Catalog description: Current and voltage transformers and protection. Relays. Circuits breakers and fuses. Data transmission( briefly). Project. Credit hours: 3 credits Required or elective: Technical elective for CCE / ECE students Prerequisites: By course: EECE 370, By topic: None Textbook(s) and/or required materials: Power system relaying. Horowitz & Phadke. (2nd Ed.) J. Wiley, 1995. High Voltage Engineering and Testing. Ryan (2nd Ed.) I.E.E. (UK) 2001. References: None Computer usage: None Course Objectives The objectives of this course are to: Introduce students to power system protection and switchgear. Teach students theory and applications of the main components used in power system protection. Teach students the protection systems used for electric machines, transformers, bus bars, overhead and underground feeders. Teach students the theory, construction, and applications of main types circuit breakers. Develop in students an ability and skill to design the feasible protection systems needed for each main part of a power system. Enhance students knowledge of over- voltage protection and data transmission. Cultivate students spirit of teamwork, analysis of problems, and synthesis of optimal design for protection systems. (Students work in teams chosen by the instructor of the course to foster interaction skills and communication). Course Topics No. Subjects covered 1 Current and voltage transformer theories, construction, and applications. 2 Electro-mechanical relays: attracted armature, induction, thermal, permanentmagnet moving coil, theories, constructions, and applications. 3 Solid state relays: timers, level detectors, amplitude and phase comparators theory and applications. 4 Numeric relays: components, circuits, applications. Analogue to digital converter (ADC), digital to analogue converter (DAC), memories. 5 Protection systems for electric machines, transformers, bus bars, overhead and underground transmission lines. 6 Over- voltage protection system. 7 Data Transmission briefly 8 Design project for protection systems for one of the main elements of a power system. 9 Circuit breakers (oil, air, SF6, Vacuum): construction, theory of operation, and applications.
