Native American
Modernism
Art from North America
Peter Bolz and Viola König

Revealing a distinct modernism in North American

art, this catalog focuses on the creativity of its Na-
tive American population, highlighting for the first
time the extensive collection in Berlin’s Ethnological
Museum. Ranging from the 1970s to the present, it
traces the historical development of modern Native
American art up to 1962, when the Institute of
American Indian Arts was founded in Santa Fe, New
Mexico. A detailed compilation of statements from
Native American artists, renowned art historians,
critics, and curators is featured, summarizing the
North American perspective on the subject. Topics
such as cultural self-determination and Native
American involvement in World War II are ad-
dressed, and a chronicle of the important mile-
stones in modern Native American art, detailed
artist biographies, and a list of works on exhibit are
1
also included.

Peter Bolz is the curator at the Ethnological Museum

in Berlin. Viola König is the director of the Ethno-

The Hand
in Morocco
Hamsa, Art, Symbol
and Tradition
Khalid El Gharib

Going beyond primitive superstitions and the

many expressions of identity, this collection of-
fers the first artistic and aesthetic anthology
regarding representations of the hand and of
the esoteric marks that past civilizations have
left on these representations. The featured
items originate from all of Morocco’s cultural
spheres: jewels forged from fine metal, printed
matter, lamps, ex-votos, clothes, weaves,
pieces of embroidery, manuscripts, and the
numerous functional objects used in everyday
life as well as on special occasions. Taking a
sensitive look at Muslim and Jewish craftsmen
and goldsmiths, this guide demonstrates how,
through the creation of these objects, they
2 have invented an identity which still nurtures
Moroccan arts today.

Khalid El Gharib is a specialist in Moroccan

pottery and urban jewelry.

Artsakh
Garden of Armenian Arts
and Traditions
Dickran Kouymjian and Claude Mutafian

Delving into a former eastern outpost in Arme-

nia throughout antiquity and during the Mid-
dle Ages, this history explores the fascinating,
mountainous province of Artsakh. The region
adopted Christianity very early on, profoundly
marking its destiny and shaping the main
features of its heritage in the architecture of
cross-stone carving, the art of illumination,
and the craft of carpet-making. Artsakh
remained virtually independent until the
mid-18th century, when Tatar Khan succeeded
in establishing his sovereignty before being
annexed to the Russian Empire at the very
beginning of the 19th century. Presenting an
intriguing synthesis of this region’s complex
past, this narrative also captures the collapse
of Tsarist Russia, the Soviet 1921 allocation of
Karabagh to the shores of the Caspian Sea, and 3
the Armenian people’s eventual proclamation
of independence in 1991. This edition is
written in English and French.

Dickran Kouymjian is a professor emeritus at

California State University–Fresno. Claude
Mutafian is a mathematics teacher and
a historian.

The Bloemaert Effect
Colour and Composition in the
Golden Age
Edited by Liesbeth M. Helmus and Gero Seelig

Celebrating the father of the Utrecht School, this

record delves into the life of the extraordinary
Dutch painter Abraham Bloemaert. A concise
biography illustrates how he formed and experi-
enced at least three important styles of art in his
time: mannerism, Caravaggism, and classicism,
producing works in nearly all possible genres. A
presentation of this obscure artist’s accomplish-
ments in a fantastic exhibition, this work demon-
strates why Bloemaert had such a wide influence
on painting in the northern Netherlands of the 17th
century. Exploring his role as a teacher in addition
to his exceptional talent for drawing, this book also
examines the Utrecht specialty of painting cycles as
well as specific pieces by Bloemaert, such as his
altarpieces, religious and mythological works, genre
scenes, landscapes, and still lifes.

André Charles Boulle
1642–1732
A New Style for Europe
Jean-Dominique Augard, Peter Hughes, Tamara Rappe,
Jean-Nérée Ronfort, and Ulrich Schneider

One of the 17th century’s most influential craftsmen is

showcased in this monograph, highlighting the work
of André Charles Boulle. The study reveals how the
man renowned as the preeminent artist of mar-
quetry—the art of applying pieces of veneer to fashion
decorative patterns—gave birth to a new aesthetic
through his chosen medium. Boulle’s level of refine-
ment is illustrated, portraying an execution that was
unique in his time, earning him the title of Ebéniste
Ciseleur et Marqueteur du Roi—Cabinetmaker, Carver,
and Marqueter King—as well as the envy of crowned
heads, princes, and rich collectors throughout Europe.
The artist’s innovative genius in spatial conception,
rare and pioneering mastery of gilt bronze, and
marquetry using the rarest materials are all celebrated
in detail. Recollecting the century of Louis XIV and
7
Peter the Great, this history reflects on the genesis of
many attributes of modernity that were to flourish in
later years.

Jean-Dominique Augard is a historian. Peter Hughes

is chief curator of the Wallace Collection in London.
Tamara Rappe is the director of the European decora-
tive arts department at the State Hermitage Museum
in St. Petersburg. Jean-Nérée Ronfort is a specialist in

Robert Combas
Richard Leydier

Providing the first-ever companion to the

famed exhibition, this multifaceted catalog
reflects the achievements of French painter
and sculptor Robert Combas. At once chrono-
logical and thematic, the study dives
headfirst into the artist’s universe, journeying

Staging Desires
Kusakabe Kimbei’s Meiji Femininity
Mio Wakita

Closely examining staged images of Japanese femininity,

this study centers on the mid-Meiji souvenir photography
of Kusakabe Kimbei, approaching from the artist’s perspec-
tive while referencing his culture’s visual and traditional
practices. The analysis attempts to construe visual material
in its original context using various points of departure,
including the sociocultural significance of the staged
models, the visual display of the photographic models in
relation to the visibility problem of Japanese women in
Meiji visual media, and Kimbei’s visual encodings of
Japanese femininity. By means of contextualized analysis,
this survey seeks to illuminate the intricate structure of
significations embedded on the visual plane, ultimately
demonstrating how Kimbei’s female images present a
locus of multilayered meanings.

Mio Wakita is a specialist in the art and visual culture of

modern Japan. He received his PhD from Heidelberg
University in Japanese art history in 2010.
