Mini Childrens Theatre

Print out the templates of actors & props. Cut out each piece roughly and stick to light card. Cut out properly when dry. Cut out and join the 2 sides of the front of the theatre together. Using stick glue to stick the tabs one half behind the other. Glue to card and cut out.

Place the front of your theatre over the shoe box as shown, to measure how much of the shoe box you need to create the stage. Mark with a pen. Stand the box up as shown. With a craft knife (an adults job) cut off the whole right side at the marked points.

Things you need:


scissors stanley knife ( for adults only please ) stick glue light cardboard template printouts ruler 24 wooden skewers ( points cut off ) 1 shoe box ( without the lid )

Top: As shown, cut two long slots 20cm x .5 cm at the front of the box. These are for the two curtains to hang.

Left side: Cut out a hole as shown leaving 4cm on top and 4cm at the bottom. This hole will allow for actors to come and go.

Bottom: Cut 1cm slots in the floor to hold different props. There can be as many as you like. We put in 5.

The original Childrens Theatre is a precious object in the Powerhouse Museums Collection . It was made in Germany between 1880 and 1890.

Sticky tape the front of the theatre to the shoe box. The orchestra at the bottom should hang down 4cm to hang over a table when in use.

Attach one skewer to the back of each actor with sticky tape. They should be stuck sideward as shown.

Attach each curtain to a skewer at the top with sticky tape.

Slot the green and cream curtain into the back slot and the red one into the front. Raise them when you start your play.

Place some props in the slots. You can prop the bottom of the theatre up on each side so the tabs hang down or just bend them and tape tabs underneath the floor.
