Has anyone ever successfully installed 5.0.7 on an HP ML3350 G5, I'm having installation problems. I checked SCO's HCL before I purchased the systems and it is listed as Certified. The only problem mentioned was the network card, they installed a different card for certification. There were no additional installation notes. From that I assumed that the devices had built in support by SCO. The system has an SAS E200i array controller. USB floppy drive

On my first attempt I booted from the CD and proceeded until it told me there was no hard drive.

After researching I found information on EFS5.770a so I downloaded it, created the floppy, booted from the CD and at the boot prompt I entered:

defbootstr link=hpsas hd=Sdsk Sdsk=hpsas(0,0,0,0) Srom=wd(0,0,0)

The system loads the driver information from the floppy. It prompts me for the license information, shows the CD as Primary/Master and I proceed to where is says:

Re: Install 5.0.7 on HP ML350 G5

'Checking system state and loading installation files. Please wait'

In the lower left hand corner it says: 'Reading Source extracting files'

approx. 15 filenames flash by at which point the message 'Reading Source extracting files' disappears leaving only the message

'Checking system state and loading installation files. Please wait'

on the screen and never proceeds. I left the system at that point overnight, hoping it was doing something and would eventually continue the installation, but it never did continue beyond that point.

ps: There is a newer release for EFS5.770a which is EFS5.790a. I tried that with the same exact results.

Any ideas/help greatly appreciated.

Hi, Robert. I've installed 6 of them the past couple of years. While the first one was, umm, interesting (we had no notice legacy floppy's were no longer Re: Install 5.0.7 on HP ML350 G5 2

Re: Install 5.0.7 on HP ML350 G5 included, or serial/Parallel, and they stopped supplying the tape drive SCSI cable, which now had to be explicitly ordered), the rest went in with no problems. Some notes: With the builtin E200i RAID, the only way to get RAID5 setup correctly is to use the SmartStart CD RAID setup. The native RAID BIOS only offers RAID 0 and 1. Using the CD utility may fix your "No root disk problem" BTW. If you need Serial/Parallel ports, order the adapter from HP. The G5 still has the floppy, serial and parallel controllers onboard the MB. (Not so with the G6 they dropped them entirely from the G6 MB design). Either order a legacy floppy from HP AND cable (Virtually no one carries legacy floppy cables anymore) or get one locally with a black bezel. Messing with USB floppies with 5.0.7 is not worth the grief IMHO. Use a legacy floppy to load the hpsas BTLD. Be sure to postpone configuring the NIC until you can load MP5. The builtin NIC is supported by the drivers found in MP5, or via the hpnicinstall program after EFS is installed. I use a simpler bootstring than you did (note no Sdsk=): defbootstr link="hpsas" hd=Sdsk Srom=wd(0,0,0) Here's the HP order info: G5 Product# for ser/par kit: 401222B21, HP P/N: 384445002. Legacy floppy, Model#409582B21, HP P/N: 399397001. Very useful information, Pat. However, I suggest to carefully consider if RAID 5 is a necessity. If the new server is destined to replace the older one, it should have enough storage space anyway with RAID1 or RAID10. RAID 5 has lower write performance and higher risk of lost data. Since SCO OpenServer Re: Install 5.0.7 on HP ML350 G5 3

Re: Install 5.0.7 on HP ML350 G5 is usually "set it and forget it" type of OS, it is quite possible that no one takes care of it for long intervals, so, at least a hot spare disk should be present with RAID 5. E200(i) has to have BBWC module to provide RAID 5 and does not support RAID 6, AFAIK. I had bad experience with performance of heavily used OpenServer file systems on local RAID 5 configurations. It is good practice always to use Smart Start CD to setup RAID configurations, since it provides more possibilities for tuning (stripe size, proportion of memory used for read/write caching...). I used NEC USB floppy (Model: UF0002, P/N: 1345080861020) for installation of OpenServer 5.0.7 on DL380 G5, since I would have to wait several weeks for HP's part. Darko Krstic .
