“The First Lady of the Guitar?’
Liona Boyd bas been acclaimed throughout the |
world for her superlative performances as a class|cal
guitarist. Herakded as “the first lady of the guitar’?
she has enthralled classical and popular music audi-
ences alike. The San Francisco Chronicle called her
“The guitar world’s new superstar” and the New
York Times praised her “Mair for brilliance! “She
charmed the capacity audience with her masterful
technique and artistry” stated the London Free Press,
while Tokyo crities wrote, “beautiful playing rich in
variety; a marvelous performance that filled us with
joy”Liona began her study of the guitar at age 14
with Eli Kassner in Toronto. In 1972 she graduated
with honors from the University of Toronto's Musie
Faculty, and in the same yeat placed first for guitar in
the Canadian National Music Competition, She
studied with most of the world’s top guitarists inclu-
ding Julian Bream, Narcisco Yepes, Alirio Diaz. She
was the private student of Alexandre Lagoya for
almost 1wo years in Paris.
Liona has displayed her amazing virtuosity in
‘most of the major cites of North Anmterica, with por
formances in theatres from Carnegie Recital Hall,
New York, to the Amphitheater in Los Angeles. Her
tours have taken her to such varied territories as
Brazil, Chile, the Yukon, New Zealand, Peru and
Japan. Liona is a frequent performer on radio and
television (she starred in het own TY special) anid she
has appeared on many of the major U.S, shows, ine
luding Dinal Shore, Mone Carlo, Merv Griffin,
Mike Douglas, John Davidson, the Today Show and
Evening With The Boston Pops.

Boot labels sold with unprecedented success in bot

the popular and classical markets, Liona Boyd nowy
records for the Columbia Masterworks label. As well
as several solo albums, she has to her credit a re
‘cording with Andrew Davis and the English Chamber
Orchestra. Her versatility is displayed in an RCA
recording she made with Chet Atkins, entitled The
Furst Nashville Guitar Quartet, Liona was awarded
one of Canada’s coveted Juno Awards by the mest
industry for “Instrumental Anis of the Year's She is
also a recipient of the Vanier Award for her eur
contributions,
Several international composers have desis
their works to Liona, and in the past she has been ir}
vited to play for such distinguished persons’ as the
‘Queen of England, the Prime Minister of Cana, the
Chancellor of Germany, and the President of Mexicd.
