1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Sleep deprivation in teenagers is on rise these days.

The amount of extra activities such as surfing Internet, watching television, homework and sending text messages can create serious health consequences causing sleep disturbances. A research report such as this may give awareness to the teens about the importance of sleep.

1.2 Statement of the Problem Due to sleep deprivation, most students often oversleep and have to drag themselves out of bed every morning. They have trouble concentrating and often fall asleep in class. They also have a hard time staying motivated to do their class work. As a result, their studies are affected and their results deteriorate.

1.3 Objective(s) of the Study 1.3.1 1.3.2 1.3.3 To study the amount of sleep teenagers get To investigate the reasons for sleep deprivation To study the relationship between sleep deprivation and academic performance of teenagers

1.5

Scope of the Study 1.5.1 The research was done on students from Form 1 to Upper 6 of SMK

Abdul Rahman Talib 1.5.2 There were 200 participants comprising of 100 male and 100 female students

1.6 Significance of the Study This study helped to demonstrate the importance of sleep to students. The students will be more aware of the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation, and thus, are less likely to deprive themselves of their much needed sleep. Students will also be more motivated to use their time wisely to avoid depriving themselves of their sleep. When they have had sufficient sleep, students will be able to pay more attention in class and concentrate on their lessons, thus promoting a better study environment and an assurance of much better results.
