Waitrose plans move a step closer LONG-AWAITED plans for a new Waitrose store in Boughton have been submitted to Cheshire West and Chester Council. The supermarket will be built on the site of Boughton Retail Centre. A hotel and restaurant is also planned for the former Boughton St Pauls School and a new footbridge will link it to new homes at the Shot Tower and Leadworks on the Hoole side of the canal. CRIMEFILE RECENT crimes reported in this area include the following: l Ethelda Drive A thief climbed onto a conservatory roof and into an open bedroom window before stealing a laptop computer. l Hoole Road A thief used a fire escape to gain access to a top floor flat and stole a Samsung DVD player. l Elmwood Avenue - A handbag was stolen from the front seat of a car. l Hoole Road A blackTrek Fuel X8 mountain bike was taken from a back garden shed. l Sandileigh - Two mountain bikes were stolen after thieves broke in through a wooden garage door. One bike was recovered on Hoole Road, the other, a Orange Marin Nailtrail mountain bike, is still missing. Cycle ride in memory of tragic Michael CYCLISTS have raised well over 1,500 in memory of Hoole schoolboy Michael Hayward, who tragically died from a brain tumour. Family and friends cycled 100 miles around Cheshire in aid of the Michael Hayward Whatever Appeal which supports research into the effect of treatment on children. Michael, who lived in Hamilton Street, died eight years after a large tumour was removed from his brain. The surgery and subsequent chemotherapy left him with a number of problems, which his parents Debra and Phil are keen to highlight. Charity football match A FOOTBALL match was played last month in memory of Danny Lunt, who was found dead at Hoole Bridge Building Supplies in March. Friends arranged the game at Chesters stadium on Bumpers Lane to raise funds for the Campaign Against Living Miserably charity.

Volunteers make a big splash to tidy up Hooles greenway

IT has been a particularly busy time for Friends of the Millennium Greenway, writes Audrey Hodgkinson, group founder. With much to accomplish, the volunteers worked on three days, if they were free to do so, hedging and further fencing their main priority. The pond project has had its problems firstly with drought and then flooding, but I am sure wildlife will cope. The dog splash is overflowing, however this would have been a great deal worse if the splash had not been previously deepened and made larger. We shall tackle the surround and set up the planned overflow system, supervised by the pathway warden, when time and funding is available. Donations payable to Friends of Millennium Greenway and sent to C. Green Waterloo Road, Chester CH2 2AL would help with this. The dogs we saw, whilst walking in the rain on Saturday, were soaking wet but still excitedly leaped into the dog splash, and the more dogs there were the better they liked it. We managed to hold our thank you gathering by the side of the pond on 21st April, a dry morning, Invited local councillors - Hilarie McNae, Bob Thompson, Alex Black and other supporters were present. John Ebo sent his apologies The pond coming along nicely in an area which was he could not attend due to once a dumping ground a prior engagement. We enjoyed chatting whilst light refreshments were provided. The event went off well, with many pedestrians bringing donations of various items, a roll of rabbit wire, wildflower seeds, and various plants. We were thanked and congratulated for the pleasure our various projects had given to so many and for also adding to our growing number of awards. New volunteers were welcomed and as usual we reminded that there is never any obligation placed on our volunteers. Our motto has always been spend as much or little time as you wish assisting us with our tasks. Email Audhodgkinson@aol.com for further details.

Transplant patient Carla urges others to join organ register

CARLA Phillips, from Hoole, is urging people to sign up for organ donor register. Carla has had two new kidneys and is highlighting the fact that there are more than 10,000 people in need of an organ transplant. Carlas kidneys failed as the result of repeated infections as a child. It was a complete shock when doctors told her that her kidneys had been destroyed beyond repair and she would have to start dialysis, to remove the toxins from her blood, aged 19. There is no cure for end stage renal failure, the only hope of a respite from the hard grind of dialysis is a transplant. She went on the waiting list in 1991 and got her transplant in 1992. Carlas first transplant came from a donor who had been involved in a road traffic accident. In their darkest moment of grief and shock, his family had chosen to give others the gift of life. That kidney lasted 15 years and allowed Carla to lead a close to normal life. In 2006 she was told that her kidney function had deteriorated to such a level that she would have to start dialysis again. She moved back to Chester from London to be near her old transplant centre, dragging with her new boyfriend Peter. Carla suffered some setbacks, including the night before her wedding to Peter, leading to her begging doctors to let her out of hospital in order to get to the register office! Peter saved her life after she suffered a brain haemorrhage. However, she was told that because of her high antibody levels the chance of receiving another cadaveric donor kidney was very slim. Peter had offered to be a donor, but he and Carla were different blood types and therefore not a match. The transplant co-ordinator at her hospital suggested they should go in for a paired donation where offered kidneys were matched to other couples in the same situation. Peter would give a kidney to a stranger in return for a kidney for Carla. Peter had his op first, and Carlas kidney arrived later and was successfully transplanted that evening.Carla felt better the moment she woke up, though she concedes that may have been the morphine! She went home 18 days later to start a new life. There have been a couple of hiccups, but none of these minor setbacks have stood in her way. She won a gold medal at the 2011 British Transplant Games, raising over 1200 for charity, she is starting her own business, driving lessons, holidays, more involvement in her hobbies - all these things have only become possible with the increased energy, wellness and positivity that comes with a transplant. Carla says: Bringing a person back from the brink, from misery and very real possibility of death, is a power you hold in the palm of your hand. A two minute form could change up to eight peoples lives. You have nothing to lose, and - because you are much more likely to need an organ than to donate - everything to gain from everyone being on the register. Please sign up today. HOOLE RANGERS FC Rangers punch above their weight to earn top four finish
THE season concluded with Hoole Rangers 1st team finishing in 4th place in the Premier league, which is a much better position than we achieved in the last 3 seasons. We now believe we have a team capable of once again challenging for silverware next year, writes Glyn Roberts In what we had all agreed would be a developing and learning year for the 2nd team, as expected they finished bottom of a very strong Division 1. However, the team started to show signs that the younger players are improving and with a few additions to the squad in the summer, we fully expect more success next season. As this season has now finished, we will be taking a break from training, but will start full pre-season training from July. If any new players want to join the club with a view to playing next season, please contact me on mobile / e-mail below and I will advise how you can get involved.

Hoole Rangers presentation evening followed on from the Fun Day. The winners of the main awards are ( pictured left to right ); Mike Dessington 1st team Committees player of the year, Ian Duffell 2nd team Players player of the year, Neil Cawley Clubman award, Warren Fowles, 1st team Players player of the year and Mark Roberts Clubman award. James Beetham ( not in picture ) won 2nd team Committees player of the year. For more information about Hoole Rangers FC please contact Glyn Roberts Mob: 07515 805966

Fun day was a big success

The Hoole Rangers Fun Day and Charity football match took place on Sunday 6th May. We were very lucky with the weather and the sunshine brought a really good crowd of people to enjoy the many games and activities, which included a coconut shie, football games, face painting, stocks, target golf, throwing the welly competition, plus a craft fair, a Fire Engine from Chester station, and a cafe and barbeque managed by the Live! charity team. The Charity football match featured a Hoole Rangers team, playing against Chester Ladies 1st XI. The game was played in good spirit, the ladies taking no prisoners with some of their tackling, and despite a few very dubious refereeing decisions (thanks Mike), the men eventually ran out 5-2 winners, to become the first winners of the Maxiflow cup. We had two local councillors attending the Fun Day, Bob Thompson and Alex Black, plus we were very lucky to have several ex-Chester FC players from the 60s and 70s; Alan Tarbuck, John Evans, John Butcher, Grenville Millington, Bob Delgado and Gary Talbot. Grenville Millington said a few words at the end of the game, John Butcher presented Cally Reid with the Player of the match award, and Bob Delgado presented the cup to Mike Dessington, Hoole Rangers captain for the day. I would like to thank Maxiflow Ltd. and Coyle Michael Hairdressing for men, who sponsored the Fun Day, the local businesses who paid for advertising space in our free programme, plus all the people who worked so hard to make this a successful event. I am very pleased to report that the overall event raised 461 for the Live! charity.

We supply and install a wide range of electrical goods from LCD and Plasma TVs to major kitchen appliances. Our shop is in the centre of Tarporley high street where we have continued to expand the showroom to accommodate a dedicated SONY and Panasonic home entertainment display, a Bosch and Siemens domestic appliance area, and a fitted kitchen with integrated appliances. We stock many leading brands and offer friendly, honest advice on all of our products. As a member of Euronics, the largest electrical buying group in Europe, we benefit from the heavyweight buying power of over 600 independent Electrical Retailers across the UK. This gives us the ability to offer competitive prices from a wide range of manufacturers while keeping our independence as a local family business. Before and aftersales service has been the foundation of our business for over 30 years.

J.BLAGG & SONS was established in 1981 when Peter and Keith joined their father in the family business retailing Televisions and Electrical Goods. Mr John Blagg originally started in business with his two older brothers in the late 1940s with their ironmongery and electrical shop Blagg Bros on Tarporley high street. With the invention of television becoming available in the 1950s the business developed into a dedicated Radio & Television shop. Generations of local families recall how Blagg Bros supplied the first television they ever owned, and for some the first television they ever watched was set up in the local village halls by Mr Blagg for coverage of the Queens Coronation. The support of the local community is as important to us as ever, having expanded our range of products to most electrical appliances, we are still happy to be known as Blaggs the television shop.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Ive been away. The homeland was calling - although that makes it sound like a gentle voice carried on the breeze when in reality it was a force ten gale down the phone demanding that Id not been home since Christmas and there was a chance that Id be disowned if I didnt put in an appearance soon. So, like the dutiful son I am, I packed up my PJs and headed back to my roots although, it came as a bit of shock spending more than a fleeting weekend where I had grown up. I wanted home to have frozen in time and for the memories to have come flooding back. As I neared the edge of the town the stereo sensed a dramatic window of opportunity and threw out an early 90s ballad. I leaned heavily on wheel and let the music wash over me in what should have been an Oscar worthy performance capturing the melancholy of the moment and although my part was played to perfection, the monumental tear jerker suddenly become the weirdness of the Return to Oz! The town had stopped beating and although frozen, it was not preserved. It was dilapidated. Run down. The Woolworths building was now an everythings a pound shop and even the Wimpy had turned off its ovens and hidden itself away behind white washed glass. Hues had faded in the sun and a dust seemed to settle everywhere. The Emerald City was nothing more than semi-rural run down town centre full of shutters and closing down sales. Although my parents immaculate house, in its Stepford-esque setting, was still warm, welcoming and well received, I could not shake off the sadness of the high street. The heart of the town was in need of CPR and I understood why my parents were so in love with Hoole. It offered everything that their home town lacked. From living with the need to impress my parents I was suddenly aware of the way they were now living through their children. If we were young girls we would probably now be paraded with backcombed hair and ten tonne of make up in sickly sweet beauty pageants professing our love of puppy dogs and world peace. As two 30-something-year-old blokes my Mother had to play a different hand. My brother has the fantastically well paid job in the centre of London and has become a commuter but lives only a stones throw from my parents where as I may not have scored highly on the career section of the game of life I have clocked up all the Brownie points in terms of geographical location. If this was top trumps, my Mother holds quite a good hand. The drive down Faulkner Street on route home from my South East stint needed no melancholic music. The soundtrack and

nostalgia were completely irrelevant. I was home. Home is not just the wallpapered four walls and roof above our heads. Home is everything that surrounds us. Its our backyard, the view from our bedroom window and the sounds of our street. Its the church bells that ring, the blackbirds that sing and the car alarm that adds a slight Dubstep remix to the proceedings. is a great improvement to that of the woman with her mobile phone seemingly stapling her shoulder to the side of her head in one of the neighbouring similar stores so maybe there are lessons to be learned there. #just saying. And its not just the chain stores taking the risks. New independent establishments are popping up like spring bulbs. Brook Street reaches out from Chesters city towards us, paving a pathway of what used to be takeaways, pet groomers and adult shops but now practically glows with a newly refurbished eateries, the fantastically retro Becnicks Wonder Emporium and, taking a leaf out of Becnicks catalogue of historical chic, the Brooklyn Barber Shop who have left no stone unturned in terms of ambience, decor and good old fashioned customer service. And whats interesting is, these independent successes are coming our way. So, when all is said and done, Sainsburys have made a statement about the heart of our Community the future is bright but not just orange. As I write this, the sun has crept out. Its a bit of a novelty right now but after the wet start to the year it encourages growth. With that in mind, I look forward to being a part of Hooles development and sit in the window of the Sticky Walnut watching the heart of Hoole beat strong and defiantly. And the next time London calls, Im ensure to pack my ruby slipper because there is now place like home (repeat three times).

Orange plastic bags

Home is the blossoms, the fresh breads of Baked, the chatter of kids coming home from school and the burnt out wheelie bin that still litters the floor because the council workers who replaced the melted plastic were not briefed that they had to dispose of the old lid. The same mess that the bin men can not clear because it is not placed inside the bin and therefore remains a mass of blue spaghetti that has attracted the company of two white plastic garden chairs and a fridge! Misery does love company. But the heart of Hoole hasnt stopped in its tracks. Its not desperately holding on to something from the past. It is embracing change. I hated the thought of the sea of orange plastic carriers spilling into our streets and assumed the shiny new Sainsburys was going to be our downfall but having been open just over a week, it is as if its always been there. There is no obvious boycott but then again there are no obvious locally sourced products on the shelves so you win some, you lose some. The customer service

JUBILee CeLeBRATION
BY THe Rev ANDY GLOveR O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, we give you thanks for the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth; for her steadfast faith and for her royal service to this nation and all the peoples of the Commonwealth. Bless the food before us and the people beside us; may the sharing of this meal strengthen our communities, and nurture the bonds between us of friendship, hope and trust. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ who reigns as servant of all. Amen

This is a specially written grace thanking God for the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen - and the food to be shared at Jubilee celebrations. Seen by Her Majesty, it will be prayed by millions of people throughout the Commonwealth on Sunday 3rd June, before they share a Big Jubilee Lunch in their communities. As you will be aware the nation will be holding 4 days of celebrations from June 2nd to June 5th to mark the Diamond Jubilee.

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 22 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.

The official emblem for The Queens Diamond Jubilee in 2012 is the winning design following a national competition for children aged between 6 and 14. It was drawn by 10-year-old Katherine Dewar, who is from Chester! Im sure many of you have seen it is available for use for activities associated with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations including community and national events, publications, retail and merchandising. Here in Hoole we are holding our own community event to celebrate The Diamond Jubilee is a unique moment in our countrys history and is important that the local Hoole community has the chance to come together to celebrate. The churches are in an ideal position to help make this happen and we offer this event free of charge. Hoole is a special place and we want to celebrate all that is good and positive about it. So on Sunday 3rd June Hoole Alexandra Park from 11.30am into the afternoon there will be a Community Church Service including a local childrens choir, live music by a Salvation Army band and rousing hymn singing. This will be followed by a picnic in the park and games for the all the family. The four Hoole Churches will host the whole event. Please do consider joining us for this and lets celebrate and give thanks to God for the life and reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. Also to mark this special occasion more than 400,000 copies of a commemorative Diamond Jubilee New Testament have been ordered across the nation and here in Hoole over 350 copies will be given to every family in Hoole Primary School and some to give away at the community celebration, This gift recognises the strong Christian faith that the Queen has and how this faith underpins her life of service and duty to the country.

Wildlife Art comes alive at Gordale

THREE days of inspiring demonstrations by award-winning artists will launch this years National Exhibition of Wildlife Art (NEWA) at the Gordale garden centre on the Wirral.

The UKs most published fine artist, PollyAnna Pickering, will be just one of the stars of NEWAs Wildlife Weekend running from 13th to 15th July. The event will also provide another chance to see contrasting woodcarvers Chris Hindley and Philip Nelson working in tandem, bringing birds to life in wildly differing ways, before your very eyes! Cheshire and North Wales will be further represented by internationally collected artists Claire Shaughnessy and linocut specialist Thelma Sykes. Each day of Wildlife Weekend, will provide a chance to see 3 or 4 talented wildlife artists from all over the Northwest, and beyond, showing and sharing their skills alongside the stunning exhibition itself. Each summer, this delightfully informal exhibition, housed in the natural light of Gordales ephemeral NEWA gallery, provides an experience the whole family can enjoy for free. With its vibrant presentation of almost 400 paintings, drawings and sculptures, the exhibition has regularly drawn over 17,000 visitors, making it Britains largest open, selling exhibition of wildlife art. This years show runs from July 13th to 29th, so why not come along and see a world of wildlife brought alive by a charm of gifted artists. Follow NEWA on facebook for further details.

JunE HIgHLIgHTS
GARDeNING BY JANeT HeATH
JUNe is a lovely month when the summer flowers come into their own, there may be first harvest of new potatoes and fresh salad leaves from the vegetable patch.
Flowering plants to look out for in June are shrubs such as Philadelphus (Mock Orange) with some varieties having scented flowers. Try Belle Etoile, Virginal with white flowers or Philadelphus coronarius Aureus with golden yellow foliage and scented white flowers. They will grow well in most soils in sun or light shade. If you have poor dry soil in sun and want a shrub that will cope, try the Cistus Grayswood Pink, or Cistus x purpureus both of which have bright pink flowers. The varieties Cistus Snow Fire and Cistus x aguilarii Maculatus have white flowers with maroon spots at the base of each petal. For those with a moist soil look out for Viburnum plicatum Lanarth or Mariesii with tiers of horizontal branches with lacecaps of white flowers in May and June. Roses will be flowering in June and look great underplanted with lavender if you have dry soil or drifts of Alliums. Allium christophii with large round heads of starry purple flowers or Allium Globemaster which is taller at about 75cm. They will come up year after year and dry well for winter decorations. Geraniums are great for ground cover with the pink flowered Geranium endressii, blue flowered Geranium himalayese Gravetye or Geranium macrorrhizum Album. The last one will even flower in dry shade. In the vegetable garden you will need to look out for blackfly on broad beans I spray with soapy water to get rid of them. Remove side shoots from growing tomatoes and tie them in to the supporting canes as they grow. You can sow seeds of French beans and courgettes to fill spaces from spent crops and give you a late crop at the end of summer. Continue sowing salad seeds such as rocket, lambs lettuce, radishes or lettuce for continuous cropping.
