Courses - - Summer 2012 (June - September)

Mondays
Advanced Theory & O.S.C.E. Preparation (IAM)
Students are prepared to be evaluated, at the provincial hands-on examination. (48 hrs) Pre-requisite: Complete Massage Therapy Semesters 1-5 Mondays 1:15 - 5:15pm June 25 to September 10 (no class July 2, August 6, September 3)

Ethics & The HCP (All)


An introduction to the professional role and the ethical commitment that practitioners must have as healthcare professionals. (24 hrs) No pre-requisite Mondays 3:15 5:15pm June 25 to September 17 (no class July 2, August 6, 13, September 3)

Pharmacology (IAM/TCM)
Learn the different classifications of medications, uses and effects. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Anatomy/Physiology 4 Mondays June 25, July 9, 16, 23, 30 (3:15 5:15pm) & August 27, September 10, 17 (1:15 3:15pm)

Terminology (TCM)
Learn to pronounce and understand Pin Yin & Chinese characters for TCM purposes. (24 hrs) No pre-requisite Mondays 6:00 9:00pm June 25 to August 27 (no class July 2, August 6)

Anatomy/Physiology 1 (All)
Introduction to the structure & function of the body. Study of tissues, organs, skeletal and muscular systems. (24 hrs) No pre-requisite Mondays 6:00pm 8:00pm June 25 to September 17 (no class July 2, August 6, September 3)

Pathology 1 (All)
Begin the study of the structural effects of disease, on body systems & organs, at the tissue & cellular level. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Anatomy/Physiology 1 (or in progress) Mondays 8:00 10:00pm June 25 to September 17 (no class July 2, August 6, September 3)

Myology 4 (IAM/TCM)
An in-depth study of the muscles of the head, face and pelvic floor. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Myology 3 Mondays & Tuesdays 1:15 3:15pm June 26, July 3, 10, 17, 23, 24, 30, 31, August 28, September 4, 11, 18

Treatments 1 (IAM)
Students continue to expand the scope of their massage treatment skills and knowledge. (144 hrs) Pre-requisite: Principles of Treatments & Advanced Techniques 8 Mondays 9:00am 12:30pm, Tuesdays 8:30am 12:30pm & Wednesdays 1:15 5:15pm June 25 to September 19 (no class July 2, August 6-22, September 3)

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday


First Aid (All)
Learn how to handle an emergency. The course includes St. John Ambulance certification, life-like training models and practice exercises. (16 hrs) No pre-requisite Consult with the Academy administration office for dates and more information.

Pathology 2, 3 (IAM/TCM/SPA)
(24 hrs per unit) Pre-requisite: Pathology 1 (for all) Mondays 1:15 -3:15pm & Wednesdays 8:30 10:30am Pathology 2 (skin conditions) June 25 to August 1 (no class July 2) Pathology 3 (bone and joint conditions) August 20 to September 19 (no class September 3)

Client Assessment 6 (IAM)


Students evolve their client assessment knowledge skills, acquired in terms 1-5. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Client Assessment 5 Mondays 1:15 3:15pm & Wednesdays 8:30 10:30am June 25, 27, July 4, 9, 11, 18, 25, August 1, 29, September 5, 12, 19

Remedial Exercise 2 (IAM)


Students learn the principles and practice of aerobic and resistance exercises. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Remedial Exercise 1 Mondays 1:15 3:15pm & Wednesdays 10:30am 12:30pm June 27, July 4, 11, 16, 18, 25, August 1, 29, September 5, 12, 19

Treatments 3 (IAM)

Principles of Treatments & Advanced Techniques 1-4 (IAM)
Learn to treat a variety of conditions using massage techniques. (96 hrs) Pre-requisite: Massage 4 & Anatomy/Physiology 4 Mondays & Thursdays 8:30am 12:30pm June 25 to September 20 (no class July 2, August 6-16, September 3)

Tuesdays
Anatomy 8 (IAM/TCM)
An in-depth study of the internal organs. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Anatomy 7 Tuesdays 8:30 10:30am June 26 to September 11 (no class August 7)

Client Assessment 2-3 (IAM)


Students evolve their client assessment knowledge and skills acquired in unit 1. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Client Assessment 1 & Anatomy/Physiology 4 Tuesdays 8:30am 12:30pm June 26 to September 18 (no class August 7, 14)

Tui Na 2 (TCM/SPA)
This second level will present the Tui Na whole body massage and self-massage. Treating common disorders with Tui Na will also be taught. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Tui Na 1 Tuesdays 9:30am 12:30pm August 14 to September 18

Qigong (TCM)
Learn the theory behind Qigong as well as develop various related skills. (24 hrs) No pre-requisite Tuesdays 1:15 4:15pm August 14 to September 18

On-Site Clinical Case Study 2 (IAM)


Each student evolves and applies a treatment plan. A detailed progress report is prepared for 3 months. (48 hrs) Pre-requisite: On-Site Clinic Supervisor Approval Tuesdays 1:15 - 5:15pm June 26 to September 11 (no class August 7)

Off-Sites (IAM)
Practice massage skills acquired in-class, in a variety of public settings. (48 hrs) Pre-requisite: Massage 4 & Anatomy/Physiology 4 Tuesdays 1:15 5:15pm June 26 to September 18 (no class August 7, 14)

Research 2 (IAM/TCMAdv.)
Students are guided through the creation of their own research paper. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Research 1 Tuesdays 3:15 5:15pm June 26, July 10, 24, August 28, September 11

Reflexology 1 (NHSc/SPA)
Learn the principles, theory & practice of Reflexology. Learn zones of the foot & specific reflexes for the major organs & glands. Hands-on experience. This program is coordinated by the founder of the Reflexology Association of Canada. (24 hrs - 1 credit) No pre-requisite Tuesdays 6:00 9:00pm June 26 to August 21 (no class August 7)

Law & Regulations (TCM)
Students will gain an understanding of current provincial laws pertaining to the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. (24 hrs) No pre-requisite Wednesdays 8:30 10:30am June 27 to September 19 (no class August 8)

Physiology 8 (IAM/TCM)
An in-depth look at the respiratory system and further investigation of the renal, endocrine and reproductive systems. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Physiology 7 Wednesdays 8:30 10:30am June 27 to September 12 (no class August 8)

Physiology 5 (IAM/TCM)
The study of the human body on a chemical and cellular level. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Anatomy/Physiology 4 Wednesdays 10:30am 12:30pm June 27 to September 19 (no class August 8, 15)

Point Combinations 2 (TCM)


Students further evolve their knowledge of acupuncture point combinations. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Acupuncture Point Location 1 & 2 Wednesdays 10:30am 12:30pm June 27 to September 19 (no class August 8)

Neuroscience 1 (IAM/TCM)
An in-depth examination of the nervous system. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Anatomy/Physiology 4 Wednesdays 3:15 5:15pm June 27 to September 19 (no class August 8, 15)

Off-Sites (IAM)
Practice massage skills acquired in-class, in a variety of public settings. (48 hrs) Pre-requisite: Massage 4 & Anatomy/Physiology 4 Thursdays 8:30am 12:30pm June 28 to September 20 (no class August 9, 16, 23)

Food Cures (TCM Nutrition) (NHSc/TCM)


Learn the Chinese Medicine suggestions for eating, based on the 5 elements, yin/yang and food energetics. (24 hrs) No pre-requisite Thursdays 9:00am 12:00pm July 5 to September 13 (no class August 9, 23, 30)

An in-depth study of the muscles of the lower extremities. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Anatomy/Physiology 4 Thursdays 1:15 3:15pm June 28 to September 20 (no class August 9, 16)

On-Site Clinical Case Study 1 (IAM)


Each student applies a treatment plan and a detailed progress report is prepared for 3 months. (48 hrs) Pre-requisite: On-Site Clinic Supervisor Approval Thursdays 1:15 - 5:15pm June 28 to September 20 (no class August 9, 16, 23)

Hydrotherapy 1 (IAM/NHSc/SPA)
An introduction to water therapy. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Anatomy/Physiology 4 Thursdays 3:15 5:15pm June 28 to September 20 (no class August 9, 16)

Materia Medica 1 (TCM)


Learn the correct usage of many medicinal herbs; their characteristics & applications. (24 hrs - 1 unit) Pre-requisite: TCM Theory Foundations Thursdays 1:30 - 4:30pm July 19 to September 13 (no class August 7)

Nutrition 2 (NHSc/TCM)
This dynamic ride of your life course guides you towards taking a positive approach to daily food requirements. Evolve your understanding of pH balance, food and non-fanatical healthy living. The teacher has been honored with several international awards and was nominated as the top health educator in Canada. (24 hrs) No Pre-requisite Thursdays 6:00 - 8:00pm June 28 to August 23 (no class August 9)

Trigger Points (IAM/NHSc)
Dynamic approach to soothe and relax muscle tension and spasms. (6 hrs) Pre-requisite: Massage 2 (or in progress) Fridays 6:00 9:00pm September 7, 14

Learn how to thoroughly assess clients for nutrient deficiencies. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Nutrition 3 July 14, 15, 28, 29

Massage 2 (NHSc/RMT/SPA)
Practical training in head-to-toe relaxation techniques. Full body massage completed. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Massage 1 July 21, 22, 28, 29

Homeopathic First Aid (NHSc/SPA)


Learn homeopathic treatments for emergency and acute conditions. (3 hrs) No pre-requisite Saturday 9:00am 12:00pm July 21

Chair Massage (NHSc/RMT/SPA)


Introduction to the theory & practice of chair massage. (12 hrs) No pre-requisite August 11, 12

Massage 3 (RMT/SPA)
Expand knowledge and skills acquired in Massage 2. (24 hrs) Pre-requisite: Massage 2 August 18, 19, 25, 26

Massage 4 (RMT/SPA)
