Sheet Offset Printing

Tips for FPG grades

Pre-Press Handing
The top and bottom YUPO sheet which have been kept contact with the cardboard packing sheet of each pack should be discardred. Wrapped YUPO should be brought into press room at least one day before printing in order to aclimatise to the press room temperature and avoid moisture condensation.

Delivery (Avoiding Set-off)

Spray powder should be used and it should be of the hydrophilic type(i.e.having an affinity for water, but not soluble). Soluble or water -repellent powders are not suitable. Powder should be used 30-50 % more than amount used on coated papers. The particlesize of 10-20 microns of the powder is recommended. It is suggested 1) Sheets should be racked in piles of 5001,000 sheets. 2) Air-pressure and jogging should be reduced to a minimum. 3) Sheets should not be subjected to impacts or shocks. 4) Humidity at delivery should be kept over 50% at least to avoid static problem.

Press Room Condition

The relative humidity at the machine should be maintained at not less than 50 % to minimize electrostatic problem.

Drying
As YUPO is not absorbent, drying will take longer than with paper. Typical drying times 1 color 6 8 hours 2 color 7 10 hours 4 color 10 16 hours

Printing Conditions
Feeder Unwrapped YUPO sheets should be fanned before stacking to ensure smooth feeding. Folding is prohibited. The stacking should not be loaded more than 5,000 sheets at one time. Abrasions and Marks The followings are recommended: To avoid sucker marks, minimize the suction pressure and/or cover the rubber part of the sucker with cloth tape. To avoid wheels and brush marks, move them away from the image area or cover them with either PP tape or cloth tape. Plates Pre-sensitized (PS) Plates are recommended. Press Setting Printing pressure should be maintained as same as natural pulp based papers. The blanket will sometimes show whitening which comes from the inorganic fillers in YUPO and normally has no effect on print quality. A blanket wash-up is necessary only when the build -up affects print quality.
You can reduce the paper dusting problem significantly by usingSUPERYUPO

Inks
Inks must be specially formulated for YUPO Synthetic Papers and consist of 100 % solids, contain less than 3 % mineral oil, and dry by oxidation. Major ink manufacturers have tested YUPO and most have a suitable ink. Please consult with your ink manufacturer.

Other Printing Methods

Although most of the conventional printing processes available can be used for printing on YUPO , we recommend you to perform preliminary tests before use. Conventional Sheet-Fed Offset, Rotogravure, Silk Screen, Business Form and Rotary Letterpress are most commonly used for printing on YUPO.

Sheet Offset Printing

Tips for SUPERYUPO (FRB/FRR)

Offset Printing
Sheet characteristics Can use ordinary inks. Extremely fast ink drying. Excellent dot reproduction and fine glossy finish. Specialized for one-sided printing. The side when opened (glossy side) is the printing side. Cautions See aboveSheet Offset Printing Tips for FPG grades for cautions regarding basic printing operation. Printing inks FRBUse standard inks. FRRChoose inks according to the ink coverage for the job. When printing with up to 400% ink coverage Use low solvent inks (inks for special papers, etc.)

When printing with up to 200% ink coverage Standard inks can be used. Use inks suited to your performance requirements for durability, etc. Key points Dampening water adjustments: Restrict dampening water as much as possible to the point just before the plates are affected by scumming. Do this particularly for the first cylinder. Inks that require caution Inks that set quickly High tack inks (especially in winter)

Screen Printing
Cautions for printing The same inks are used as for YUPO FPG, but be sure to consult your ink supplier first.

Sheet Offset Printing

Tips for ULTRAYUPO (FEB)

Offset Printing
Sheet characteristics Use YUPO formulated inks or synthetic paper inks. Ink drying is faster than FPG. Dot reproduction and dot gain characteristics are better than FPG. Excellent glossy finish. Cautions See avobe Sheet Offset Printing Tips for FPG grades for cautions regarding basic printing operations. See theULTRAYUPO (FEB) catalog for a summary of grades. Printing inks Use YUPO inks or synthetic paper inks. Drying times 100% ink coverage: 1 to 2 hours 200% ink coverage: 2 to 3 hours 300% ink coverage: 3 to 5 hours 400% ink coverage: 5 to 7 hours

Key points Dampening water adjustmentsRestrict dampening water as much as possible to the point just before the plates are affected by scumming. Do this particularly for the first cylinder. Caution about ink tack in cold seasons Lower the ink tack for cold inks. Amount of powderThis paper has improved setoff properties compared to FPG, but slightly more powder should be used than for coated papers. Delivery pile boardsSuitability is about the same or slightly better than for FPG. Two-sided printingPrint the side with the heaviest ink coverage first, then print the other side soon (within 24 hours) after drying.

Screen Printing
Cautions for printing The same inks are used as for YUPO FPG, but be sure to consult your ink supplier first.

Finishing & Disposal

Post-press
Binding
Adhesive binding 1) Perform deeperroughingthan that for paper. 2) EVA hot melt is suitable as an adhesive. If the temperature of the hot melt is too high, YUPO may be affected by distortion, so use a setting of around180 C. Notch binding burst binding very suitable is Ultrasonic sealin Used for jobs with few pages (Up to approx. 16P at 200m). Loose leaf Spiral wire binding Saddle stitching Cautions concerning binding Avoid using YUPO as a cover sheet or an inserted page if it is to be bound together with ordinary papers as curling or distortion can occur.

Binding

Grain direction Wet Lamination Dry Lamination

Align grain direction parallel to vertical as for ordinary papers.

Laminating

Emulsion adhesive of Vinyl Acetate type or EVA type. Solvent type adhesive or Reactive Adhesive.

Trimming

Guillotining

1. Always use a sharp blade. 3. Pile height of 15cm maximum is recommended. 2. Expel air from between the sheets. 4. For YUPO,keep the pile below 10cm.

Die Cutting Drilling

Corners should be round. Sharp corners could start a tear.

1. 2. 3. 4.

Sharp drill should be used. The maximum thickness of the pile is recommended to be 25mm. The intervals should be taken longer for drill to cool down. Make sure to bleed the air out sufficiently before drilling.

Folding

1. YUPO is easily folded along the grain direction. 2. FPG95 is the most suitable grade for folding among YUPO grades. 3. Setting the Folding Machine. 1) Roll pressure should be set at the maximum. 2) Roll pressure should be set balanced evenly at both ends of a roll. 3) YUPO should be exactly fed at right angle.

Perforating

Perforation can run either with or across the grain, but its tearing characteristics will differ so adjustments to the blade is necessary. Across Grain DirectionBelow 0.5mm CUT2 3mm With Grain DirectionBelow 0.8 1.0mm CUT2 3mm

Disposing of YUPO
Post-press
Disposing and recycling

YUPO is an environmentally friendly material and can be safely incinerated

When disposing of YUPO as ordinary household waste, be sure to follow the applicable local regulations for disposing of plastics. When processing YUPO as office waste, be sure to process it as an industrial waste. When disposing of large amounts of YUPO , the following reuses are possible. Reuse as a solid fuel YUPO to be disposed of such as used pamphlets and the like can be reused as a resource for thermal energy as a recycled plastic fuel (RPF). The polypropylene resin used as a raw material for YUPO consists of carbon and hydrogen, so when incinerated with sufficient oxygen it becomes c a r b o n g a s C O 2 a n d w a t e r H 2O w i t h o u t producing any chlorine gases or nitrogen oxide. Reuse as a recycled resin Collected waste sheets and cutoffs can be reused as a raw material for recycled resin products such as flowerpots, seedling trays, and stakes.
