Review Process

CALL FOR PAPERS


Journal of Levantine Studies (JLS) is a peer-reviewed journal published by the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute. It is dedicated to the critical study of the social, political, and cultural settings which, in various periods of history, have been known as the Levant. As a new platform for theoretical and empirical scholarship, JLS aims to reclaim the notion of the Levant as a historical and political concept and as a category of identity and classification. JLS publishes articles that engage contemporary academic discussions on relevant sociopolitical topics, including but not limited to: Cosmopolitanism and cross-border movements Diaspora communities and networks Religion, secularism, and postsecularism Migrations of knowledge and people Religious and political thought Cultural and geopolitical categories Journal of Levantine Studies is published biannually in English, both in print and online. Abstracts of published articles appear in Arabic, Hebrew, and Turkish. Submissions and manuscripts will pass a blind peerreview process before they are accepted for publication. Authors should be careful to avoid any references in the text that might reveal their identity to referees. Instead, please include a cover page with the title of the submission, authors name, affiliation, email address, and telephone number.
Submission Restrictions

Please do not submit materials that have been published or are set to be published elsewhere. Please obtain permission from copyright holders where necessary (for example, when citing stanzas of a poem, maps, photographs, posters, tables, figures, or text exceeding the maximum length permitted by Copyright Law).
Articles

Please review our submission guidelines available online before submitting your manuscript. Articles should feature original research or analysis and should contain no more than 10,000 words. Please include a short abstract (up to 150 words) that summarizes the content and main argument of your article.
Book Reviews and Review Essays

Book reviews should contain approximately 600 to 1200 words. Review essays that offer a comparative review of several books or articles should total around 3,000 to 5,000 words in length. Please see our submission guidelines for more details.
