CAREER OVERVIEW Hotel industry is a major enabler for various industries like travel, tourism, sports, industrial development and even political events. Today the career opportunities in this field are umpteen and global in nature. Various chains of hotels are operating in India and across the world demanding hospitality and hotel management professionals. A career in Hotel Management involves good presentation, amiable hospitality, operational efficiency and maximisation of profits which make it a challenging yet rewarding career. ELIGIBILITY The minimum qualification required for a diploma and bachelor course in hotel management is 10+2 pass with English as a subject. A Diploma in Hotel Management/Bachelors in Hotel Management course is of one and half to three year duration. Admission depends on the performance of the students in the written admission test, personal interview round and group discussion session. Besides these there are certificate courses in Hotel Management which are of six months to one year duration. EXAMINATION Most of the government recognised institutes conduct Common Entrance Test. The test is of 2 hours and consists of multiple choice questions concerning English, general knowledge, current affairs and numerical ability. The test is held around April every year. Admission depends on the performance of the student in the written test, group discussion and personal interview session. Private institutes also conduct tests on the similar lines. PAYOFF The salary in the hotel industry depends on the size and status of the hotel you are working with, whether it is a luxury, standard or an economy hotel. The general pay packets earned at entry level i.e as a management trainee are Rs 10,000 17,000 per month, as a Manager between Rs 30000 35,000 per month, as a department head you can earn about Rs 60000 per month and as a Director over Rs 1 lakh per month.
