QLE AWARDS

QLE AWARDS : The point is the music

By Pam Pastor

IT was an awards night unlike any other.

First, no one dressed up. Second, there were no nominees, just winners. Third, most categories had three winners. Fourth, the
trophies were strange, very strange—a toy car, a T-shirt keychain, a toy school bus, trains. But they were symbolic.

It all began at a party, when Quark Henares, Luis Katigbak and Erwin Romulo talked about people in the local music industry who
are talented and yet have been overlooked by the NU Rock Awards.

That night, the QLE Awards was born.

That conversation turned into articles published in major dailies, blog fodder and countless other conversations over beer and bar
chow.

People started asking when the awards night would be—even when Quark, Luis and Erwin weren’t really planning on holding an
event.

Not a surprise

Soon, it became clear that the QLE awards should be more than just words printed on paper and kilobytes in cyberspace. Rock Ed’s
Gang Badoy stepped in.

It was not a surprise. After all, Rock Ed has always been a champion of the local music scene.

“I always think any celebration that recognizes the musicians who make our generation so interesting and relevant is worth the
effort,” she said.

Enter Route 196, a bar in Katipunan that has become home of sorts to a number of the country’s best bands and emerging talents. It
became the venue of the first QLE Awards.

One night last week, Quark, Luis, Erwin, Gang and a number of musicians gathered to honor some of the musical acts that have
made an impact on audiences and the music scene in the past year.

Quark, Luis and Erwin weren’t the only ones there to present the awards. Revolver’s Cris Ramos and Sweet Spot’s Paul Pajo
presented the Comeback of the Year award. Award-winning horror story writer Yvette Tan presented the Best Live Act award,
graphic novelist Arnold Arre and award-winning graphic designer Cynthia Bauzon presented the Album Packaging of the Year
award.

Filmmaker Kidlat de Guia took a break from filming the event to present the Video of the Year award.

Model Shawn Yao and athlete Kat Velayo accepted Video of the Year for Pedicab’s “Ang Pusa Mo.”

The event was on live webcast on the band Drip’s website (dripmanila.multiply.com) and the Sweetspotmusic channel on
Stickam.com.

Family affair

Because vocalist Sarah Marco was still battling Wednesday night traffic, Quark stepped in and sang Weeknight Memoir in High
Definition with Taken By Cars, mimicking even Sarah’s moves onstage.

Quark said, “It was fun! What was great about it is that it was a very small family affair. Very intimate, like a Christmas party of sorts.
And the winners actually came and gave speeches! Of course, my favorite part was singing my Song of the Year with my choice of
the Best New Artist. I have a band called Failures with Benny Siopao and Kong of Taken By Cars, so it was nice to be jamming with
my bandmates, except this time it was with my favorite band.”

Itchyworms was declared one of the Best Live Acts, but their frontman Jugs Jugueta made an announcement right before his band
started playing, “Para sa akin ang winner this year Eraserheads.”

You will not see winners declaring other winners in any other awards show—only at QLE.

Jugs said, “What the QLE did was give the music fans the power to voice their own opinions. I still maintain that the Eraserheads is
2008’s artist of the year for me. Thank you QLE for empowering me!”

Winners of the Album of the Year award were awarded with albums of other bands. Again, only at QLE.

It was an awards night unlike any other. There were no fireworks, no special effects, not much money spent, no gift bags, no red
carpet, no lavishness. And why should there be?

The point is the music and that night, the music was alive.
