 9 hours. Press Delay Start once for 1 hour, twice for 3 hours and three times for 9 hours and once again to return to normal. Once Delay Start is selected the delay period will begin, there is no need to press Start/Pause. The machine will not beep at the completion of the cycle if Delay Start has been selected.

Heavy Duty cycle is designed for heavily soiled durable garments and heavy duty fabrics like jeans, overalls and tea towels. Regular cycle is designed for medium to light soiled cottons, linens, work and play clothes. Delicate cycle uses a slow, gentle agitation designed to care for the most delicate items like lingerie and blouses. Wool cycle has been designed specifically for normally soiled knits and woollens carrying a MACHINE WASHABLE care claim. This cycle has been approved by the New Zealand Wool Board and Australian Wool Corporation for Woolmark products carrying a machine washable care claim. Permanent Press is a more traditional wash for synthetics, blends, and/or delicate fabrics with normal soil, and clothes which wrinkle easily.

Wash Performance Benefits of a Programmable Agitator Agitator has unlimited actions: this means the wash action can be designed to suit the garment types, and deliver consistent performance whatever the load size. Motor controller continuously monitors the wash load: just as you watch the clothes as you hand wash them, the Smart Drive effectively sees and responds to what goes on in the wash basket. It will make adjustments to large or unusual loads. An example of this is MAX CAPACITY PROFILE. This is where the machine senses when a huge load is being washed, it takes more power from the mains to push harder, but when even this does not turn the load over, it stops and restarts with a more vigorous wash profile. Very Low Agitate Speeds are possible: this means that very small loads can be washed at low water levels with gentle wash actions. This makes washing very small loads very efficient. In a traditional drive system the wash actions get rougher on low levels. Ability to spin at any speed: This facilitates a controlled spin profile ensuring safe high-speed spins, as well as a variety of slower spins. Ability to customise the wash performance to suit the different markets: wash habits and environmental conditions change dramatically from country to country. Fisher & Paykel washers can be, and are, programmed to suit. Auto-water Level: the ability to sense the viscosity of the wash water, which is used to sense the appropriate water level of each individual load.

Agitator

Water Options Auto Water Level This washer will determine the size of the load and automatically select the appropriate water level for the load. As the machine fills it will pause occasionally to sense the water level. If the lid is opened during this time the automatic sensing will be interrupted and can extend the fill time. Manual Water Level Selection The user selects the water level manually, choosing from three water levels- low, medium and high. The agitator has five levels marked on its stem that can be used to help select the correct water level for the load. The correct water level can be selected by using the mark nearest to the top of the dry clothes. The levels marked on the agitator do not correspond exactly to the level of water. They indicate the level of dry clothes suitable for the water level. Selecting a water level that is too high can cause out of balance loads, tangling, or splash-over.

Water Saver The regular and heavy duty cycles are defaulted to a spray and deep rinse. Pressing the Water Saver button changes the rinse from a spray and deep rinse to a shower rinse. A shower rinse alternatively showers the clothes with water and spins them to remove the sudsy water. Eco Option The Eco option can be used with the Regular and Heavy Duty cycles and it saves large amounts of water for the user. The Eco option uses an Eco Spray rinse which has been specially designed when the user wants to use less detergent and less water. However it has not been designed to be used with fabric softener, as it does not have a second deep rinse to dispense the softener correctly. It saves 25% more water than the Water Saver option.

Soak When soak is selected the machine will stop at the end of the wash and soak for 2 hours before completing the rinse and spin. During soak the washer will agitate for a few seconds every time. The soak option has been provided to help with stain removal. Spin Hold Spin hold can be selected before a cycle has begun, and the washing machine will pause at the end of the rinse, beep and flash the spin light to alert you that the rinse is finished and that it is waiting for another instruction. The spin hold option can be used to remove drip dry garments from a mixed load before the wash goes into spin, and the spin cycle can then be chosen. Of the entire load can be removed and hung outside to minimise the clothes creasing from the spin cycle & the spin speed. Temperature Options These models features 3 temperatures. Warm is the automatic wash temperature setting for all wash cycles. However both a hot water and cold water option are available for removing different types of stains. Hot water can also be used to assist in the killing of dust mites and microorganisms and thus is ideal to be used when there is an illness in the family.

Rinse Options There are 4 types of rinse that Smart Drive is able to perform Spray rinse followed by a Deep rinse (immersion rinse). Eco Spray rinse Water Saver rinse Double deep rinse

Spray and Deep rinse is the default rinse for cycles: Regular, Heavy Duty and Wool. Double Deep rinse is the default rinse for Delicate. Spray Rinse and Deep Rinse This is a very good rinse combination as it is designed to remove as much detergent as possible during the spray rinse, and use the deep rinse as a finishing process. The spray rinse uses a controlled spin-up routine only possible from a machine that can spin at any speed. The water in the spray rinse is always cold, as this is the best temperature for rinsing. The spray deep rinse combination is the rinse for those who want to use liquid fabric softener. The bowl spins to a very slow 90 rpm where it checks to see whether the bowl is correctly balanced. If it detects an unbalanced load, it will abort the spin and sound a user warning. (See out of balance). 2 If the load is balanced it will proceed to the next level around 300 rpm. At this speed a large mass of water is extracted from the load. It is like the first strong wring. After the bulk of the water has been removed from the clothes a small amount of water is sprayed onto the clothes to cool them down before they are subject to a high spin speed. This cooling reduces the likelihood of wrinkling. 3. The machine then slowly decelerates to around 350 rpm to begin the Spray Rinse. Water is sprayed onto the clothes, then centrifuged through them taking the detergent with it. The number of sprays the machine performs at this point is water level dependent. At a high water level the machine will perform four sprays, at a medium water level three spins will be performed and at low two sprays will be activated. 4. The load is then spun up to around 600 rpm. At this speed the clothes are flattened against the bowl and the soapy water is centrifuged out of them. 5. Smart Drive will then coast down to zero and begin to fill for the Deep Rinse. This is cold for all cycles except the Wool cycle where warm/cold is used. The deep rinse includes a two minute agitate, which removes the last of the detergent and gets rid of any extraneous matter (sand, grass, lint etc) left in the wrinkles of the clothes Eco Spray Rinse If the Eco option is chosen on the Regular and Heavy Duty cycles then during the spray rinse less water is used. Double Deep Rinse This is used with the Delicate cycle. The Spray Rinse is eliminated from the rinse and instead the Deep Rinse is performed twice. Water Saver Rinse

This very effective water effective method of rinsing can be compared to a shower as it uses a series of spins and sprays to progressively remove the detergent. Just as you get progressively more and more clean in a shower, this rinse removes more and more detergent. The load is spin up through the normal spin up profile (90rpm to check the bowl is balanced) then up to 300rpm. This serves as a first and quite gentle spin The machine then coasts to stir speed, about 30rpm. At this very low speed cold water is sprayed onto the clothes. The first spray is called the sense rinse because it determines the load size. Water is sprayed onto the load until a minimum water level is detected. This will depend on the size and water absorbency of the load. The second spin-up goes to 600rpm which then centrifuges this fresh water through the clothes load and out the holes in the sides of the bowl, taking detergent and dirt with it SmartDrive then coasts down to the stir speed and sprays half the volume of water it put in during the sense rinse. The third spin goes to 600rpm again, it serves to further dilute the detergent in the load SmartDrive then proceeds into its final spin (i.e. up to 1000rpm) The Water Saver rinse is always cold and is a very efficient way of removing detergent. It is important that this rinse is not used with liquid fabric softener, as it will only end up down the drain. Automatic Lint Removal System Smart Drives self cleaning lint removal system works by continuous water circulation, resulting in the separation of lint from the wash liquor. As the agitator moves the specially designed vanes on the bottom create turbulence. The agitator acts as a centrifugal pump, circulating the wash water. As a result of the agitator action, lint and wash liquor are sucked into the agitator stem and down to the base where they are directed into the cavity between the inner and outer bowls. The extruded holes of the inner bowl are shaped to allow the wash liquor to flow back into the bowl, but prevent the lint from following. The lint then floats to the surface of the water between the inner and outer bowl and remains there until it is flushed out
