PECON Transformer Temperature Controller Type Tr-7550 is a precision controller designed for protection of large oil cooled power transformers. Winding temperature monitoring of power transformer is extremely critical as it relates to the safe and reliable operation of the transformer. Timely detection of excess temperature of windings can avoid breakdowns and disastrous situations. The controller is suitable for control room as well as for marshalling box application and is built for long and troublefree operation under extreme conditions of service associated with transformer equipment. The operating specified as 0 - 50 condensing). PRINCIPLE: Due to high voltages associated with the windings and due to insulation considerations, direct access to the windings for installing the temperature sensor is not possible. Therefore, indirect means of estimating this temperature has to be done. One of the most reliable methods for this is "Image" formation wherein a thermal replica of the winding is created by actually heating a temperature sensor by a current proportional to the transformer current and then providing some appropriate adjustments so that the exact thermal replica of the winding is realized. The RTD sensor installed on the top of a transformer measures "Top Oil" temperature. The current from the C.T. installed in the L.V. winding of the transformer is fed to the thermal replica device installed inside the controller. The winding temperature of the transformer is calculated based on Top Oil Temperature, C.T. current and dT setting made on the controller. DISPLAYS Two digital displays are provided to show Oil and Winding temperatures of the transformer simultaneously. The resolution of display is 1 oC and the display range is 0-199 oC. Accuracy of indication of oil temperature is 2oC and that of winding temperature is 3oC. In addition, the winding temperature display is used to show the set points with the help of the selector switch. It is also be used to display the maximum winding temperature by pressing the "Max. Wndg. Temp." push-button.

SWITCHING The controller has six in-built electromagnetic power switches to provide cooler control and alarm and trip functions. These switches are highly dependable and are suitable for normal control duty. The switch contacts are normally open potential free type and are brought out on terminal strip for external connections. Operation of these switches is indicated by LED lamp indications. Because of electronic based design, full flexibility is available to adjust these switch operations at any temperature level over entire range of temperature indication. A selector switch permits the viewing of set points one at a time on the display for Winding temperature indication. With the help of a simple screwdriver, user can set the switch operating set point to any desired level over the entire range of 0-199 oC. Turning the screw clockwise will increase the set point level and this can be viewed on the display by taking selector switch to the corresponding setpoint position. During normal use, the selector switch should be left on position marked "W.Temp. Dead band of 8 -10 oC is kept for Coolant I & II, and 3 to 5 oC for alarms & trips. Over and above this, timer circuits are provided in the operation of switch contacts to avoid unnecessary and false triggering of switches due to unpredictable transients. This time-delay is usually about 5 to 8 seconds and ensures safe and reliable operation of the switches. The unit also ensures that the trip signal doesn't come up in case of RTD signal wires opening or shorting. A separate indicating lamp RTD-O indicates if sensor is open. The switch contacts are rated for 5A at 230VAC (resistive load), 0.5A at 220VDC (with L/R of 0.8 msecs.). MOUNTING The controller is projection-mounting type and is designed for mounting inside marshalling box or in control room using 3 nos. M6 screws. It is to be mounted vertically, using anti-vibration mounting grommets provided with the controller. The enclosure is sheet steel duly painted weatherproof type (IP52) and due to static and low power circuitry, needs no breather or air ventilation.

ambient conditions are C and 0-90% R.H. (non-

RTD MOUNTING Temperature sensor type S-05 (Rtd Pt-100) is housed in SS-304 tube with weatherproof terminal head for making electrical connections. It is provided with 1/2" BSP connection for fixing it on top plate of the transformer. A suitable pocket is to be provided for this on the top-plate of the transformer with provision to accept these 1/2" BSP threads. It is recommended to provide the pocket to facilitate removing of RTD in case of damage/replacement. CONNECTIONS The equipment needs auxiliary power for the operation of electronic circuits. Standard models are available with supply voltage specifications as 110 / 240 VAC 15%; 50Hz 5% 20 50 V AC/DC. 90 270 V AC/DC.

RWTI-500 (96 x 96mm) is a digital indicator suitable for panel mounting in control room. This is to be connected to TR-7550 using standard four-core 2.5 mm2 copper cable to receive remote indication signals. Due to electrical signaling, there is no constraint on location and the distance between TR-7550 and RWTI-500. This distance can be few hundred meters. RWTI-500 is supplied optionally on demand. While ordering specify available auxiliary supply THERMAL REPLICA DEVICE Thermal replica device is a specially designed circuitry to simulate the transformer winding under load. There is a heater coil and a temperature sensor. The heater coil is fed with a current from the C.T. installed in L.V. winding of the transformer. If not specified, standard calibration is with 2 Amps. C.T. secondary current corresponding to full load current rating of the transformer. The max. permissible current through heater coil is 300% for 1 minute. Response time of the thermal replica device is adjusted slow enough to approximate the temperature response of a winding of the transformer. The C.T. required is of max. 5VA burden. Temperature gradient of winding hot spot temperature over top oil temperature (dT OC) can be set by the transformer manufacturer at his works after due consideration to design data and actual temperature rise measured after heat run test. This gradient can be adjusted upto 30 OC. ELECTRICAL Tr-7550 consumes 15 VA (Max.) of power. The insulation is better than 100 MOhms at 500 VDC between any terminal and earth and the controller shall withstand 2KV for 1 minute between relay & supply terminals shorted together and earth. ORDERING Please confirm and specify the following at the time of ordering. The values in bracket indicate the standard available specification in absence of any specific demand. Auxiliary supply voltage (110 / 240 VAC) C.T. Secondary current (2 Amps.) dT Setting ( 15 OC ) This is a default setting, and customer can change it to desired value over 0-30 OC range. Requirement of RWTI-500 (Not supplied)

Terminals for auxiliary power, RTD sensor connection, C.T. connections and switch connections are brought out on the terminal strip. This terminal strip is accessible on opening the front cover. Closed rubber grommets are provided at the bottom of the equipment for taking field cables in, for termination on this terminal strip. Terminations are cage type screw terminals suitable for 1 x 2.5 mm2 wires. Connections from RTD (Mounted on top of the transformer) are brought to the controller using standard 3 core copper cable preferably of 2.5 mm2 size. After making the necessary connections, the cover should be closed. MAXIMUM WINDING TEMP. DISPLAY Maximum temperature indicating circuit is also of electronic type. It memorizes maximum temperature reached by the winding and displays that on the digital display marked "Winding Temperature" when "MAX. WNDG. TEMP." pushbutton is pressed. Pressing RESET push button will clear this memory. The accuracy of max. winding temp. indication is 3 oC. REMOTE INDICATION For remote indication of oil and winding temperature, two analog 4-20mA signals are provided. (Max. load 250 ohms.). Linearity of these signals is within 0.5% of f.s. These signals are to be connected to RWTI-500 for remote indication of these parameters.
