AFZP-VSS-MED , 2012 MEMORANDUM FOR SUBJECT: Duty description and Responsibilities

1. PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this memorandum is to develop you professionally, improve your performance and establish goals and standards of what is expected from you, The Noncommissioned Officer. The highest standards of excellence and commitment we demand of our soldiers or those that we have an impact on daily. We must not only insist on the achievement of the Army standards but we must also attain and exceed them. My guidance is intended to ensure that you are challenged, receive good and rigorous training, and that you are treated with dignity and respect as an adult; while holding you to a high standard. By doing this, it will increase the quality of your performance and further professionally develop you as a Noncommissioned Officer. 2. DUTY TITLE: Squad Leader 3. DAILY DUTY AND SCOPE: Serves as a Biomedical Sergeant for a Rapid Deployable Support Battalion, in the 3rd Infantry Division; Provides training, accountability, and is responsible for the morale, training, discipline, health and welfare of two Soldiers; responsible for the operation and maintenance of one M998 A. RATING SCHEME: RATER: SENIOR RATER: REVIEWER: Initials: ______ 4. Our goal is to further develop motivated, disciplined, and physically fit Soldiers, who will be effective combat multipliers; with the ability to shoot, move and communicate

while accomplishing the mission. Whether its a Major Theater War, Low Intensity Conflict, or a Peace Enforcement Operation; it could also be in support of Humanitarian or Non-Combatant evacuation operations. We use every opportunity to reinforce high standards of performance and positive leadership. It is through this process that an individual gains the degree of confidence, self-discipline, commitment, and technical and physical competence required to make a contribution to the Armys mission. SUBJECT: Duty Description and Responsibilities 5. VALUES: Values are what Soldiers, as a profession, judge to be right; they are the moral, ethical, and professional attribute of character. They are the heart and soul of the Army. Here is a quote from FM 6-22 about demonstration of our character by behavior. One of our responsibilities as a leader is to teach Army Values to our subordinates. The old saying, actions speak louder than words have never been truer then here. Leaders, who talk about honor, loyalty and selfless service but do not live these values, both on and off duty, send the wrong message. a. b. c. d. e. f. Meet challenges without compromising integrity. Personal conduct, both on and off duty. Obey lawful orders and do what is right without orders. Choose the hard right over the easy wrong. Exhibit pride in the unit, be a team player. Demonstrate respect for all Soldiers regardless of race, color, sex, or religion.

6. COMPETENCE: The knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to be an expert in your current duty assignment and to perform adequately in other assignments. This includes sound judgment, ability to weigh alternatives, form objectives and make good decisions. Learn, grow, enforce standards, create and innovate, take prudent risks, never settle for less than the best. BE COMMITTED TO EXCELLENCE. a. Accomplish completely and promptly those tasks assigned or required by duty position. b. Constantly seek ways to learn, grow and improve. c. Dont be afraid of change. 7. PHYSICAL FITNESS & MILITARY BEARING: Physical fitness is the physical and mental ability to accomplish the mission. It involves strength, endurance, stamina, flexibility, speed, agility, coordination and balance. We as NCOs are responsible for our own fitness, and those assigned to work for us. a. Daily Physical Fitness:

1. PT will be conducted Monday thru Friday (except Thursdays for Sergeants Time Training) from 0630-0730. For some people this might seem like a limited amount but PT can be done before and after hours as well, and can be made into a routine when properly planned. b. Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT): TC 3-22.20 1. You are responsible for the preparation for you for the Army Physical fitness Test. 2. Prepare for the APFT within the limitations of a profile and the events that you will be conducting. 3. Soldiers who fail the APFT will be enrolled in the Special Population PT Program. SUBJECT: Duty Description and Responsibilities c. Height and Weight assessments: AR 600-9 1. Height and weight assessments will be administered to ensure that all Soldiers and NCOs are in compliance with AR 600-9. Initials: _________ 8. LEADERSHIP: Leadership is influencing others by providing purpose, direction and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization. I expect you to not only lead by words, but by actions that you demonstrate and exhibit to others. a. Motivate Soldiers to perform to the best of their ability as individuals and together as a disciplined cohesive team to accomplish the mission. b. Instill the spirit to achieve and win. c. Develop and enforce discipline. d. Set the example of BE, KNOW, and DO. 1. Be technically and tactically proficient. 2. Know yourself and seek self-improvement. 3. Do the right thing both on and off duty, not only when you are being watched. Initials: ________ 9. TRAINING:

Preparing for duty performance, teaching of skills and knowledge; quality training bonds units and leads directly to good discipline and a high state of moral in the organization. a. All Soldiers will be trained on the operation and maintenance (with TM) requirements of all assigned equipment that you assessed they are not familiar with, such as: 1. Weapon systems (familiarization, qualification, maintenance, etc) 2. Vehicles (PMCS, license) 3. NBC (NBC Chamber/NBC Battle run) 4. Communications equipment 5. Field Life support systems (camouflage Nets, Tent-age, TOC set up, etc). b. Common Task Testing: first line supervisors will conduct training on all common tasks throughout the year and keep track of the training. Initials: _______ 10. RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY: All Soldiers must use proper care, maintenance, handling, and conservation of personnel, equipment, supplies, property, and funds. This is achieved through inspecting Soldiers and equipment often. You will be held responsible for your actions and accountable for the equipment you use. Make sure your weapons, equipment, and any vehicles you are responsible for are serviceable, maintained, clean and ready to assist you in accomplishing the mission. b. Prevent waste of supplies and misuse of equipment. c. be responsible for your actions and those of your subordinates. d. Keep the chain of command informed. Initials: ________ 11. AWARDS: Awards that are initiated must have a DA Form 638 and a completed Home Town News Release Form. They will be submitted to the S-1 according to the prescribed time line listed below. 12. COUNSELINGS: All subordinates will be counseled monthly. The counseling will be narrative and not completely bulleted. All NCOs will be counseled every quarter on a DA 2166-8-1. I highly recommend NCOs to be counseled monthly on a DA 4856 with a working DA 2166-8 attached. 13. APPOINTMENTS: Schedule appointments to avoid conflicts with duty schedule. All Appointments will have a slip stating time and date if this becomes an issue with a Soldier. There will be no appointments during Motor-pool maintenance on Mondays and on Thursdays during SGTs time training. 14. ADDITIONAL DUTIES: N/A
