11 Things You May Not Know About World Cup 2011

Sehwag and Tendulkar were the least likely batsmen in the Indian team to take India to victory.

Yuvraj not the highest impact player of the 2011 World Cup.

was

Not that your life is incomplete or meaningless without

knowing these facts (or our version of the truth, if you must get snotty), but some of it is actually rather interesting, if this sort of stuff intrigues you. By taking the scorecards of all the matches played in last years World Cup through Impact Index, some interesting things came up which probably wont enter your consciousness otherwise, especially not after a year. Maybe youll find a few of these interesting. 1. Yuvraj Singhs bowling impact in the tournament was higher than his batting impact Indias highest impact player in the tournament is remembered the most for his scintillating 57 in the quarter final against Australia (at absolute crunch-time), maybe even for his devastating 113 against West Indies in their last group game all memorable batting performances. Yuvraj was actually Indias fourth-highest impact batsman in the tournament (after Tendulkar, Gambhir and Dhoni) but second-highest impact bowler (after Zaheer Khan and ahead of Harbhajan Singh) his consistency with the ball not quite as eye-catching perhaps. But it had a huge role to play in Indias victory. 2. Yuvraj Singh was not the highest impact player of the tournament While Yuvraj was Indias highest impact player by a distance (362 runs, 15 wickets, Econ 5.0), interestingly, Dilshan (who

scored 500 runs and took 8 wickets, Econ 4.1) had a higher impact than him in the tournament (Dilshan had a higher impact right through the knockouts). As did Brad Haddin (332 runs) whose consistency with the bat was remarkable his contribution as a wicketkeeper overlooked. As was Sangakkaras, whose tournament impact came very close to Yuvrajs too. The logic of these awards necessarily going to a member of the winning team is fundamentally flawed in a team sport also partially responsible for 36% of the Man-of-the-Match awards in this tournament that were not given to the highest impact players in those matches (this was still better than the norm of 45% being wrong overall the flat subcontinental pitches often producing such high impact batting performances that they were indisputably highest impact from any angle). 3. The highest impact batting innings in World Cup 2011 (only in a match context) was not Kevin OBriens. Kevin OBriens stunning 113 is considered the showpiece innings of the tournament. But AB de Villiers 107 against West Indies in Delhi (coming in to bat at 20-2, chasing 223), registered more impact than Kevin OBriens innings (coming in at 111-5, chasing 328). While OBriens landmark (in an Irish context) performance had him absorb more pressure and achieve a higher match relative strike rate than de Villiers innings, ultimately, de Villiers made

24% of the runs in the match (despite registering Pressure IMPACT) while OBrien made 17% of the runs in his match the main reason for the difference which also reveals how many runs there were on those respective pitches. There is no doubting OBriens dominance of the proceedings when he exploded, but those who follow South Africa would know how fragile they can get under pressure (especially in the World Cup) - while the target of 222 may have been achieved very comfortably in the end, anything could have happened if de Villiers had not taken charge at that point. 4. The highest impact Irish batsman in the World Cup was not Kevin OBrien While Kevin OBriens magical innings made him the poster boy of Irish cricket, most have automatically assumed he was his teams most (if not only) successful batsman. The truth is that his brother beat him to it Niall OBrians batting impact was actually more in the tournament. Not because of the measly 7 runs more than he made (at a considerably lower strike-rate than Kevin), but because his failure rate was a good 17% lower than Kevins with the bat he was just more reliable and consistent. Moreover, despite the fact that Kevin also bowled (and was a genuine all-rounder), Niall was Irelands highest impact player too (narrowly this time) because he

was also the wicketkeeper. semi-finals was not unexpected.

New

5. New Zealands entry to the semis was not unexpected. Neither was South Africas exit New Zealand had lost 0-4 to Bangladesh in an ODI series there just before the World Cup and their chances were considerably reduced by fans, experts and bookies alike when this tournament began. However, they were the fourth-highest impact side on career numbers (as per the Impact scale) and showed considerably more potential than were given credit for. A key attribute they had as a team was their considerable ability to absorb pressure (based on how much the individual players had done over the careers), which was always likely to stand them in good stead in a knockout match.

As it happened, they could not have done better than to meet pre-tournament favourites South Africa in the quarter-finals, which, as a team had an alarmingly low Pressure IMPACT always likely to get them into trouble in the crunch moments (and had given them the tag of chokers for a while now). The rest is history of course, but as per Impact Index, this was not at all unexpected, as per our pre-tournament analysis (published in The Times of India before the World Cup began.) 6. The Indian batsman to absorb the most pressure in the tournament was Virat Kohli While Sachin Tendulkar made the most runs for India in the tournament and registered the highest impact (primarily because of his runs tally), and Yuvraj Singh had the highest batting average, an unsung hero for India was Virat Kohli (unnoticed for his 282 runs at an average of 35) who absorbed the most pressure for India right through the tournament. He came under pressure thrice during the tournament and he had a 100% absorption rate a very promising sign of things to come (which, of course did with great clarity this year).

7.The two batsmen to absorb the maximum pressure in the World Cup were both from England It is interesting that the two batsmen to absorb the most

pressure in the tournament were both from the side that provided the most thrills in the tournament by losing to Ireland and Bangladesh but defeating South Africa and tying with India. Ravi Bopara and Jonathan Trott rescued England 5 times between them. 8. The highest impact batsman in the tournament was Jonathan Trott from England Perhaps the most underrated batsman in world cricket today (in both Tests and ODIs), Trotts sustained performance in this tournament was special. Though he had the fourth-highest runs tally in the tournament and the tenth-highest batting average, he was the highest impact batsman in World Cup 2011. His batting failure rate of just 14% was amongst the lowest in the tournament, his runs tally significantly high within the context of every match, his pressure-absorption very high (as mentioned above) he was the main reason why England competed so hard, so often in the tournament. 9. Only two batsmen achieved a 0% failure rate in the tournament. Both their sides failed to reach even the semis. It is interesting that the two batsmen who achieved a 0% batting failure rate right through the tournament (quite an achievement) AB de Villiers of South Africa and Brad Haddin from Australia, could not take their teams past the

quarter-finals. Cup.

Harvir Baidwan was o

10. The highest impact bowler from non-Test-playing nations was originally from Chandigarh 23-year-old Harvir Singh Baidwan was the highest impact bowler in the tournament, amongst those who played from the non-Test playing nations. He plays for Canada and is originally from Kapil Dev and Yuvraj Singhs hometown. 11. Even before Indias innings began in the World Cup final, Sehwag and Tendulkar were the least likely batsmen in the Indian team to take India to victory This was an Impact Index observation made when the score

was 31-2 in the World Cup final, when Tendulkar had just been dismissed. As it happened, out of the seven batsmen in the Indian team, the five with the highest impact when it came to chasing in pressure situations were Gambhir, Kohli, Yuvraj, Dhoni and Raina and if India had to choose two batsmen to leave out in that situation, they would be Sehwag and Tendulkar. The rest is history. And this same story has become even clearer in the one year that has gone by since April 2nd, 2011.

Parliament vs. Team ANNA

April 01, 2012 In a rare moment of bi-partisanship, the entire Indian Parliament joined hands to condemn Team Anna for its attack on the political class. Interestingly, Sushma Swaraj of the BJP, unwittingly highlighted the irony of the predicament when she said, If MPs were looters, corrupt and rapists, then why did Team Anna send three of its demands to be incorporated in a resolution passed by Parliament. The answer to this question says it all. The civil society has no other option but to beg and plead before an institution which is home to many who have serious cases against them and would be directly affected should Lokpal become a reality. Arguing about the who said what and whether it was appropriate would be case of not seeing the forest for the tress. Clearly, this Parliament vs. Team Anna struggle has wider implications for Indias future. If you disregard for a moment the individual players in this struggle, their motivations and their allegiances, it does raise some very important issues that warrant significant public debate. Over the last sixteen months, the anti-corruption movement has been a major part of the publics pre-occupation and a primary cause for an overall sense of dissatisfaction. Despite this, thanks to coalition politics, lack of leadership, and political will, virtually nothing has been accomplished to address these legitimate concerns of the people. Sadly, cases of corruption continue to be unearthed, the most recent being the one involving our Army. On the law and order front, RTI activists have been routinely killed over the years and most

11

recently, Narendra Singh, an IPS officer, was crushed to death supposedly by the mining mafia in MP. Our Parliament has little to show in terms of concrete action on any of these fronts. The question arises as to where the country goes from here. What is the solution to this legislative paralysis? Clearly, the UPA-2 is struggling to deliver at the center. At the state level over the last few years in Tamil Nadu, the corrupt Karunanidhi dynasty is out, while Jayalilitha is back despite her checkered past. In UP, SPs goondagiri is in, Mayawatis megalomania is out. In Kerala, the fractious CPI(M)-led LDF is out, the precarious UDF is in. If this trend continues, the Congress could be out, to be replaced by the BJP at the center in 2014. Karnataka, home to Indias Silicon Valley, is a perfect example to illustrate that Indias major opposition party is no different from the ruling Congress. Former CM Yeddyurappa, who was forced to resign after the Lokayuktha report, is now on a serious comeback trail. When he was forced to resign, Mr. Yeddyurappa first claimed health issues to escape arrest and then he turned around with a Terminator-like Ill be back pronouncement. True to his word, he is back with full gusto. Now a free man with renewed zeal to return to power, Mr. Yeddyurappa managed to whisk away MLAs in a despicable show of strength, thereby causing grave uneasiness for the top BJP leadership. On the one hand, the BJP wants to portray a clean image in the hope of riding the prevalent anti-corruption sentiments of the people, while on the other, its ranks are replete with the likes of Mr. Yeddyurappa, much like the Congress. In short, swapping the Congress for the BJP at the center in 2014 is a replay of state-level politics at the national

12

stage. It simply isnt going to help. If you disregard the Gandhi dynasty and throw in some saffron toppings, you cant really tell the difference between the two major parties. In light of this, will installing the BJP in place of the equally incompetent and corrupt Congress really help the countrys cause? Havent we seen this movie before? We have exercised our electoral choices to throw out those in power once every five years. But has that helped resolve our most pressing issues? Kerala, our most literate state, has for the last several state elections spanning decades, routinely thrown out the incumbent party in favor of the opposition. Has this helped Kerala in the long run? A relative of mine in her 80s put this in perspective when she said, These parties are all the same. There are good people, there are corrupt people. Might as well give them all an equal chance! While surely insightful and filled with wisdom, one cant help but sense more than a degree of abject defeatism in this mindset. Albert Einstein said, Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. We have been there, done it for sixty-plus years and its apparent that our current systems are badly flawed. It is time to re-think and reform the very institutions that make up our democracy. Our parliamentarians must quit whining, stop playing victim, and get on with the business of passing effective laws, and let their accomplishments speak for themselves.

Austerity Drive by Akhilesh

March 30, 2012 ~ 32 cars less in fleet as Akhilesh goes on austerity drive Surprising even his officials, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has issued orders to cut down the cars in his fleet from 40 to just eight and also ordered the specialised hospital operating in his official residence to shut down. Thirty-two cars have been ordered to be taken away from the chief minister's fleet and repatriated to the Rajya Sampatti Vibhag (state property wing), a senior official with the chief minister's security said. "The only cars that would now be accompanying the motorcade of the chief minister would be a a fleet of ambassadors and an SUV fitted with jammers," the official told IANS. The chief minister has also ordered the highly specialised hospital within his official residence to be shut down immediately and said that doctors on duty be sent to hospitals where they are needed more, officials said. This hospital was formed in 2008 on orders of Mayawati and cost the state exchequer Rs.75 lakh per annum had a medical superintendent, 22 pharmacists, a dozen nurses, four hi-tech ambulances and specialist doctors on 24x7 duty. The latest move of the 38-year-old chief minister, who has also opened the doors of sprawling official residence for common people, is in stark departure from his predecessor Mayawati who moved around the city in hooter fitted cars and a fleet of 40-plus cars. These included three jammer fitted cars, an ambulance and a fleet of cars of city police and traffic cops. Akhilesh Yadav has also done away with other security regulations such as

14

stopping of traffic when the chief minister's convoy passes and the use of hooters whenever he moves. "This is the real face of Samajwad (socialism) where every one, even the chief minister is treated alike," said Rajendra Chowdhary, spokesperson of the Samajwadi Party and a close aide of the chief minister. Also, in a state where government officials and employees are used to a five-day week, Akhilesh Yadav threw in a surprise when he turned up at his annexe office on a Saturday, quietly and unnoticed without the usual horn honking and siren blaring entourage following him. The SUVs specially imported for Mayawati's fleet have also been grounded, a source said.

If I am not wrong, these are just show off acts of a new chief minister after he assumes office. All chief ministers do it. Our own Mamta didi also did the same thing after she assumed office. She visited all the hospitals after she assumed office to show she meant business. She also kicked out a doctor from one of the hospitals. But, thereafter, the action fizzled out. Babies and patients are dying in all hospitals and girls are being raped and killed almost every day with Mamta didi claiming that the lady in question who has been raped, is lying. We will only be convinced with Akhilesh only if he can improve the law & order in UP and improve efficiency of government employees and confiscate the properties of corrupt officials. Can he do it? If not, then let him make way for Nitish Kumar in the next elections for if he does not, Nitish will swoop down on UP also. One thing worries me. What will Akhilesh do with the

15

elephants installed by Mayawati? Will he send them back to the jungles?

NIRMAL BABA KI JAI

March 10, 2012

Nirmal Baba needs no introduction. In India, he has become a household name. Basically, he is a spiritual guru, but with a little bit of difference. The inherent difference within Nirmal Baba also makes him a suspicious guru. The sudden rise of popularity of Nirmal Baba is really astonishing. Today only Ramdev Baba can be termed as more popular than him. The popularity of Nirmal Baba is because of some so called divine power that he is endowed with. He is said to be the person with perfect sixth sense. He claims to heal anyone from any sort of disease, even Cancer and AIDS, without even a personal contact. He is quite confident about his vashikaran mantra by which he can control the thinking power of anyone on this planet. And, the most important thing is that if you follow his samagams on television channels, then you will find that lots of people claim there that they have been really blessed with healing power of Nirmal Baba.

Why does he look suspicious?

Despite showing his healing power to the whole world through electronic media, Nirmal Baba looks quite suspicious. He looks like a fraudster masquerading as a spiritual guru. Lets have a look on some point:

17

1.Though, Nirmal Baba is no more offering vashikaran mantra, but it is a fact that his popularity rose because of this. But, the question remains. How come a mantra can control someone? It is not mantra, in fact, but it is his psychological tricks which controls someone. He doknow and apply hypnotism. However, it is simply impossible to use a mantra to control someone who is far away from Nirmal Baba. The fact is he offers the same mantra to everyone. I wonder why he didnt contact Manmohan Singh to use this mantra against anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazaare? Or, why he doesnt offer this mantra to a business personality to crush the cut throat competition by controlling the competitor? By going this way he will definitely earn more. The crux of the matter is the fact that there is no mantra worth offering. He is only earning money from gullible people. 2. Little is known about the history of Nirmal Baba. Even, very little public knowledge is available about his current work current business life. What he is doing with crores of rupees that he is earning per month? His followers say that somewhere out of blue Nirmal Baba got the divine power. I wonder why the nature selected him to give these 'divine powers' when the person is not going to offer it free to anyone? Nirmal Baba is just using tricks of medieval India's Brahmans to make his wallet heavier and heavier. Like Brahmans he also doesn't offer anything free to anyone, not even for a person dying because of hunger. (The use ofBrahman here has nothing to do with caste-ism.) 3. Why does he charge money from his followers? If one wants to participate in his samagams then one needs to make a payment of Rs. 2,000. Payment should be made through a bank

18

challan and devotee needs to keep one counterfoil of that challan. Send the other to the designated office in Delhi and after the confirmation of registration they will send an SMS (What if you don't have mobile phone?). On the date of registered samagam, devotee needs to go there with the counterfoil challan and a valid ID proof. Only these two documents can ensure a pass for the samagam. Oh Gosh!!!! Is it an online test for CAT? Even UPSC doesn't ask for so much documents. The whole process from charging money from followers to issuing pass stretches the credulity about the veracity of these samagams. Why a spiritual guru who is out there needs original photo I-cards from his followers? 4. If Nirmal Baba is really endowed with divine power to do anything that can be imagined, then what is stopping him from doing something real for the humanity? Why his home country is still reeling under poverty? Yes, he is not responsible for poverty and destitution that India has, but certainly he is a living example of the reason behind the poverty of India. 5. Baba asks money from bank challan. That must be appreciated. It means to say that at least his earning through his followers is being recorded by official manner. Is it useful? Nah!! Some spiritual gurus in India are very shrewd. When it comes to money they can even surprise icons like Warren Buffet. They run lots of fake trusts and NGOs to avoid any taxes. Few years ago, a private Hindi news channel ran a story about some spiritual gurus who were showing the modus operandi of changing black money to white in India through their trusts and NGOs. Kirit Bhai was one of those gurus

19

involved in that scandal. Then, as a college student I used to be a deep follower of Kirit Bhai, but........... [Do you want to see the power of Indian spiritual guru? If yes, then search IBN7 Video of that scandal involving four self styled gurus. I have just tried unsuccessfully. There is no video available.] 6. If Nirmal Baba is running a business then one should not object about that. But, why he over glorifies himself. Just watch a samagam and you will see people telling so much appreciating words about Baba before baba and see a smiling Baba. That must be considered as the lowest level of self-glorification. He loves sycophants. [ On Aaj Tak (Nov. 2011) ---- Bhakt: Baba, In last Samagam I asked for a home and you gave me a Bungalow. Now, I want...this, this and that. Baba sitting on a royal chair just waved his hand. ----- ] So, Baba has given him a bungalow for just Rs. 2,000. What about Indira Aawaas Yojna? Government should forward money to Nirmal Baba, Nehru Place rather than spending money in Government schemes. Everyone involved in this new wave of pseudo spiritualism in India is doing a crime. From Aasharam Bapu, Kirit Bhai, Ramdev Baba to this Nirmal Baba. Television Channels must tell viewers that these episodes are ADVERTISEMENT to sell a product, Government must regulate these Baba, and most importantly people who are feeling insecure should never think that these Baba can make them out of their quagmire. 7. One needs to see how people describe about the healing effects of Nirmal Baba. A student who was not studying since five years got job because of Nirmal Baba. Surprising, isnt it? What about that student who remained in the waiting list

20

despite studying to his capacity. There were so many sagas about results and jobs that you will instantly find the answer about the age long question that why India is not able to produce a Google, Microsoft, or i-Pod. 8. People like Nirmal Baba thrive on placebo effect. A person can be treated without any sort of medication if there is strong belief within him. 10% devotees who are told by Baba that they will be fine turn out to be fine only because of this Placebo Effect. 90% never get healed and they continue to wonder about their sins. (Example of Placebo Effect: Magnetic Therapy - It has been proved by rigorous scientific test that Magnetic Therapy doesn't have any therapeutic advantage, but still people are using it and surprisingly it has done wonder on some.) If your heart says that you SHOULD GET BETTER KNOW since you are being treated then more often than not you WILL. For information on Placebo Effect and how it applies to our batch of gurus see Wikipedia entry. 9. If you dont have money then Nirmal Baba will not love you. He will not allow you to see his face without making a payment. I must mention here that he always bless all people who are present there and who are watching television programs. 10. What is the theory behind Daswand? He asks his followers to deposit a part of income to someone which may give a sort of guarantee for continuing KRIPA. That part of income which has been offered is called Daswand. The theory is quite simple. Talk with 100 people. Discuss in the most idiotic way about their problems. Give laughable solutions like eating 20 mangoes. And, leave that on the age long principle of Geeta. That is Karma. 10 out of hundred will definitely find themselves

21

out of quagmire. Expect 2 out of those ten to send Daswand. And, keep earning money.

JUST CHECK OUT VIDEOS OF SOME OF HIS SAMAGAM'S ...YOU WILL COME TO KNOW EVERYTHING EXACTLY

December 20, 2011 Embedded File () David Percy's evidence from photographs, and from comparison of moving films supposedly taken on the moon, and photos. Evidence includes lighting of detail which should be in intense shadow; lighting evidence on all the photos, including spotlight effects; technical issues with cameras and their positioning. There is of course abundant other evidence: no delays in transmission and reception, for example. This 50-min programme only scratches the surface. However, it's a valuable introductory overview piece of the Apollo fakery and conspiracy since the 1950s.

Internet censorship
December 10, 2011

Kapil Sibal is trying to censor what we see on the Internet. It's crazy -- we don't live in China, this is a democracy! Let's use the Internet and social media to get Sibal to withdraw his ridiculous proposal. Kapil Sibal, Telecom Minister, is trying to impose a gag order after a website mocked Sonia Gandhi. Now he wants websites to take down anything deemed "objectionable". What an overreaction -- in England people make harsh jokes about the Queen with no consequences. If enough of us tell Sibal it's his plan that's objectionable, he'll see sense and withdraw it. This is not the first time that internet freedom in India has been under attack. Just this April, our government issued incredibly restrictive rules that gives it the power to take down any site under vague pretexts like curtailing blasphemy or protecting national security. But this new rule would make internet censorship so much worse it forces internet providers to remove content before its ever seen by the public. This is extreme by any standard -- even many dictatorships grant more internet freedom than this. Our government claims that this policy will protect India from material that may hurt religious diversity, and from terrorists who may use the internet to organize. But we know that internet censorship also allows the government to clamp down on the right to dissent, organize, and stand up for our rights a

31

keystone of any real democracy. Over the past few years, weve witnessed the internets power to galvanize, unify and change society, from the Arab Spring to Anna Hazares campaign against corruption. Weve also seen the crippling effect that internet censorship can have in countries like China and Iran. Lets unite and crush the most powerful censorship threat Indias ever seen.

GAME of cricket
December 09, 2011

SHOULD WE GIVE EXTREME IMPORTANCE TO THE CRICKET GAME? -There are more than 120 crores of people dwelling in India and nearly 84 crores of people among them are extremely poor. Its not the thing that we dont have money in our nation. We do have money, but unfortunately its concentrated in the hands of few corrupt politicians, businessmen, celebrities, mafia kings, etc. If this money was equally distributed among the common people, then India would be the developed country.Hockey is the national game of India. But most of the Indians dont even know the name of even a single Hockey player. On the other hand,Cricket is been given extreme importance. The Cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar,Mahendra Singh Dhoni, etc. are given crores of rupees and huge land pieces. On the other hand, there are farmers who are having shortage of land for farming and so they have to undergo lots of problems.Shouldnt those poor farmers get some land for improving their farming?During Earthquakes,Floods and Tsunamis, many people play with their life in order to save other peoples life.Shouldnt such brave people get some reward? There are some talented people in several other fields, who have been awarded by the president of India, but still

33

their economic condition is so poor that they are getting it difficult to earn their livelihood.Shouldnt these talented people given some economic help?According to the news reports, the government is offering Tax discount for the International Cricket Council(ICC) and on the other side, they are using the publics income tax money for the Cricket expenditures.Shouldnt someone go and stop all these non-sense?In the states like Uttarakhand, their are lots of people starving. The condition of National Highways there is so worse. There are no hospitals, schools and Colleges in small villages there. The small children have to walk miles for going to schools.Instead of providing proper facilities to them, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand has offered the Cricketers the land pieces and houses.Shouldnt he think about the poor people there?

WHAT HAS CRICKET GIVEN INDIA? -In the name of Cricket, lots of money and resources are getting wasted. How?When the Cricket matches are held, the soft drinks of American companies like Pepsi,Coca-Cola,Thumbs-up,Sprite are being sold on a large scale. The Lays,Cheetos,Kurkure chips are sold on a large scale. In this way,we are giving lots of money to the American Companies and our economy is declining.Lots of people skip their jobs for watching the matches. This affects the development of the country. The students cant concentrate on

34

their studies.People waste lots of electricity for watching match 5-6 hours. In that too,the advertisements of the foreign companies are being shown which divert the minds of the people towards the use of foreign goods. Is there any profit for the common man?Absolutely not.Only the Cricketers are gaining profit, the government is gaining profit, the ICC is gaining profit, the American Companies are gaining profit and not the common man.The common man is just loosing his money in Soft Drinks,Wafers and Chips,Fire Crackers which cause lots of Noise pollution and Air pollution,Beers and Wines(which result in the liver failure),etc.Just think if the people stop doing all this, what will happen?Lots of electricity will be saved which is getting wasted for watching the match for hours, the American Cold Drink companies and wafer companies will not be able to loot money from India, the unnecessary wastage of money in firecrackers will be prevented and hence the noise and air pollution will also be prevented.People will be able to concentrate that saved time for their work, for their family. The students will be able to concentrate on their studies. In short, the boycott of Cricket will save us from the wastage of resources and time and also from economic drain and corruption and also from noise and air pollution caused due to firecrackers. If you have really agreed with what you have read here, please tell this to everyone. One man or Two cant do this. But if we realize everyone, then surely we can bring a great change in the future of our country.Jai Hind.

Lokayukta in Bihar state

November 18, 2011 Unfortunately in this country, politicians are not interested in making strong laws to catch the culprits or criminals. The laws are followed of the 18th century made by British raj which reflected the relevence of that time and that is why the killer of Jesica Lal Manu Sharma who is serving life snetence in Tihar jail, in-spite of his earlier bad records released on parole. It is said that the laws followed for parole are outdated. The point I am trying to make is, parlamentarians who are suppose to make laws have not made one single law against corruption in last 65 years of our independece. The old laws are working in their own interest and the loop holes in laws are leting them go scotfree with the loot of this nation. The reason why politicians are against introduction of strong laws against corrupt at all levels in the governance and administration is, in the present system, from top to bottom, loot is shared, from the patewallah (Peon)at the Sachivalaya. It actually starts from him at that level. So it is not surprising Nitish Kumar is trying to p*** Lokpal Bill which has no teeth and which will not catch many involved in corruption from government offices. He is a shrewed politician like people at the centre trying only to take the credit keeping their eyes on the coming elections. It is simply fooling around with the voters and nothing more. It is only politics and that is why Anna and his team, is targeted by corrupt people like Digvijaya Singh, P. Chidambaram, and many other Congressmen.Time has come, these corrupt politicians must be shown the door and their place.

Empowering laws in existing system

November 12, 2011

Had our forefathers shown foresight in two areas, we would have been a different country today. First, population control and, second, professional, independent and accountable policing. What got to me was the extent of discretionary and unaccountable power the police in India could exercise. What made it even worse was that if that same power was correctly deployed, it could have provided justice to so many suffering people. I was not alone in this belief. There were several others - then and now - who serve with missionary zeal. The country is full of people who want to dedicate themselves to the good of the people. But the system does not enable them. There is clear evidence that corruption in our system is an epidemic today. This country has nearly 1.60 million cops in 35 state and Union territory police forces - this number includes special units such as anti-corruption bureaus, economic offence wings, vigilance departments and the like - and over 13,000 police stations. But despite this entire infrastructure, when did we hear of any top political leader, civil servant, police officer or corporate chief booked for corruption by the local police? Do we really mean to say none of the 'known' scams which made news in the past could have been detected by the state police?

38

We are talking of over 64 years of policing of independent India. This long record of failure raises a laundry list of questions. Why could the local police not detect, investigate, arrest and successfully prosecute the concerned powerful people themselves? Why did the senior courts - either suo motu or by citizens' initiatives - have to intervene? What was happening before theRight to Information Act less than six years ago? Was there no corruption then? Did none of the bureaucrats and police chiefs know what was going on? And if they knew, what did they do? If they didn't do anything, why not? Has anyone been punished for non-performance? Even though we are living in a democracy, our governance systems enslave the police. There is a constant external exercise of power aimed at controlling personnel entirely by taking over decisions to do with appointments, transfers, suspensions, promotions and even reappointments after retirement. The situation is such that to lodge an FIR against anyone important requires the specific approval and support of the highest political authorities. Why has this happened and what is the solution? Dating back to Independence, the political class, backed by the civil services, has not allowed the police to be independently accountable. It has maintained control over it for political purposes; that is why it has not amended the Police Act of 1861 which perpetuates political and bureaucratic control over the police. Supreme Court judgments declare that the police are accountable to law - and they are right. But between the law and the police is a whole class of powerful people. These

39

people block and make decisions that, by right, the police should be making. They make the police rank and file subservient. There are notable exceptions to all this, of course, but in general this includes the police leadership as well. While the Indian police is not independent as a system, some individuals within it are. And so, unless the system is cleansed, these individuals will continue to fight and fade away. If the current anti-corruption movement has to take root, two things need to be done urgently. One is to free the police from political and bureaucratic control. Let it be governed by a state police secu-rity commission board, comprising the state home minister, chief/home secretary, leader of the opposition, a few civil society representatives and the director general of police as member secretary. Perhaps the Supreme Court could ensure the implementation of its own judgment in letter and spirit. Until police headquarters are made strictly accountable to the law and overseen by independent, neutral boards, state police will remain mere onlookers to corruption of which they may well have full knowledge. The perception of police neutrality and trust-worthiness has to be re-established via empowerment, both within the service and outside. The Lokpal with Lokayuktas needs to work in tandem with a rejuvenated police, with assured legal protection to whistleblowers, and even reward schemes in place. If that is done, we may see a moral revolution in this country within our lifetimes.

Team Anna Expansion..

October 28, 2011 Expansion of core committee is not bad, but taking hasty step in light of targeted attack from congress is certainly going to set a bad precedence. Iran Bedi may be wrong morally, but it is doubtful that she is wrong legally. Corruption has been defined as misuse of official position for personal gain. I do not think that in light of this accepted definition she can be termed corrupt on account of diverting saved money to her public work. Kejriwal's case is nothing but what we say,ULTA CHOR KOTWAL KO DAATE.(Thief scolding the police officer). In fact action should be initiated against those officers of IT department who did not take action on his application for such a long period, ,where as, as per service contract, he is supposed to be out of service after three months' notice period and he is not bound to attend the duty after three months. So far his bond period is concerned apparently he does not look guilty on this count also. Even if there was doubt, action should have been taken in that three months period, which was notice period. Those who are murmuring on this issue are either ignorant of these simple facts or dragging the issue due to their vested interest Kejriwal is young. He might not have faced many hurdles in his service period, but what hurdles Kiran Bedi has faced through out her service period is well known. In nutshell persons like me, who want this movement to succeed ,can only suggest that do not go after the crow, first see your ears.

First of all very happy diwali to all of you.May this diwali enlighten us from inside so that we couid be able to sustain all type of fierce and forces coming upon our ways. A bit while ago i was thinking of the diwali week we used to have in our school days.Waiting for the festival from a long duration and buying crackers very early used to be the prime excitment motion.Drying crackers in sunlight was so funny when had to guard against the fear of my idiot friends taking away the pieces. On the day of festiv nothing was asusual since arranging 'DIYAS','CANDLES',and our sacred costum of burning evils from each room of our house to a outside place and having dinner after that really gives me a profound feeling of being away from my dear ones.

42

Everything have changed now,no crackers,no excitments..being busy from morning today in various tasks fed the whole day time that need to be completed wiithin stipulated time else MY DIWALI would be possible. U know actually the festivals dint remained as such it used to be.Changing lifestyle, increasing workloads, aspirations from oneself have led this memorable moments to cherish into a routine task that is accomplished just for the sake of formality. Anyways the prime facto of the festiv must remain within our heart and there is a great need to understand the culture thoroughly and lea the tradition in a expressed way as to make the next generation feel comfortable and worthy of oneself.

Kashmir Issue
October 24, 2011 In 1947, when the British granted India its independence, Mohammed Ali Jinnah wanted a separate country for Muslim majority ares of India. So the erstwhile British Empire of India was split into West Paksitan, India and East Pakistan. There were around five hundred princely states in India that were given the choice of joining the Paksitani union or the Indian union. Kashmir was ruled by a Hindu King of the dogra dynasty, and was given a choice to join either state. While he was dithering between joining India or becoming an independent country, the Pakistani army attacked Kashmir from the west, thinking it would be a quick battle. But the King of Kashmir asked India for help. India agreed to help on the condition that Kashmir would be part of the Indian Republic. The king hastily signed a document agreeing to join the union of India. The Pakistanis felt that he had no right to do that since the majority of his subjects were Muslim and would have sided with Pakistan and appealed to the international community to restore Kashmir to Pakistan, or let the people have their say. However, in the eyes of the world, Pakistan had forfeited any moral high ground because of their treacherous attack on an unguarded kingdom. So though they tried hard to get the United Nations involved later, they never mustered any international backing to their cause. IT left them feeling bitter and frustrated and they felt the whole world was against them and had unfairly sided with India.

44

After the 1947 war, India controlled the best parts of the Kashmir valley (Jammu and Kashmir) and Pakistan occupied the rest, which is mostly uninhabitable. The recent devastating earthquakes in 2006 were almost entirely on the Pakistani side of Kashmir.Pakistan's founding politicians were so bitter that they swore a 'thousand year struggle' to get Kashmir 'back' from the Indians. Though, in the intervening sixty years, most Pakistanis have lost any hope of getting it 'back', and also have lost all fervor to get Kashmir to join Pakistan, no politician can openly say it is time they gave up and moved on.It is analogous to the US-Cuba situation. But in case of Paksitan the cost of this unending quarrel with India is enormous. They are forced to invest horrendous amounts of money in a fight with an enemy who is many times larger in terms of population, many times larger in terms of land and has grown into an economic powerhouse many times larger than Paksitan. In their desperation to harm India the Pakistani military tried twice to invade India (1965 and 1999) and was beaten back. This obsession with Kashmir and India has had serious and crippling consequenses to Pakistan's democracy. Military coups became a common place in Pakistan and democratically elected rulers were murdered, or usurped and put in prison by the military generals. The military became the dominanat institution in the country and destroyed democratic institutions and encouraged religious fanaticism. In 1971, to add insult to injury East Pakistan broke away from West Pakistan to become Bangladesh. In the ensuing years, Paksitanis have invested

45

Billions in a nuclear bomb, untold amounts in a vast Military machine and also spawned various 'Jihad' outfits which have come back to haunt Pakistan in the form of uncontrolled domestic terrorism. The western countries try to get the Kashmir issue solved in the hope that Pakistan will then focus on the terrorists that have made Pakistan their home. But the hatred of Hindus runs deep in the Pakistani establishment and there is no end in sight to this issue.

46

Indian Media
October 22, 2011 The Indian media display certain defects. These should ideally be addressed and corrected in a democratic manner. But if the media prove incorrigible, harsh measures may be called for. The time has come when some introspection by the Indian media is required. Many people, not only those in authority but even ordinary people, have started saying that the media have become irresponsible and wayward, and need to be reined in. Only a couple of days back I read in the newspapers that the Union government has issued some regulations regarding licences for news channels, to which there was a lot of reaction. Under the Constitution of India, freedom of the media is part of the freedom of speech guaranteed by Article 19 (1) (a). However, no freedom can be absolute, and reasonable restrictions can be placed on it. One of the basic tasks of the media is to provide truthful and objective information to the people that will enable them to form rational opinions, which is a sine qua non in a democracy. But are the Indian media performing this role properly? I may only mention certain defects in the functioning of the India media today. Twisting facts One of the defects is that the media often twist facts. I would like to give an example. One day, a leading English newspaper published on its front page a photograph of Justice Gyan Sudha Misra of the Supreme Court with the caption: Supreme Court Judge says

47

that her daughters are liabilities. This was a distorted and fallacious item of news, published on the front page. Supreme Court Judges have to disclose their assets and liabilities. Against the liabilities column, Justice Misra had written: two daughters to be married. Strictly speaking, it was not necessary to mention this because liabilities mean legal liabilities, for example, housing loan, car loan, and so on. Justice Misra's intention was obviously to say that she would have to spend on her daughters' future marriage. She has three daughters (no son), only one of whom has been married. Justice Misra never said, nor intended to say, that her daughters were liabilities. The news was false and defamatory, with the obvious intention of creating a sensation. Non-issues as real issues A third defect is that the media often portray non-issues as real issues, while the real issues are sidelined. The real issues in India are economic, that is, the terrible economic conditions in which 80 per cent of our people are living, the poverty, unemployment, lack of housing and medical care and so on. Instead of addressing these real issues, the media often try to divert the attention of people to non-issues. Such as that the wife of a film actor has become pregnant, whether she will give birth to a single child or to twins, and so on. Are these the real issues facing the nation? At a Lakme India Fashion Week event, there were 512 accredited journalists covering the event in which models were displaying cotton garments, while the men and women who grew that cotton were killing themselves at a distance of an hour's flight from Nagpur, in the Vidharbha region. Nobody told

48

that story, except one or two journalists, locally. Is this a responsible way for the Indian media to function? Should the media turn a Nelson's eye to the harsh economic realities facing over 75 per cent of our people, and concentrate on some Potemkin villages' where all is glamour and show biz? Are not the Indian media behaving much like Queen Marie Antoinette, who said that if the people had no bread, they should eat cake? No doubt, sometimes the media mention farmers' suicides, the rise in the price of essential commodities, and so on, but such coverage is at most 5 per cent to 10 per cent of the total. The bulk of the coverage goes to showing the life of film stars, pop music, fashion parades, cricket and astrology. Tendency to brand Here is a fourth defect. Bomb blasts have taken place near the Delhi High Court, in Mumbai, Bangalore and so on. Within a few hours of such a bomb blast, many TV channels started showing news items that said that the Indian Mujahideen or the Jaish-e-Mohammed or the Harkatul-Jihad-e-Islam had sent e-mails or text messages claiming responsibility. The names of such alleged organisations will always be Muslim ones. Now, an e-mail can be sent by any mischievous person, but by showing this on TV channels and the next day in the newspapers, the tendency is to brand all Muslims as terrorists and bomb-throwers. The truth is that 99 per cent of the people of all communities, whether Hindu, Muslim, Christian or Sikh, and of whatever caste or region, are good. But the manner in which such news is shown on TV screens and published in newspapers tends to

49

create the impression that all Muslims are terrorists, and evil which is totally false. The person who sends such e-mails or text messages obviously wants to create hatred between Hindus and Muslims, which is the old British divide-and-rule policy continuing even today. Should the media, wittingly or unwittingly, become part of this policy of divide-and-rule? No doubt there are defects not only in the media but in other institutions also, for example, the judiciary, the bureaucracy, and so on. There are two ways to remove these defects in the media. One is the democratic way, that is, through discussions, consultations and persuasion which is the method I prefer. The other way is by using harsh measures against the media, for example, by imposing heavy fines on defaulters, stopping government advertisements to them, suspending their licences, and so on. In a democracy we should first try the first method to rectify the defects through the democratic method. For this purpose, I have decided to have regular get-togethers with the media, including the electronic media, so that we can all introspect and ourselves find out ways and means to rectify the defects in the media, rather than this being done by some government authority or external agency. I propose to have such get-togethers once every two or three months, at which we will discuss issues relating to the media and try to think of how we can improve the performance of the media so that it may win the respect and confidence of the people.

50

If the media prove incorrigible, harsh measures may be required. But in my opinion, that should be done only as a last resort and in extreme situations. Ordinarily, we should first try to resolve issues through discussion, consultation and self-regulation. That is the approach which should be first tried in a democracy. I, therefore, request the Union government to defer the implementation of its recent decision regarding news channel licences, so that we can ourselves discuss the issue thoroughly, and ourselves take corrective measures. Till now the function of the Press Council was only adjudication. I intend to make the Press Council an instrument of mediation in addition, which is in my opinion the democratic approach. For this purpose, I need help, cooperation and advice from the media. India is passing through a transitional period in its history, from a feudal agricultural society to a modern industrial society. This is a very painful and agonising period. The media must help society in going through this transitional period as quickly as possible, and by reducing the pain involved. This they can do by attacking feudal ideas, for example, casteism and communalism, and promoting modern scientific ideas.
