    A Muslim is encouraged to utter certain phrases at the mention of Allah, the Prophet, other Prophets, the angels, the companions of the Prophet, and righteous Muslims. Please say these phrases whenever you come across them in the book.

    Allah: Say Subhaanahuu wa ta’aalaa which means ‘Glorified and Exalted is He.’

    Prophet Muhammad: Say, Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa salam which means, ‘May the peace and blessing of Allah be on him.’ Say this phrase always when you hear the beloved name of the Prophet or at any place where the Prophet is mentioned.

    Other Prophets or an Angel: Say, Alayhis Salaam which means, ‘Peace be on him.’

    A male companion of the Prophet: Say, Radiyallaahu ‘anhum which means, ‘May Allah be pleased with him.’

    A past scholar or righteous Muslim: Say, Rahimahullaah which means, ‘May Allah have Mercy on him.’

    01: Al-Fātihah

    Introduction to the Surah:

    تحقيق العبودية الخالصة لله تعالى.

    This sūrah aims to divert one’s full focus on Allah making worship for Him alone

    Ayah: 1

    بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    باسم الله أبدأ قراءة القرآن، مستعينًا به تعالى متبركًا بذكر اسمه. وقد تضمنت البسملة ثلاثة من أسماء الله الحسنى، وهي: 1 - (الله)؛ أي: المعبود بحق، وهو أخص أسماء الله تعالى، ولا يسمى به غيره سبحانه. 2 - (الرَّحْمَن)؛ أي: ذو الرحمة الواسعة. فهو الرحمن بذاته. 3 - (الرَّحِيم)؛ أي: ذو الرحمة الواصلة. فهو يرحم برحمته من شاء من خلقه ومنهم المؤمنون من عباده.

    1. I begin by calling on Allah, Who is Ar-Raḥmān, the Merciful, and Ar-Raḥīm, the Compassionate. These last two names of Allah are derived from the Arabic word raḥmah, which means mercy: proving the greatness and vastness of His Mercy and that His Mercy surrounds everything, and embraces all living beings. Every blessing is due to His mercy, and the believers receive the greatest mercy.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    بِسْمِ اللهِ: أَيْ: أَبْتَدِئُ قِرَاءَتِي مُسْتَعِينًا بِاسْمِ اللهِ.

    الرَّحْمنِ: الَّذِي وَسِعَتْ رَحْمَتُهُ جَمِيعَ الْخَلْقِ. الرَّحِيمِ: الَّذِي يَرْحَمُ المُؤمِنِينَ.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (1) In the name of Allāh,[2] the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.[3]

    [2]- Allāh is a proper name belonging only to the one Almighty God, Creator and Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is within them, the Eternal and Absolute, to whom alone all worship is due. [3]- Ar-Raḥmān and ar-Raḥeem are two names of Allāh derived from the word raḥmah (mercy) . In Arabic grammar both are intensive forms of merciful (i.e., extremely merciful) . A complimentary and comprehensive meaning is intended by using both together. Raḥmān is used only to describe Allāh, while raḥeem might be used to describe a person as well. The Prophet (ﷺ) was described in the Qur’ān as raḥeem. Raḥmān is above the human level (i.e., intensely merciful) . Since one usually understands intensity to be something of short duration, Allāh describes Himself also as raḥeem (i.e., continually merciful) . Raḥmān also carries a wider meaning - merciful to all creation. Justice is a part of this mercy. Raḥeem includes the concept of speciality - especially and specifically merciful to the believers. Forgiveness is a part of this mercy. In addition, Raḥmān is adjectival, referring to an attribute of Allāh and is part of His essence. Raḥeem is verbal, indicating what He does: i.e., bestowing and implementing mercy.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  1. In the Name of Allâh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

    Ayah: 2

    ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    الثناء الكامل، وجميع أنواع المحامد من صفات الجلال والكمال هي لله وحده دون من سواه؛ إذ هو رب كل شيء وخالقه ومدبره. والعالمون جمع عالَم، وهم كل ما سوى الله تعالى.

    2. All praise belongs to Allah with regards to His essence, attributes and actions, because He is the Creator of everything. Everything belongs to Him and He is the disposer of their affairs; blessing individuals specifically and humans in general.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    رَبِّ: الرَّبُّ: المُرَبِّي لِخَلْقِهِ بِنِعَمِهِ.

    الْعَالَمِينَ: كُلِّ مَنْ سِوَى اللهِ تَعَالَى.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (2) [All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord[4] of the worlds -

    [4]- When referring to Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) , the Arabic term rabb (translated as Lord) includes all of the following meanings: owner, master, ruler, controller, sustainer, provider, guardian and caretaker.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  2. All the praises and thanks be to Allâh, the Lord[1] of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists).[2]

    [1] (V.1:2) Lord: The actual word used in the Qur’ân is Rabb There is no proper equivalent for Rabb in English language. It means the One and the Only Lord for all the universe, its Creator, Owner, Organizer, Provider, Master, Planner, Sustainer, Cherisher, and Giver of security. Rabb is also one of the Names of Allâh. We have used the word Lord as the nearest to Rabb . All occurrences of Lord in the interpretation of the meanings of the Noble Qur’ân actually mean Rabb and should be understood as such. [2] (V.1:2). Narrated Abu Sa‘îd bin Al-Mu‘alla: While I was praying in the mosque, Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم called me but I did not respond to him. Later I said, O Allâh’s Messenger, I was praying. He said, Didn’t Allâh say - Answer Allâh (by obeying Him) and His Messenger when he صلى الله عليه وسلم calls you. (V.8:24). He then said to me, I will teach you a Sûrah which is the greatest Sû rah in the Qur’ân, before you leave the mosque. Then he got hold of my hand, and when he intended to leave (the mosque), I said to him, Didn’t you say to me, I will teach you a Sûrah which is the greatest Sûrah in the Qur’an? He said, Al-Hamdu lillahi Rabbil-‘âlamîn [i.e. all the praises and thanks be to Allâh, the Lord of the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists)], Sûrat Al-Fâtihah which is As-Sab‘ Al-Mathâni (i.e. the seven repeatedly recited Verses) and the Grand Qur’ân which has been given to me." (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.6, Hadîth No. 1).

    Ayah: 3

    ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    ثناء على الله تعالى بعد حمده في الآية السابقة.

    3. Two names of Allah, Ar-Raḥmān and Ar-Raḥīm, derived from the word raḥmah, or mercy: indicating His mercy for creation, with the believers being the greatest recipients of it.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (3) The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful,

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  3. The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

    Ayah: 4

    مَٰلِكِ يَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    تمجيد لله تعالى بأنه المالك لكل ما في يوم القيامة، حيث لا تملك نفس لنفس شيئًا. ف«يوم الدين»: يوم الجزاء والحساب.

    4. He is the Master of the day of Judgement, the day in which we will be brought back to life and repaid for what we have done, all of His creation will be held accountable for their actions and recompensed for them. On that day God will ask To whom belongs the Kingdom today? [Sūrah Ghafir: 16] No one, no matter how high his status, will answer, and then God will reply Himself, to God, the One, the Overcomer [Sūrah Ghafir: 16]

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    يَوْمِ الدِّينِ: يَوْمِ الجَزَاءِ وَالحِسَابِ.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (4) Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.[5]

    [5]- i.e., repayment and compensation for whatever was earned of good or evil during life on this earth.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  4. The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)

    Ayah: 5

    إِيَّاكَ نَعۡبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسۡتَعِينُ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    نخصُّك وحدك بأنواع العبادة والطاعة، فلا نشرك معك غيرك، ومنك وحدك نطلب العون في كل شؤوننا، فبِيَدِكَ الخير كله، ولا مُعين سواك.

    5. We worship and obey none except You; we associate no one with You, and from You alone do we ask for help in all our affairs. All goodness is in Your hand, and there is no helper except You.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ: لَا نَعْبُدُ إِلَّا أَنْتَ.

    وإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ: لَا نَسْتَعِينُ فِي قَضَاءِ حَوَائِجِنَا إِلَّا بِكَ.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (5) It is You we worship and You we ask for help.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  5. You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything).

    Ayah: 6

    ٱهۡدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    دُلَّنا إلى الصراط المستقيم، واسلك بنا فيه، وثبِّتنا عليه، وزدنا هدى. و(الصراط المستقيم) هو الطريق الواضح الذي لا اعوجاج فيه، وهو الإسلام الذي أرسل الله به محمدًا صلى الله عليه وسلم .

    6. Show and facilitate for us the right way, the path of submission to You which has no crookedness, and make us firm upon it –

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    الصِّرَاطَ المُستَقِيمَ: الطَّرِيقَ الَّذِي لَا عِوَجَ فِيهِ؛ وَهُوَ الإِسْلَامُ.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (6) Guide us to the straight path -

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  6. Guide us to the Straight Way.[3]

    [3] (V.1:6) Guidance is of two kinds:

    Ayah: 7

    صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنۡعَمۡتَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ غَيۡرِ ٱلۡمَغۡضُوبِ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    طريق الذين أنعمت عليهم من عبادك بهدايتهم؛ كالنبيين والصدِّيقين والشهداء والصالحين وحَسُنَ أولئك رفيقًا، غير طريق المغضوب عليهم الذين عرفوا الحق ولم يتبعوه كاليهود، وغير طريق الضالين عن الحق الذين لم يهتدوا إليه لتفريطهم في طلب الحق والاهتداء إليه كالنصارى.

    7. The same path as those of Your creation whom You have blessed with guidance, such as the prophets, the truthful, martyrs, and the righteous ones. What good companions these people make! Keep us away from the path of those who earned Your anger, who knew the truth and did not follow it – as was the case with the Israelites; and keep us away from the path of those who lost their way and were not guided, because they were neglectful in seeking the Truth and being guided by it – as was the case with the Christians.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    غَيرِ المَغضُوبِ عَلَيهِمْ: الْيَهُودِ، وَمَنْ شَابَهَهُمْ فِي تَرْكِ الْعَمَلِ بِالْعِلْمِ.

    الضَّالِّينَ: النَّصَارَى، وَمَنْ شَابَهَهُمْ فِي الْعَمَلِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (7) The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have earned [Your] anger or of those who are astray.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  7. The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace[4] , not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger [5] (i.e. those who knew the Truth, but did not follow it) nor of those who went astray (i.e. those who did not follow the Truth out of ignorance and error). [6], [7]

    [4] (V.1:7) i.e. the way of the Prophets, the Siddîqûn (i.e. those followers of the Prophet, who were first and foremost to believe in him, like Abu Bakr As-Siddîq), the martyrs and the righteous, [as Allâh عز وجل said: And whoso obeys Allâh and the Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), then they will be in the company of those on whom Allâh has bestowed His Grace, of the Prophets, the Siddîqûn, the martyrs, and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are! (V.4:69)]. [5] (V.1:7) Narrated ‘Adi bin Hâtim رضي الله عنه: I asked Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم , about the Statement of Allâh: 1. غير المغضوب عليهم Ghairil-maghdûbi ‘alaihim (not the way of those who earned Your Anger), he صلى الله عليه وسلم replied They are the Jews. And 2. ولا الضالين Walad dâllîn (nor of those who went astray), he صلى الله عليه وسلم replied: The Christians, and they are the ones who went astray [This Hadith is quoted by At-Tirmidhi and Musnad Abu Dâwûd ]. [6] (V.1:7): Narrated ‘Ubâdah bin As-Sâmit رضي الله عنه Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said, Whoever does not recite Sûrat Al-Fâtihah in his prayer, his prayer is invalid. (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.1, Hadîth No. 723). [7] (V.1:7): Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه : Allâ h’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said, When the Imâm says: Ghairi l-maghdûbi ‘alaihim Walad-dâllîn [i.e. not the way of those who earned Your Anger, nor the way of those who went astray (1:7)], then you must say, Amîn , for if one’s utterance of Amîn coincides with that of the angels, then his past sins will be forgiven. (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.6, Hadîth No. 2).

    1. Allah starts His scripture with ‘In the name of Allah’, showing us that we should start our actions and speech in this way, asking for His help and His aid.

    • من هدي عباد الله الصالحين في الدعاء البدء بتمجيد الله والثناء عليه سبحانه، ثم الشروع في الطلب.

    2. Sūrah Al-Fātiḥah is the greatest sūrah in the Qur’ān, because it contains the rights that belong to Allah only, and explains the way to reach Him.

    • تحذير المسلمين من التقصير في طلب الحق كالنصارى الضالين، أو عدم العمل بالحق الذي عرفوه كاليهود المغضوب عليهم.

    3. All gratitude and praise belongs to Allah, because He is the Lord of everything: He brought everyone into life; He regulates our lives; and cares for us through His blessings.

    • دلَّت السورة على أن كمال الإيمان يكون بإخلاص العبادة لله تعالى وطلب العون منه وحده دون سواه.

    4. The sūrah shows that faith is perfected through sincerely worshipping Allah and seeking His help alone.

    02: Al-Baqarah

    Introduction to the Surah:

    الأمر بتحقيق الخلافة في الأرض بإقامة الإسلام، والاستسلام لله، والتحذير من حال بني إسرائيل.

    It encourages people to develop life on earth and establish Allah’s way; and explains the different types of people that exist, the principles of faith and the foundations of the sacred law.

    Ayah: 1

    الٓمٓ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    (الم) هذه من الحروف التي افتُتِحت بها بعض سور القرآن، وهي حروفٌ هجائية لا معنى لها في نفسها إذا جاءت مفردة هكذا (أ، ب، ت، إلخ)، ولها حكمة ومغزى؛ حيث لا يوجد في القرآن ما لا حكمة له، ومن أهم حِكَمها: الإشارة إلى التحدي بالقرآن الذي يتكوَّن من الحروف نفسها التي يعرفونها ويتكلمون بها؛ لذا يأتي غالبًا بعدها ذكرٌ للقرآن الكريم، كما في هذه السورة.

    1. Alif Lām Mīm – letters like these begin certain sūrahs of the Qur’ān. Although they have no meaning in themselves, they do however have a purpose. Since there is divine wisdom contained in everything in the Qur’ān, these letters point to the miracle of the Qur’ān, made up of the letters which make up the words we speak. Therefore, when sūrahs begin with letters in this way, they are usually followed with a verse about the Qur’ān, as we see in this sūrah.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    آلم: هَذَا القُرْآنُ مُؤَلَّفٌ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْحُرُوفِ، وَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ الإِتْيَانَ بِمِثْلِهِ.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (1) Alif, Lām, Meem.[7]

    [7]- These are among the fourteen opening letters which occur in various combinations at the beginning of twenty-nine sūrahs in the Qur’ān. Although there has been much speculation as to their meaning, it was not, in fact, revealed by Allāh to anyone and is known only to Him.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan 1. Alif-Lâm-Mîm. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur’ân and none but Allâh (Alone) knows their meanings.]

    Ayah: 2

    ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبُ لَا رَيۡبَۛ فِيهِۛ هُدٗى لِّلۡمُتَّقِينَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    ذلك القرآن العظيم لا شك فيه، لا من جهة تنزيله، ولا من حيث لفظه ومعناه، فهو كلام الله، يهدي المتقين إلى الطريق الموصل إليه.

    2. This is the Qur’ān, in which there is nothing of any doubt, neither in terms of its origin, nor in terms of its meaning. It is the word of Allah, guiding those who are mindful of Allah to the way that leads to Him.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ: مَنْ جَعَلُوا بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ عَذَابِ اللهِ وِقَايَةً بِفِعْلِ الأَوَامِرِ وَتَرْكِ النَّوَاهِي.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (2) This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allāh[8] -

    [8]- Literally, those who have taqwā, i.e., who have piety, righteousness, fear and love of Allāh, and who take great care to avoid His displeasure.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  2. This is the Book (the Qur’ân), whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqûn [the pious believers of Islamic Monotheism who fear Allâh much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allâh much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)].

    Ayah: 3

    ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡغَيۡبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقۡنَٰهُمۡ يُنفِقُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    3 - 4 - الذين يؤمنون بالغيب وهو كل ما لا يُدرك بالحواس وغاب عنّا، مما أخبر الله عنه أو أخبر عنه رسوله، كاليوم الآخر، وهم الذين يقيمون الصلاة بأدائها وفق ما شرع الله من شروطها، وأركانها، وواجباتها، وسننها، وهم الذين ينفقون مما رزقهم الله، بإخراج الواجب كالزكاة، أو غير الواجب كصدقة التطوع؛ رجاء ثواب الله، وهم الذين يؤمنون بالوحي الذي أنزل الله عليك - أيها النبي - والذي أنزل على سائر الأنبياء عليهم السلام من قبلك دون تفريق، وهم الذين يؤمنون إيمانًا جازمًا بالآخرة وما فيها من الثواب والعقاب.

    4. They believe in the revelation that Allah sent down to you, O Prophet, and in that which He revealed to all the other prophets before you (peace be upon them), without distinction; and they have a definite belief in the Afterlife, with its rewards and punishments.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (3) Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer,[9] and spend out of what We[10] have provided for them,

    [9]- At its proper times and according to its specified conditions. [10]- It is to be noted that the reference of Allāh (Subḥānahu wa taʿālā) to Himself as We in many Qur’ānic verses is necessarily understood in the Arabic language to denote grandeur and power, as opposed to the more intimate singular form I used in specific instances.

Who believe in the Ghaib [1] and perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât),[2] and spend out of what We have provided for them [i.e. give Zakât [3], spend on themselves, their parents, their children, their wives, etc., and also give charity to the poor and also in Allâh’s Cause - Jihâd].

    [1] (V.2:3): Al-Ghaib: literally means a thing not seen. But this word includes vast meanings: Belief in Allâh, Angels, Holy Books, Allâh’s Messengers, Day of Resurrection and Al-Qadar (Divine Pre-ordainments). It also includes what Allâh and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم informed about the knowledge of the matters of past, present, and future e.g., news about the creation of the heavens and earth, botanical and zoological life, the news about the nations of the past, and about Paradise and Hell. [2] (V.2:3): Iqâmat-as-Salât إقامة الصلاة: The performance of Salât (prayers). It means that: [3] (V.2:3) Zakât زكاة : A certain fixed proportion of the wealth and of each and every kind of property liable to Zakât of a Muslim to be paid yearly for the benefit of the poor in the Muslim community. The payment of Zakât is obligatory as it is one of the five pillars of Islâm. Zakât is the major economic means for establishing social justice and leading the Muslim society to prosperity and security. [See Sahih Al- Bukhâri, Vol. 2, Book of Zakât, No. 24]

    Ayah: 4

    وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيۡكَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ مِن قَبۡلِكَ وَبِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ هُمۡ يُوقِنُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    3 - 4 - الذين يؤمنون بالغيب وهو كل ما لا يُدرك بالحواس وغاب عنّا، مما أخبر الله عنه أو أخبر عنه رسوله، كاليوم الآخر، وهم الذين يقيمون الصلاة بأدائها وفق ما شرع الله من شروطها، وأركانها، وواجباتها، وسننها، وهم الذين ينفقون مما رزقهم الله، بإخراج الواجب كالزكاة، أو غير الواجب كصدقة التطوع؛ رجاء ثواب الله، وهم الذين يؤمنون بالوحي الذي أنزل الله عليك - أيها النبي - والذي أنزل على سائر الأنبياء عليهم السلام من قبلك دون تفريق، وهم الذين يؤمنون إيمانًا جازمًا بالآخرة وما فيها من الثواب والعقاب.

    4. They believe in the revelation that Allah sent down to you, O Prophet, and in that which He revealed to all the other prophets before you (peace be upon them), without distinction; and they have a definite belief in the Afterlife, with its rewards and punishments.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (4) And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  4. And who believe in (the Qur’ân and the Sunnah )[4] which has been sent down (revealed) to you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) and in that which was sent down before you [the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), etc.] and they believe with certainty in the Hereafter. (Resurrection, recompense of their good and bad deeds, Paradise and Hell).

    [4] (V.2:4) Narrated Ibn ‘Umar رضي الله عنهما: Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Islâm is based on (the following) five (principles): 1. To testify that Lâ ilâha illallâh wa anna Muhammad-ur-Rasûl Allâh (none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh and that Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is the Messenger of Allâh). 2. Iqâmat-as-Salât: to perform the five (compulsory congregational) Salât (prayers). 3. To pay Zakât 4. To perform Hajj (i.e. pilgrimage to Makkah). 5. To observe Saum (fasting) during the month of Ramadan. (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol. 1, Hadith No. 7).

    Ayah: 5

    أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدٗى مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡۖ وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    هؤلاء المُتَّصِفون بهذه الصفات على تَمكُّنٍ من طريق الهداية، وهم الفائزون في الدنيا والآخرة بنَيلهم ما يرجون ونجاتهم مما يخافون.

    5. The people who possess these qualities are on the path of guidance, and will be successful in this world and the next, gaining what they desire and being saved from what they fear.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (5) Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  5. They are on (true) guidance from their Lord, and they are the successful.

    • الثقة المطلقة في نفي الرَّيب دليل على أنه من عند الله؛ إذ لا يمكن لمخلوق أن يدعي ذلك في كلامه.

    1. The Qur’ān contains conclusive proof that it came from Allah, the Wise, the Knowing.

    • لا ينتفع بما في القرآن الكريم من الهدايات العظيمة إلا المتقون لله تعالى المعظِّمون له.

    2. It is those who are mindful of Allah and glorify Him who benefit from the great guidance within the Qur’ān.

    • من أعظم مراتب الإيمانِ الإيمانُ بالغيب؛ لأنه يتضمن التسليم لله تعالى في كل ما تفرد بعلمه من الغيب، ولرسوله بما أخبر عنه سبحانه.

    3. Believing in [Al-Ghaib] is one of the greatest degrees of faith, because it means accepting what Allah alone knows about [the Ghaib] and what He has told the Prophet (peace be upon him) about it. Al-Ghaib: literally means the unrealisable i.e. things that are beyond our senses of touch, sight, hearing etc. This includes belief in Allah, Angels, Revealed Scripture, Allah’s messengers, Day of Recompense, and Al-Qadar (divine pre-ordainments). It also includes what Allah and His Messenger informed about the past, present and future e.g. the creation of the heavens and earth, botanical and zoological life, stories about the nations of the past and about Paradise and Hell etc.

    • كثيرًا ما يقرن الله تعالى بين الصلاة والزكاة؛ لأنَّ الصلاة إخلاص للمعبود، والزكاة إحسان للعبيد، وهما عنوان السعادة والنجاة.

    4. Allah often mentions prayer and giving Zakat together. Prayer shows sincerity to Allah, and giving Zakat shows kindness to creation. Together they are the route to happiness and success.

    • الإيمان بالله تعالى وعمل الصالحات يورثان الهداية والتوفيق في الدنيا، والفوز والفلاح في الأُخرى.

    5. Having faith in God and doing good works leads to guidance and success in this world and the next.

    Ayah: 6

    إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ءَأَنذَرۡتَهُمۡ أَمۡ لَمۡ تُنذِرۡهُمۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    إن الذين حقت عليهم كلمة الله بعدم الإيمان مستمرون على ضلالهم وعنادهم، فإنذارك لهم وعدمه سواء.

    6. Those who reject what Allah revealed to His Messenger continue on the wrong path in their stubbornness. So, it makes no difference whether you warn them or not.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (6) Indeed, those who disbelieve[11] - it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe.

    [11]- Literally, cover or conceal (faith or truth).

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan 6. Verily, those who disbelieve, it is the same to them whether you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) warn them or do not warn them, they will not believe.

    Ayah: 7

    خَتَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ وَعَلَىٰ سَمۡعِهِمۡۖ وَعَلَىٰٓ أَبۡصَٰرِهِمۡ غِشَٰوَةٞۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٞ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    لأن الله طبع على قلوبهم فأغلقها على ما فيها من باطل، وطبع على سمعهم فلا يسمعون الحق سماع قَبول وانقياد، وجعل على أبصارهم غطاء فلا يبصرون الحق مع وضوحه، ولهم في الآخرة عذاب عظيم.

    7. Allah has sealed their hearts, locking inside them their falsehood, and has placed a seal on their hearing, so that they do not listen to nor accept the truth. He has put a cover over their eyes, so that they do not see the truth in its clarity. They will suffer greatly. After describing the disbelievers, who are at fault inside and out, He describes the hypocrites, who appear good on the outside, but are not so inwardly:

    خَتَمَ اللهُ: طَبَعَ اللهُ.

    غِشَاوَةٌ: غِطَاءٌ.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (7) Allāh has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil.[12] And for them is a great punishment.

    [12]- A covering preventing them from discerning guidance. This condition is a direct result of their arrogance and persistence in sin.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  7. Allâh has set a seal on their hearts and on their hearing, (i.e. they are closed from accepting Allâh’s Guidance), and on their eyes there is a covering. Theirs will be a great torment.

    Ayah: 8

    وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَبِٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأٓخِرِ وَمَا هُم بِمُؤۡمِنِينَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    ومن الناس طائفة يزعمون أنهم مؤمنون، يقولون ذلك بألسنتهم خوفًا على دمائهم وأموالهم، وهم في الباطن كافرون.

    8. Among people are some who claim to have faith in Allah, when they actually do not believe.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (8) And of the people are some who say, We believe in Allāh and the Last Day, but they are not believers.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  8. And of mankind, there are some (hypocrites) who say: We believe in Allâh and the Last Day while in fact they believe not.

    Ayah: 9

    يُخَٰدِعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَمَا يَخۡدَعُونَ إِلَّآ أَنفُسَهُمۡ وَمَا يَشۡعُرُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    يعتقدون بجهلهم أنهم يخدعون الله والمؤمنين بإظهار الإيمان وإبطان الكفر، ولكنهم لا يشعرون بذلك؛ لأن الله تعالى يعلم السر وأخفى، وقد أَطْلَع المؤمنين على صفاتهم وأحوالهم.

    9. They think that they can deceive Allah and the believers by acting outside as if they believe, while inside hiding their disbelief; but really, they only deceive themselves, without realising it. Allah knows all that is secret and hidden, and has told the believers what these people are like.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (9) They [think to] deceive Allāh and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  9. They (think to) deceive Allâh and those who believe, while they only deceive themselves, and perceive (it) not!

    Ayah: 10

    فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٞ فَزَادَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مَرَضٗاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمُۢ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكۡذِبُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    والسبب أن في قلوبهم شكًّا، فزادهم الله شكًّا إلى شكِّهم، والجزاء من جنس العمل، ولهم عذاب أليم في الدرك الأسفل من النار، بسبب كذبهم على الله وعلى الناس، وتكذيبهم بما جاء به محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم.

    10. Allah increases the disease in their hearts, and they reap what they sow. Because they lied Allah increases the disease of doubts in their hearts, by adding hesitation to their uncertainty, hence they only gain what they deserve. They will have a painful suffering in the worst parts of Hell because they lied against Allah, and the people, and rejected the message brought by Muhammad (peace be upon him).

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    مَّرَضٌ: شَكٌّ، وَنِفَاقٌ.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (10) In their hearts is disease, so Allāh has increased their disease;[13] and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.

    [13]- The disease mentioned here includes doubt, hypocrisy, arrogance and disbelief.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  10. In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allâh has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies.

    Ayah: 11

    وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ لَا تُفۡسِدُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّمَا نَحۡنُ مُصۡلِحُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    وإذا نُهوا عن الإفساد في الأرض بالكفر والذنوب وغيرها، أنكروا وزعموا أنهم هم أصحاب الصلاح والإصلاح.

    11. When they are told not to ruin things on earth – through their rejection of the truth, their disobedience and so on – they deny doing so, claiming that they only correct things and put them right.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (11) And when it is said to them, Do not cause corruption on the earth, they say, We are but reformers.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  11. And when it is said to them: Make not mischief on the earth, they say: We are only peace-makers.

    Ayah: 12

    أَلَآ إِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدُونَ وَلَٰكِن لَّا يَشۡعُرُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    والحقيقة أنهم هم أصحاب الإفساد، ولكنهم لا يشعرون بذلك، ولا يشعرون أن فعلهم عين الفساد.

    12. The truth is that it is they who ruin things, but they do not admit this, nor do they know that their actions are the cause of all ruin.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (12) Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  12. Verily! They are the ones who make mischief, but they perceive not.

    Ayah: 13

    وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ ءَامِنُواْ كَمَآ ءَامَنَ ٱلنَّاسُ قَالُوٓاْ أَنُؤۡمِنُ كَمَآ ءَامَنَ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُۗ أَلَآ إِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ وَلَٰكِن لَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    وإذا أُمروا بالإيمان كما آمن أصحاب محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم؛ أجابوا على سبيل الاستنكار والاستهزاء بقولهم: أنؤمن كإيمان خِفافِ العقول؟! والحق أنهم هم السفهاء، ولكنهم يجهلون ذلك.

    13. When they are told to have faith as the companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him) did, they reply, looking down on people and making fun of them, saying should we have faith like simple-minded people do? In fact, it is they who are the fools, but they are unaware of this.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (13) And when it is said to them, Believe as the people have believed, they say, Should we believe as the foolish have believed? Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  13. And when it is said to them (hypocrites): Believe as the people (followers of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, Al-Ansâr and Al-Muhajirûn) have believed, they say: Shall we believe as the fools have believed? Verily, they are the fools, but they know not.

    Ayah: 14

    وَإِذَا لَقُواْ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ قَالُوٓاْ ءَامَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوۡاْ إِلَىٰ شَيَٰطِينِهِمۡ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا مَعَكُمۡ إِنَّمَا نَحۡنُ مُسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    وإذا التقوا المؤمنين قالوا: صدَّقنا بما تؤمنون به؛ يقولون ذلك خوفًا من المؤمنين، وإذا انصرفوا عن المؤمنين إلى رؤسائهم منفردين بهم، قالوا مؤكدين ثباتهم على متابعتهم لهم: إنا معكم على طريقتكم، ولكنا نوافق المؤمنين ظاهرًا سخرية بهم واستهزاءً.

    14. When the hypocrites meet the believers, they say, ‘We believe what you believe’, as they think it will benefit them if they act like this; but when they are alone with their leaders, they say, ‘We are really with you and follow you. We are only making fun of them when we say that we believe’.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (14) And when they meet those who believe, they say, We believe; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  14. And when they meet those who believe, they say: We believe, but when they are alone with their Shayâtîn (devils - polytheists, hypocrites), they say: Truly, we are with you; verily, we were but mocking.

    Ayah: 15

    ٱللَّهُ يَسۡتَهۡزِئُ بِهِمۡ وَيَمُدُّهُمۡ فِي طُغۡيَٰنِهِمۡ يَعۡمَهُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    الله يستهزئ بهم في مقابلة استهزائهم بالمؤمنين، جزاءً لهم من جنس عملهم، ولهذا أجرى لهم أحكام المسلمين في الدنيا، وأما في الآخرة فيجازيهم على كفرهم ونفاقهم، وكذلك يمهلهم ليتمادوا في ضلالهم وطغيانهم، فيبقوا حائرين مترددين.

    15. Allah mocks the hypocrites for their mocking of the believers, and He will repay in equal measure for their behavior. They are treated as believers in this world, but will be repaid for their lying and deception in the next life. He allows them to become more and more lost and to do more and more wrong, so they remain confused and doubtful about the truth.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    وَيَمُدُّهُمْ: يَزِيدُهُمْ، وَيُمْهِلُهُمْ.

    يَعْمَهُونَ: يَتَحَيَّرُونَ، وَيَعْمَوْنَ عَنِ الرُّشْدِ.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (15) [But] Allāh mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression [while] they wander blindly.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  15. Allâh mocks at them and gives them increase in their wrong-doing to wander blindly.

    Ayah: 16

    أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱشۡتَرَوُاْ ٱلضَّلَٰلَةَ بِٱلۡهُدَىٰ فَمَا رَبِحَت تِّجَٰرَتُهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُواْ مُهۡتَدِينَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    أولئك المنافقون الموصوفون بتلك الصفات هم الذين استبدلوا الكفر بالإيمان، فما ربحت تجارتهم؛ لخسارتهم الإيمان بالله، وما كانوا مهتدين إلى الحق.

    16. It is they who are the fools, because they exchanged faith for disbelief; and this exchange did not help them in any way, because they lost their faith in Allah and lost the way to the truth.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (16) Those are the ones who have purchased error [in exchange] for guidance, so their transaction has brought no profit, nor were they guided.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  16. These are they who have purchased error for guidance, so their commerce was profitless. And they were not guided.

    Benefits of the verses in this page:

    • أن من طبع الله على قلوبهم بسبب عنادهم وتكذيبهم لا تنفع معهم الآيات وإن عظمت.

    1. Those whose hearts Allah has sealed because of their stubbornness and disbelief will not benefit from the signs of Allah, no matter how great they may be.

    • أن إمهال الله تعالى للظالمين المكذبين لم يكن عن غفلة أو عجز عنهم، بل ليزدادوا إثمًا، فتكون عقوبتهم أعظم.

    2. Allah allows those who reject faith and do wrong to do as they please, not because He does not know what they are doing or is unable to stop them, but to allow them to accumulate sins for which they will be held responsible in the next life.

    Ayah: 17

    مَثَلُهُمۡ كَمَثَلِ ٱلَّذِي ٱسۡتَوۡقَدَ نَارٗا فَلَمَّآ أَضَآءَتۡ مَا حَوۡلَهُۥ ذَهَبَ ٱللَّهُ بِنُورِهِمۡ وَتَرَكَهُمۡ فِي ظُلُمَٰتٖ لَّا يُبۡصِرُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    ضرب الله لهؤلاء المنافقين مثلين: مثلًا ناريًّا، ومثلًا مائيًّا، فأما مثلهم الناري: فهم كمثل من أوقد نارًا ليستضيء بها، فلما سطع نورها وظن أنه ينتفع بضوئها خمدت، فذهب ما فيها من إشراق، وبقي ما فيها من إحراق، فبقي أصحابها في ظلمات لا يرون شيئًا، ولا يهتدون سبيلًا.

    17. They are like someone who lights a fire, but when it has lit up what is around him, Allah takes away the light from the flames: leaving them in the darkness, unable to see. Allah shows us what the hypocrites are like with two examples: one related to fire, and the other to water. In the example related to fire, He compares them to someone who lights a fire to illuminate things, but when it is lit and he thinks he will benefit from its light, it goes out, smoldering and leaving him in the dark. Such people then remain in the dark, unable to see anything or find a way.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (17) Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allāh took away their light and left them in darkness [so] they could not see.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan 17. Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindled a fire; then, when it lighted all around him, Allâh took away their light and left them in darkness. (So) they could not see.

    Ayah: 18

    صُمُّۢ بُكۡمٌ عُمۡيٞ فَهُمۡ لَا يَرۡجِعُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    فهم صمٌّ لا يسمعون الحق سماع قبول، بُكْمٌ لا ينطقون به، عمي عن إبصاره، فلا يرجعون عن ضلالهم.

    18.They are deaf: unable to hear and accept the truth, or speak about it. They are blind to seeing the truth, so they do not turn back from their error.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    بُكْمٌ: لَا يَنْطِقُونَ بِالْحَقِّ.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (18) Deaf, dumb and blind - so they will not return [to the right path].

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  18. They are deaf, dumb, and blind, so they return not (to the Right Path).

    Ayah: 19

    أَوۡ كَصَيِّبٖ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فِيهِ ظُلُمَٰتٞ وَرَعۡدٞ وَبَرۡقٞ يَجۡعَلُونَ أَصَٰبِعَهُمۡ فِيٓ ءَاذَانِهِم مِّنَ ٱلصَّوَٰعِقِ حَذَرَ ٱلۡمَوۡتِۚ وَٱللَّهُ مُحِيطُۢ بِٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    وأما مثلهم المائي: فهم كمثل مطر كثير، من سحاب فيه ظلمات متراكمة ورعد وبرق، نزل على قوم فأصابهم ذعر شديد، فجعلوا يسدُّون آذانهم بأطراف أصابعهم، من شدة صوت الصواعق خوفًا من الموت، والله محيط بالكافرين لا يعجزونه.

    19. In the example related to water, a storm full of darkness, thunder and lightning is described. Some people are terrified by it and put their fingers in their ears because of the strength of the thunderclaps, scared of death. Allah surrounds the disbelievers, and has absolute power over them, so they cannot escape Him.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    كَصَيِّبٍ: كَمَطَرٍ شَدِيدٍ.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (19) Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But Allāh is encompassing[14] of the disbelievers.

    [14]- Allāh states in the Qur’ān that He has certain attributes such as hearing, sight, hands, face, mercy, anger, coming, encompassing, being above the Throne, etc. Yet, He has disassociated Himself from the limitations of human attributes or human imagination. Correct Islāmic belief requires faith in the existence of these attributes as Allāh has described them without applying to them any allegorical meanings or attempting to explain how a certain quality could be (while this is known only to Allāh) and without comparing them to creation or denying that He (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) would have such a quality. His attributes are befitting to Him alone, and There is nothing like unto Him. (42:11)

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  19. Or like a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is darkness, thunder, and lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunder-clap for fear of death. But Allâh ever encompasses the disbelievers (i.e. Allâh will gather them all together).

    Ayah: 20

    يَكَادُ ٱلۡبَرۡقُ يَخۡطَفُ أَبۡصَٰرَهُمۡۖ كُلَّمَآ أَضَآءَ لَهُم مَّشَوۡاْ فِيهِ وَإِذَآ أَظۡلَمَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ قَامُواْۚ وَلَوۡ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ لَذَهَبَ بِسَمۡعِهِمۡ وَأَبۡصَٰرِهِمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ قَدِيرٞ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    يكاد البرق من شدة لمعانه وسطوعه يأخذ أبصارهم، كلما ومض البرق لهم وأضاء تقدموا، وإذا لم يضئ بقوا في الظلام، فلم يستطيعوا التحرك، ولو شاء الله لذهب بسمعهم وأبصارهم بقدرته الشاملة لكل شيء؛ فلا تعود إليهم؛ لإعراضهم عن الحق. فكان المطر مثلًا للقرآن، وصوت الصواعق مثلًا لما فيه من الزواجر، وضوء البرق مثلًا لظهور الحق لهم أحيانًا، وجعل سد الآذان من شدة الصواعق، مثلًا لإعراضهم عن الحق وعدم الاستجابة له، ووجه الشبه بين المنافقين وأصحاب المَثَلَين؛ هو عدم الاستفادة، ففي المثل الناري: لم يستفد مستوقدها غير الظلام والإحراق، وفي المثل المائي: لم يستفد أصحاب المطر إلا ما يروِّعهم ويزعجهم من الرعد والبرق، وهكذا المنافقون لا يرون في الإسلام إلا الشدة والقسوة.

    20. The brightness of the lightning almost blinds them. Whenever it flashes, lighting things up, they go forward and when there is no light they remain in darkness, unable to move. If God willed, He could take away their hearing and their sight, in His absolute power over all things; and not return it to them because they turn away from the truth. The rain in the storm could be likened to the Qur’ān, the thunderclap to its warnings, and the lightning to truths, appearing to them from time to time. The covering of their ears to the thunderclaps likened to their turning away from the truth, and not responding to it. The hypocrites are similar to the people in these examples because they receive no benefit from anything. In the example of the fire, all they receive is darkness and a smoldering fire. In the example of the storm-cloud, all they receive is fear and alarm because of the thunder and lightning. Similarly, the hypocrites see nothing in Islam except difficulty and harshness.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (20) The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if Allāh had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  20. The lightning almost snatches away their sight, whenever it flashes for them, they walk therein, and when darkness covers them, they stand still. And if Allâh willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Certainly, Allâh has power over all things.

    Ayah: 21

    يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱعۡبُدُواْ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَكُمۡ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَتَّقُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    يا أيها الناس اعبدوا ربكم وحده دون سواه؛ لأنه الذي خلقكم وخلق الأمم السابقة لكم، رجاء أن تجعلوا بينكم وبين عذابه وقاية؛ بامتثال أوامره واجتناب نواهيه.

    21. O people, worship no one other than your Lord, because He created you and the people before you, so that you may save yourselves from suffering, by following His instructions and keeping away from what He has prohibited.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (21) O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous -

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  21. O mankind! Worship your Lord (Allâh), Who created you and those who were before you so that you may become Al-Muttaqûn (the pious - See V.2:2).

    Ayah: 22

    ٱلَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ فِرَٰشٗا وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بِنَآءٗ وَأَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءٗ فَأَخۡرَجَ بِهِۦ مِنَ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ رِزۡقٗا لَّكُمۡۖ فَلَا تَجۡعَلُواْ لِلَّهِ أَندَادٗا وَأَنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    فهو الذي جعل لكم الأرض بساطًا ممهدًا، وجعل السماء من فوقها مُحكمة البنيان، وهو المنعم بإنزال المطر، فأنبت به مختلف الثمار من الأرض، لتكون رزقًا لكم، فلا تجعلوا لله شركاء وأمثالًا وأنتم تعلمون أنه لا خالق إلا الله عز وجل.

    22. It is He Who made the earth like a carpet spread out in front of you and it is He Who masterfully constructed the sky over you. Through His grace rain falls, producing different crops from the earth, as produce for you. Do not, then, consider others to be equal to Allah, when you know that He alone is worthy of being worshipped.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    أَندَادًا: نُظَرَاءَ، وَأَمْثَالًا.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (22) [He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allāh equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him].

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  22. Who has made the earth a resting place for you, and the sky as a canopy, and sent down water (rain) from the sky and brought forth therewith fruits as a provision for you. Then do not set up rivals unto Allâh (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped).[1]

    [1] (V.2:22) Narrated ‘Abdullâh رضي الله عنه: I asked the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم , What is the greatest sin in consideration with Allâh? He said, That you set up a rival unto Allâh though He Alone created you. I said, That is indeed a great sin. Then I asked, What is next? He said To kill your son lest he should share your food with you. I asked, What is next? He said, To commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbour. (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.6, Hadîth No. 4).

    Ayah: 23

    وَإِن كُنتُمۡ فِي رَيۡبٖ مِّمَّا نَزَّلۡنَا عَلَىٰ عَبۡدِنَا فَأۡتُواْ بِسُورَةٖ مِّن مِّثۡلِهِۦ وَٱدۡعُواْ شُهَدَآءَكُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    وإن كنتم - يا أيها الناس - في شك من القرآن المُنزل على عبدنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، فنتحداكم أن تعارضوه بالإتيان بسورة واحدة مماثلة له، ولو كانت أقصر سورة منه، ونادوا من استطعتم من أنصاركم إن كنتم صادقين فيما تدَّعونه.

    23. Allah challenges those who have any doubt about the Qur’ān revealed to His servant, Muhammad (peace be upon him), to produce a chapter just like it, and to call their helpers, if they are truthful about what they say.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    رَيْبٍ: شَكٍّ.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (23) And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down [i.e., the Qur’ān] upon Our Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)], then produce a sūrah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses [i.e., supporters] other than Allāh, if you should be truthful.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  23. And if you (Arab pagans, Jews, and Christians) are in doubt concerning that which We have sent down (i.e. the Qur’ân) to Our slave (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), then produce a Sûrah (chapter) of the like thereof and call your witnesses (supporters and helpers) besides Allâh, if you are truthful.

    Ayah: 24

    فَإِن لَّمۡ تَفۡعَلُواْ وَلَن تَفۡعَلُواْ فَٱتَّقُواْ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِي وَقُودُهَا ٱلنَّاسُ وَٱلۡحِجَارَةُۖ أُعِدَّتۡ لِلۡكَٰفِرِينَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    فإن لم تفعلوا ذلك - ولن تقدروا عليه أبدًا - فاتقوا النار التي توقد بالناس المستحقين للعذاب، وبأنواع الحجارة مما كانوا يعبدونه وغيرها، هذه النار قد أعدها الله وهيأها للكافرين.

    24. If they are unable to do so – and they will never be able to do it – they should be mindful of the fire of Hell, which burns with people who deserve the torment, and with the idols which they used to worship instead of Allah: punishing both the idol-worshipers and what they worshiped. The fire of Hell has been prepared as a punishment for the disbelievers.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (24) But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  24. But if you do it not, and you can never do it, then fear the Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.

    • أن الله تعالى يخذل المنافقين في أشد أحوالهم حاجة وأكثرها شدة؛ جزاء نفاقهم وإعراضهم عن الهدى.

    1. Allah leaves the hypocrites in their greatest need, as repayment for their hypocrisy and for turning away from guidance.

    • من أعظم الأدلة على وجوب إفراد الله بالعبادة أنه تعالى هو الذي خلق لنا ما في الكون وجعله مسخَّرًا لنا.

    2. We should worship Allah alone Who created for us everything that is in the universe, and put them at our service.

    • عجز الخلق عن الإتيان بمثل سورة من القرآن الكريم يدل على أنه تنزيل من حكيم عليم.

    3. The inability of people to produce anything similar to a sūrah of the Qur’ān shows that it came down from Allah, the Wise and Knowing.

    Ayah: 25

    وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ أَنَّ لَهُمۡ جَنَّٰتٖ تَجۡرِي مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُۖ كُلَّمَا رُزِقُواْ مِنۡهَا مِن ثَمَرَةٖ رِّزۡقٗا قَالُواْ هَٰذَا ٱلَّذِي رُزِقۡنَا مِن قَبۡلُۖ وَأُتُواْ بِهِۦ مُتَشَٰبِهٗاۖ وَلَهُمۡ فِيهَآ أَزۡوَٰجٞ مُّطَهَّرَةٞۖ وَهُمۡ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    وإذا كان الوعيد السابق للكافرين؛ فبشِّر - أيها النبي - المؤمنين بالله الذين يعملون الصالحات؛ بما يسرُّهم من جنات تجري الأنهار من تحت قصورها وأشجارها، كلما أُطعموا من ثمارها الطيبة رزقًا؛ قالوا من شدة الشّبَهِ بثمار الدنيا: هذا مثل الثمار التي رزقنا من قبل، وقُدمت لهم ثمار متشابهة في شكلها واسمها حتى يُقْبِلُوا عليها بحكم المعرفة بها، ولكنها مختلفة في طعمها ومذاقها، ولهم في الجنة أزواج مبرَّأة من كل ما تنفر منه النفس، ويُسْتَقْذَر طبعًا مما يُتَصَوَّر في أهل الدنيا، وهم في نعيم دائم لا ينقطع، بخلاف نعيم الدنيا المنقطع.

    25. The warnings in the previous verses were for the disbelievers, so now the Messenger is told to address the believers: Give good news to those who have faith in Allah and do good, and tell them about that which will please them: gardens in Paradise, with rivers flowing beneath their palaces and trees. Whenever they are given fruits from the gardens to consume, they will comment on how similar they are to the fruits of the earth, saying, ‘This is similar to what we had before’. They will be given fruits that carry the same name and shape, so that they may recognise and desire them, but they will in fact taste differently. In the Garden they will be paired with their mates, who will not have any unpleasant traits that people have on earth; and they will live there in eternal bliss, unlike the bliss of the earth which is only temporary.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    مُتَشَابِهًا: فِي اللَّونِ، وَالْمَنْظَرِ، لَا فِي الطَّعْمِ.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (25) And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, This is what we were provided with before. And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  25. And give glad tidings to those who believe and do righteous good deeds, that for them will be Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise). Every time they will be provided with a fruit therefrom, they will say: This is what we were provided with before, and they will be given things in resemblance (i.e. in the same form but different in taste) and they shall have therein Azwâjun Mutahharatun [1] (purified mates or wives) and they will abide therein forever.

    Ayah: 26

    ۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَسۡتَحۡيِۦٓ أَن يَضۡرِبَ مَثَلٗا مَّا بَعُوضَةٗ فَمَا فَوۡقَهَاۚ فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ فَيَعۡلَمُونَ أَنَّهُ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّهِمۡۖ وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ فَيَقُولُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلٗاۘ يُضِلُّ بِهِۦ كَثِيرٗا وَيَهۡدِي بِهِۦ كَثِيرٗاۚ وَمَا يُضِلُّ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلۡفَٰسِقِينَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    إن الله سبحانه وتعالى لا يستحي من ضرب الأمثال بما شاء، فيضرب المثل بالبعوضة، فما فوقها في الكِبَر أو دونها في الصِّغَر، والناس أمام هذا نوعان: مؤمنون وكافرون، فأما المؤمنون فيصدقون ويعلمون أنّ من وراء ضرب المثل بها حكمة، وأما الكافرون فيتساءلون على سبيل الاستهزاء عن سبب ضرب الله الأمثال بهذه المخلوقات الحقيرة؛ كالبعوض، والذباب، والعنكبوت، وغيرها، فيأتي الجواب من الله: إن في هذه الأمثال هداياتٍ وتوجيهاتٍ واختبارًا للناس، فمنهم من يضلُّهم الله بهذه الأمثال لإعراضهم عن تدبرها، وهم كثير، ومنهم من يهديهم بسبب اتعاظهم بها، وهم كثير، ولا يضل إلا من كان مستحقًّا للضلال، وهم الخارجون عن طاعته؛ كالمنافقين.

    26. Allah does not shy away from using whatever example He wishes, whether that be of a gnat or anything bigger than it. The believers know and trust that there is wisdom in the use of such examples, while the disbelievers will make fun, asking each other why Allah uses examples with lowly creatures, such as gnats, flies and spiders. Allah replies that in these examples lie guidance, direction and a test for people. There are many people who are misguided by Allah through these examples, because they refuse to consider them; and there are many who He guides along the right path because they learn from them. He does not misguide anyone except those who deserve to be misguided. They are those who do not obey Him.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (26) Indeed, Allāh is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller[15] than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, What did Allāh intend by this as an example? He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient,

    [15]- Literally, above it, i.e., greater in smallness.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  26. Verily, Allâh is not ashamed to set forth a parable even of a mosquito or so much more when it is bigger (or less when it is smaller) than it. And as for those who believe, they know that it is the Truth from their Lord, but as for those who disbelieve, they say: What did Allâh intend by this parable? By it He misleads many, and many He guides thereby. And He misleads thereby only those who are Al-Fâsiqûn (the rebellious, disobedient to Allâh[2]).

    Ayah: 27

    ٱلَّذِينَ يَنقُضُونَ عَهۡدَ ٱللَّهِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مِيثَٰقِهِۦ وَيَقۡطَعُونَ مَآ أَمَرَ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦٓ أَن يُوصَلَ وَيُفۡسِدُونَ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡخَٰسِرُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    الذين ينقضون عهد الله الذي أخذه عليهم بعبادته وحده واتباع رسوله الذي أخبرت به الرسل قبله، ويقطعون ما أمر الله بوصله كالأرحام، ويسعون لنشر الفساد في الأرض بالمعاصي، فهؤلاء هم الناقصة حظوظهم في الدنيا والآخرة.

    27.Those who break the promise they made with God to serve Him alone and follow His way. This is in the verse, He made them testify concerning themselves: Am I not your Lord? They said, Yes, we bear witness!" (7:172) He affirmed this by sending the prophets and the scriptures. Those who do not take their promises with God seriously are those who cut off from things which God instructed not to, such as blood relations and they work to spread corruption on earth through their wrongdoing. They are the losers in this world and the next.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (27) Who break the covenant of Allāh after contracting it and sever that which Allāh has ordered to be joined and cause corruption on earth. It is those who are the losers.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  27. Those who break Allâh’s Covenant after ratifying it, and sever what Allâh has ordered to be joined (as regards Allâh’s religion of Islâmic Monotheism, and to practise its laws on the earth and also as regards keeping good relations with kith and kin[3]), and do mischief on earth, it is they who are the losers.

    [3] (V.2:27) Narrated Jubair bin Mut‘im رضي الله عنه that he heard the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saying, [القاطع] Al-Qâti‘ (the person who serves the bond of kinship) will not enter Paradise (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.8, Hadîth No. 13).

    Ayah: 28

    كَيۡفَ تَكۡفُرُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَكُنتُمۡ أَمۡوَٰتٗا فَأَحۡيَٰكُمۡۖ ثُمَّ يُمِيتُكُمۡ ثُمَّ يُحۡيِيكُمۡ ثُمَّ إِلَيۡهِ تُرۡجَعُونَ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    إن أمركم - أيها الكفار - لعجب! كيف تكفرون بالله، وأنتم تشاهدون دلائل قدرته في أنفسكم، فقد كنتم عدمًا لا شيء، فأنشأكم وأحياكم، ثم هو يميتكم الموتة الثانية، ثم يحييكم الحياة الثانية، ثم يرجعكم إليه ليحاسبكم على ما قدمتم.

    28. Strange is the situation of the disbelievers. How can you disbelieve the Oneness of Allah when you can see the signs of His power in your own existence? You were nothing, and He brought you to life; then you will die, and you shall be brought to life again. Then you will return to Him and be held accountable.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    English Translation - Saheeh International (28) How can you disbelieve in Allāh when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  28. How can you disbelieve in Allâh? seeing that you were dead and He gave you life. Then He will give you death, then again will bring you to life (on the Day of Resurrection) and then unto Him you will return (See V.40:11)

    Ayah: 29

    هُوَ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ لَكُم مَّا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِيعٗا ثُمَّ ٱسۡتَوَىٰٓ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَسَوَّىٰهُنَّ سَبۡعَ سَمَٰوَٰتٖۚ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَيۡءٍ عَلِيمٞ

    Al-Mukhtasar Fi Tafseer

    والله وحده الذي خلق لكم جميع ما في الأرض من أنهار وأشجار وغير ذلك مما لا يُحْصَى عدده، وأنتم تنتفعون به وتستمتعون بما سخَّره لكم، ثم قصد إلى خلق السماء فخلقهن سبع سماوات مستويات، وهو الذي أحاط علمه بكل شيء.

    29. It is Allah alone Who created everything on earth for you: the countless rivers, trees and so on, from which you benefit and enjoy. Then He turned to the sky, making it into seven heavens, and He has knowledge of everything.

    Arabic Language - Word Meaning

    اسْتَوَى: قَصَدَ.

    English Translation - Saheeh International (29) It is He who created for you all of that which is on the earth. Then He directed Himself[16] to the heaven, [His being above all creation], and made them seven heavens, and He is Knowing of all things.

    English Translation - Hilali and Khan  29. He it is Who created for you all that is on earth. Then He rose over (Istawâ) towards the heaven and made them seven heavens and He is the All-Knower of everything.
