On behalf of the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC), the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), and the Programme Committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to the ninth biennial IADC/SPE Asia Pacific Drilling Technology Conference (APDT) scheduled 9-11 July 2012 in Tianjin, China. The theme of this conference is Catching the Unconventional Tide: Winning the Future Through Innovation. Although conventional development, especially in the offshore deepwater provinces, still dominate production capacity, the theme captures the rapidly growing importance of unconventional resources and the vital role that technology innovation will play in sustaining the worlds future energy demands. In order to address this years theme, the Technical Programme Committee has assembled a diverse and comprehensive technical programme, featuring presentations of more than 100 papers from around the world in technical and poster sessions. In addition, industry leaders will provide a variety of perspectives on the conference theme at the opening ceremony, keynote session, panel sessions, special sessions and daily topical luncheons. A technical exhibition will be held in conjunction with the conference, bringing together top organisations from around the world to display the latest in technological advancements and afford delegates the opportunity to share views, discuss challenges and consider potential solutions, all while networking with other industry professionals. In addition to the extensive technical programme and exhibition, two Training Courses will be held prior to the event on Sunday, 8 July, creating an opportunity for industry professionals to deepen their knowledge on the topics of Deepwater Drilling and Shale Gas. We anticipate a highly engaging 2012 APDT conference and look forward to you attending this professionally rewarding and enjoyable event.

the efficiency of drilling and completion technologies such as fracturing and horizontal drilling. Efforts to automate the drilling process have also taken a fast track and are seen as another step change to development of unconventional resources. Beyond the burgeoning pursuit of unconventionals, development of comparatively conventional resources, even deepwater, are increasingly looking to new advances in technology for an economic reprieve. Managed pressure drilling, HPHT techniques and other advances are leading the way for the industry to work in ever more extreme conditions, where the prize is greatest. Over time, the unconventional becomes conventional. This panel assembles experts with a range of expertise to discuss the progress industry has made to date, and the challenges lying ahead.

Geomechanical Consideration in Drilling, Completion and Stimulation of Shale Gas Reservoirs

0900-1700 hours Sunday, 8 July 2012 Tianjin Renaissance Lakeview Hotel

Provide the attendees with a broad overview of Deepwater Operations and an appreciation for the challenges faced, complexity involved and available equipment solutions.

Course objective:

Course Content: (subject to change)

Introduction to Deepwater Operations Deepwater Well Characteristics Well Control considerations in deep water Maximizing efficiency in Deepwater Operations DP station keeping New technology for deepwater applications

Course outline: This one-day course will take a close look at how Geomechanics can be utilized in shale gas developments in terms of drilling, completion and hydraulic fracturing optimizations. The goal is to apply the principles of Geomechanics, together with the knowledge of natural fracture distribution and properties, to improve drilling performance and maximize reservoir drainage volumes. Technical professionals should leave the course with an understanding of the following topics: Introduction to petroleum-related geomechanics Characterization of mechanical properties and strengths Characterization of in-situ stresses Basic concepts of rock failures and failure criteria Basic shale properties and their relationships to drilling and stimulation challenges Wellbore stability analysis Geomechanical shear stimulation Best well trajectory and quantifying competing requirements

Course instructor:
Barry is currently the Manager of Well Operations for Transoceans Well Operations Group. His group is responsible for providing well construction and well control support to Transoceans fleet. He began his career at Transocean in 1997 and has held various positions in the UK, middle east and Gulf of Mexico, including Rig Engineer, Offshore Drilling Engineer, Drilling Supervisor, Senior Drilling Engineer, Well Engineering Manager and Well Construction Manager. Barry holds a BEng in Civil Engineering from Queens University in Belfast Ireland and a Masters degree in Subsea Engineering from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh Scotland.

who Should attend: Petroleum, drilling and completion engineers, and geologists and petrophysicists working in a multidisciplinary asset team. Course instructor: See Hong Ong, GeoMechanics Internationals (GMI) Global Technical Advisor based in Houston, has more than 25 years of world-wide experience in petroleum engineering and petroleum-related geomechanics research and applications. He joined GMI after working for Baker Hughes in Houston as petroleum engineering and global geomechanics manager, and PETRONAS in Malaysia and Vietnam with both management and operational responsibilities. Dr. Ong, who has numerous publications in petroleum geomechanics and has taught several industry short courses in oilfield geomechanics, received his B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in petroleum engineering from the University of Oklahoma, USA.
