Student Reflection

*Hymn

In Christ Alone by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty Introduced by T.J. Breshears, Class of 2012 Led by Brittany Laurie, Class of 2012

In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; This Cornerstone, this solid Ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my All in All, Here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone! Who took on flesh Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness Scorned by the ones He came to save: Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground His body lay Light of the world by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious Day Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory Sins curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me; From lifes first cry to final breath. Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of Christ Ill stand.

Scripture Introduction of Speaker Address *Hymn

1 Peter 1:1-25 Lindsay Aprahamian, Class of 2012 Kylie Castro, Class of 2012

Be Holy Deborah Dunn, Professor of Communication Studies Come Thou Fount by John Wyeth and Robert Robinson Westmont Orchestra directed by Michael Shasberger Introduced by Jamie Wells, Class of 2012 Led by Todd Scalisi, Class of 2012

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above; Praise the name! Im fixed upon it, name of Gods redeeming love. Hither to thy love has blest me, Thou hast brought me to this place; And I know Thy hand will bring me, safely home by Thy good grace. Jesus sought me when a stranger; wandering from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, bought me with His precious blood. O to grace how great a debtor, daily Im constrained to be! Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; Heres my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above.

*Benediction Recessional

Ben Patterson How Firm a Foundation Words attributed to John Keith Early American melody; harmony from Tabor Led by Casey Hoag, Class of 2012

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in His excellent word! What more can He say than to you He hath said To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled? Fear not, I am with thee, oh, be not dismayed, For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid; Ill strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand. When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, My grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply; The flame shall not harm thee; I only design Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine. The soul that on Jesus doth lean for repose, I will not, I will not, desert to his foes; That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, Ill never, no never, no never forsake.

Awards
The Westmont Medal
For many years Westmont has granted the Westmont Medal to individuals who are providing exceptional leadership in the Santa Barbara community. This has enabled us to demonstrate our gratefulness to the community for their friendship and support and also express our desire to be a positive influence and resource within Montecito and Santa Barbara. The Westmont Medal honors those whose lives embody the very principles associated with the Judeo-Christian character of the college. These men and women give substance and credence to our beliefs and serve as effective role models for our students. Their actions, as well as their words, bear persuasive witness to their commitment. We honor them for the example they set and the tremendous contribution they make to our community and to the world.

Deans Award
The Deans Award is given to the outstanding male and female graduates who have demonstrated excellence in the classroom, made superior contributions to an intercollegiate athletic team, and evidenced a deep faith in Christ.

Dave Dolan Award

The Dave Dolan Award is given to the outstanding graduate whose campus leadership has made significant contributions in our awareness and response to the social and spiritual needs of the community, the nation and the world.

Kenneth Monroe Award

The Kenneth Monroe Award is given to the outstanding male and female graduates who have demonstrated superior academic achievement in the classroom, excelled as leaders on campus, and impacted other students lives through their integrity, character, and faithfulness.

Faculty Scholarship Award

The Faculty Scholarship Award, which recognizes outstanding scholarship, is given to the graduating senior who has attained the highest cumulative grade point average during the entire Westmont program.

Bruce and Adaline Bare Outstanding Teacher Award

The Bruce and Adaline Bare Outstanding Teacher Award, an annual award funded by the late Trustee Emeritus Bruce Bare and his wife, Adaline, recognizes three outstanding professors: one from the humanities, one from the natural and behavioral sciences, and one from the social sciences. Faculty and seniors choose the recipients.

Faculty Research Award

The Faculty Research Award is given to a faculty member who, in the eyes of colleagues, models what it means to be a scholar at Westmont. Students prosper when faculty are also growing and developing in their fields throughout their careers. Research and scholarship by faculty benefit the professional guilds, students, society and the church.

2012 Westmont Medal Recipients

Chad and Ginni Dreier have dedicated their lives to serving the less fortunate by giving generously to numerous organizations that support children, education, literacy and health-related causes. Westmont honors them with the Westmont Medal to recognize their heartfelt service and philanthropy. Chad and Ginni have made a lasting contribution to our community, says President Gayle D. Beebe. They have been involved in virtually every major organization that works to improve the lives of our citizens. They are two of the most generous, kind and loving human beings I have ever met. They approach every situation with optimism and a forwardlooking perspective that solves problems and improves the lives of all they touch. Chad, a Los Angeles native, is the former president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of the Ryland Group, the seventh largest developer and builder of homes in the United States. He served as an officer in the United States Air Force from 1969 to 1972. After 13 years as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Loyola Marymount University, he is now the chair emeritus. He has also served on the Occidental Petroleum Board of Directors and as a member of the Policy Advisory Board of Harvard Universitys Joint Center for Housing Studies. Chad earned his bachelors degree in 1969 from Loyola University, where Ginni and Chad met at a dance while she was a Marymount College student. The two have been married for 43 years and make their home in Santa Barbara. Ginni and Chad enjoy living close to their daughter, Kristin (Rob), and son, Douglas (Hanna), and spending time with their grandchildren, Daniel (4 years old), Audrey (2 years old) and Michael (6 months). Numerous organizations have honored the Dreiers for their involvement in the Santa Barbara community, including the Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens, the Santa Barbara Police Activities League, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara and many others. A co-chair of the Womens Leadership Council of Loyola Marymount University, Ginni also serves or has served on the board of directors for the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens, the Restless Leg Syndrome Foundation, and the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation. She is involved with the Santa Barbara Police Activities League, Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara and Carpinteria, and Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

The Pageantry of Academic Dress

The history of academic dress dates to the early days of the oldest universities. The shape and size of the American hood marks the wearers degree (baccalaureate, masters, or doctoral) and the university or college that awarded the degree. Dress variations exist for academic robes from European universities. Most gowns are black. Bachelors have long, pointed sleeves with two pleats on either side. Masters gowns feature crescent-shaped, fulllength sleeves and a closed front with fluted shoulders. Doctors wear robes with full, flowing sleeves that have bars of black or blue velvet. Westmont graduates wear black mortarboard caps with black tassels. Tassel colors sometimes identify the wearers field of study. The velvet neck band on the hood symbolizes the wearers field of study, and the lining recognizes the official colors of the institution that granted the degree. The bachelors hood has a two-inch velvet band, the masters hood has a three-inch velvet band, and the doctors hood has a five-inch velvet band.

The Westmont Seal

The symbols on the Westmont College seal relate to the Christian faith and the ideals of a Christian liberal arts college. The open Bible shows the source of our authority in faith and practice. The burning lamp reflects knowledge lighting both the mind and the spirit. The three crosses symbolize our Trinitarian faith. The star and crown represent the incarnation and Lordship of Christ. The motto, CHRISTUS PRIMATUM TENENS, Christ holding preeminence, comes from Colossians 1:18: That in all things He might have the preeminence. The Westmont colors are maroon and white.

Celebrating Westmonts 75 Years

In 1937, Ruth Kerr helped establish a school that soon became Westmont, a liberal arts college committed to rigorous academics and a deep love of God. Wallace Emerson, the first president, envisioned an institution that rivaled the best colleges nationwide, and he set the standard for excellence that still applies. Westmont outgrew its Los Angeles campus in 1945 and moved to the former Dwight Murphy estate in Santa Barbara. Features of this property endure today, including the lovely Mediterranean house, formal gardens, wooded pathways and stone bridges. After achieving accreditation in 1958, the college added nine major facilities on campus in the 1960s. Enrollment rose to 840, and in 1976, Westmont received permission for 1,200 students. In 2007, the county approved an updated campus master plan. Gayle D. Beebe became Westmonts eighth president in 2007. He has focused on strategic planning, completion of the campus master plan, and building a strong financial base for the 21st century. He presided over the successful recovery from the 2008 Tea Fire, the national Bright Hope for Tomorrow capital campaign, and construction of Adams Center for the Visual Arts, Winter Hall for Science and Mathematics, the observatory and renovated athletic facilities. Throughout its history, Westmont has earned increasing national recognition for academic quality and its distinctive mission as an undergraduate, residential, Christian, liberal arts community serving Gods kingdom by cultivating thoughtful scholars, grateful servants and faithful leaders for global engagement with the academy, church and world. Westmont educates the whole person, transforming students for a lifetime of service in a variety of careers worldwide, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and heart to meet the great and pressing needs of our time. For more information about Westmonts 75th anniversary and history, see www.westmont.edu/anniversary or follow the link 75th Anniversary on the colleges home page.
