Corvettes from many years. Hayes vehicle is a red 2007 C6 coupe with the license plate WAY2FUN, while Schoenrock himself has nine, all from different eras and includes six Indy pace cars. Membership in the club also spans the decades from 20-something owners just getting started to veterans in their 70s. any of Minnesotas bravest will be together in Alexandria June 14-16 as the 137th Minnesota State Fire Department Association Conference takes place. Fire departments from around the state will convene at Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center, but visitors and residents of the area
will also have a chance to see these men and women in action as the convention will also hold a live side-byside burn, fire sprinkler demonstration at the Runestone Community Center parking lot on Thursday, June 14 at 6 p.m. to highlight the importance of sprinklers. Firefighters will also have a chance to take part in the Down and Dirty firefighter challenge at Fat Daddys Ballroom as challengers compete on a timed obstacle course, performing a series of tasks while wearing turnout gear. Spectators can also celebrate the fire departments at the Grand Parade set for Saturday at 2:45 p.m. in downtown Alexandria.

ts a classic! Reminisce at the Vintage Car Club Car Show and Swap Meet. For those with a love for classic vehicles, the 23rd annual Vintage Car Club Car Show and Swap Meet is the perfect step back in time. Held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Sunday, June 24, the gates open at 7:30 a.m. and the show typically boasts 125 to 175 vehicles. Along with the cars on display, there will be food and beverages for sale on site, and a swap meet with
car-related items, models, replicas and hard-to-find parts. There is going to be a give-away for children with the drawing being held at noon. The prize for those ages 6 to 12 is a bike, for chidren 5 years and younger, the prize is a pedal car. The car show will go on rain or shine and proceeds from the Car Show and Swap Meet will be used to put on the car show in 2012, and to fund the various activities the club participates in throughout the year. The club also gives back to the community by donating to various charities. The Vintage Car Club now has more than 130 member families. Their meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m., usually at the Knights of Columbus Hall on 6th and Nokomis, Alexandria. ABOUT THE CLUB Vintage Car Club is a small group of automobile enthusiasts who wish to share their interest in vintage automobiles, as well as provide involvement for the whole family. An official meeting of the Vintage Car Club was held for the first time on December 18, 1969 with 23 paying for their memberships. This past December they celebrated their 40th anniversary and had nine charter members and/or spouses in attendance. For the first few years, just the men attended the monthly meetings. Since help was needed in increasing amounts, the wives became more involved. The women were included on the membership roster in 1978 and in March of 1979 the women were granted the privilege to vote. The club has displayed members cars for the enjoyment of everyone at various locations, and has participated in many parades and car shows. Fun activities throughout the year include a midwinter party, an annual car show, a progressive dinner, a three-day fall tour and a Christmas party.

1965 and was transported to New York just in time for the Worlds Fair. Big Ole arrived at his home in Alexandria in front of the Runestone Museum in December of 1965. Now, almost 45 years later, he still stands strong. KENSINGTON RUNESTONE Its a controversy more than 100 years in the making: Did an immigrant Swedish farmer find a buried rock in 1898 that contained an ancient runic message carved by Viking explorers 100 years before Columbus landed in America? Or is the whole thing a hoax, perpetrated by the farmer or some other prankster? A large replica of the Kensington Runestone is located at a small, wayside rest. Visitors can read the inscription and take a photo by the replica. The replica is located in a small park at the east end of 6th Avenue in Alexandria. erhaps one of the most eyecatching landmarks in Alexandria is Big Ole a 28foot tall Viking statue that stands at the north end of Broadway. Born in 1965, the Viking has become a much-respected resident in the lakes area. The idea for the statue began in January of 1964 when North Star Worlds Fair Corporation in Osseo began working on an addition to the Minnesota display for the New York Worlds Fair. The display was to feature the historical Kensington Runestone in an animated scene titled Minnesota, Birthplace of America. The new item to coincide with this display was the 28-foot, four-ton Viking statue. Big Ole was completed by Gorden Displays of Minneapolis in April of

FORT ALEXANDRIA Houses the Runestone Museum and is a nearly exact replica of the stockade built in 1862 and contains several original buildings, including an 1889 church, a log cabin built in the late 1860s and an 1885 schoolhouse.

State high school clay target championships head to Alexandria
THE 2012 STATE HIGH SCHOOL Clay Target tournament is slated for Saturday and Sunday, June 9-10 at the Alexandria Shooting Park EVENTS WILL INCLUDE School and individual competitions, with honors for individual novice, junior varsity and varsity outstanding performances. Team awards will be given for the top five score category. THE SHOOTING PARK IS LOCATED just south of I-94 off Highway 29 from the Alexandria exit. DID YOU KNOW? The Minnesota State High School Clay Target League (MSHSCTL) began in 2001 and in 2008 had just three teams, growing to six in 2009, 13 in 2010 and 29 in 2011. lexandria will be the site of the state tournament for the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League (MSHSCTL) in June. The Alexandria Shooting Park will host the tournament June 9-10, when individual and team champions will be recognized. Students were trap shooting weekly in April and May at shooting ranges across
the state of Minnesota. MSHSCTLs program attracts students in grades 6-12 to participate in shooting sports while creating a virtual competition among high schools throughout Minnesota. Shooting practices and competition are conducted at a shooting range near the schools location. A true team scoring system is used in three shooting performance categories top score, top five scores and team average score. The numbers of athletes on a team are used to define the eight different conferences that teams compete within. Scores are submitted and posted on the leagues website and compared with other schools performances to determine the earned points for a team. For more information, visit www.mnclaytarget.com.

f you love a parade and who doesnt Alexandria is the place to be on Sunday, June 24 as the 28th annual Vikingland Band Festivals Parade Marching Championship will head down Broadway.The annual event features some of the Midwests finest high school marching bands, which gather in Alexandria to compete in this prestigious marching championship. The 2,000 marching band participants are joined by approximately 20,000 spectators who line Broadway to
witness the best in action. Last years winner in Class A was Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, while Sauk Rapids-Rice won the Class AA title. Park Center grabbed the Class AAA crown and the 728 Cadets of Elk River/Rogers reigned as the Class AAAA champions. Bemidji won the Peoples Choice award with Park Center receiving the Grand Champion trophy. Since the Festivals beginning, 84 different bands have competed in the presigious event. Seven different bands have claimed the Grand Champion title. Come on out and see who rises to the top in 2012! The event kicks off at 1:30 p.m., but come early to ensure getting a good seat!

THE VIKINGLAND BAND FESTIVAL was founded in 1985 and is the highlight of the summer parade marching season. In the past 27 years, the event has drawn 85 different bands from seven states, two Canadian provinces and Norway. PARADE ROUTE The Vikingland Band Festival parade travels south on Alexandrias main street (Broadway) from 4th Avenue to 15th Avenue. TOP NOTCH SEATING Tickets for bleacher seating, in prime viewing areas along the route. This is a convenient option since your ticket ensures that youll have a great seat along the parade route, you dont have to carry your own lawn chair and you dont have to arrive early to claim a good seat. he Shrine Circus is coming back to Alexandria on Friday, June 22. Featuring tigers, elephants and trapeze acts, the circus is high flying fun for all ages. Last years spectacular included Vincenta Pages tiger troup, along with Asian elephants, exciting the crowds with their talents.
Clowns delight the children and acrobatic feats take place high above the ground on the high wires. Two shows will be held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Friday, with an afternoon performance at 2:30 p.m. and an evening encore at 7 p.m.

THE RUNESTONE RACEWAY holds its go-kart action every Friday night at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, beginning at 7 p.m. Pit meeting is at 6:30 p.m. and the National Anthem at 6:45 p.m. WHERE ITS LOCATED The racing oval is found at the west end of the Douglas County Fairgrounds, adjacent to the Viking Speedway. Head north on Highway 29 (Broadway) through Alexandria, passing the Viking Plaza Mall and the Douglas County Hospital. Continue on Broadway to 3rd Avenue, then turn left on County Road 82, heading west. Take a left at the stoplight into the fairgrounds. f you enjoy your racing on a smaller scale, then the Runestone Raceway is for you. High flying go-kart action is located at the west end of the Douglas County Fairgrounds, when the Runestone Go Kart Association holds racing every Friday night at 7 p.m. Admission is free for spectators. Runestone Go-kart Racing, Inc. saw its racing roots begin at the Campbell Raceway oval in the back yard of Harlan Campbells home on McKay Avenue in Alexandria, and in 1978, was incorporated. The entire racing program was then moved to the site it occupies now. The original board members, according to DuWayne Nelson, one of the originators of the program, had to clear a corn field, picking each stalk by hand, to build the new track. The Runestone Raceway began as a
dirt track with no lights, racing on Sunday afternoons. It has since evolved into a clay oval, complete with lighting, an announcer and spectator stands. Its not unusual to find the local Girl Scout troops or the racers themselves singing the National Anthem. A non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, Runestone Go-kart Racing, Inc. also offers up-close action for spectators with pit passes for just $6. The racing program at the fairgrounds provides 12 different categories for young racers - Rookie Flat, Rookie Animal, Sportsman Flat, Sportsman Animal, Junior I Caged Animal, Junior I Cageless Animal, Junior I Cageless Flat, Junior II Caged Animal, Junior II Cageless Animal, Junior II Cageless Flat, Stock Light/Medium/Heavy and Animal Light/Medium/Heavy. Check out future Viking Speedway racers as they begin their careers at the Runestone Raceway every Friday night at 7 p.m.

To be eligible for the 2012 contest, anglers must fill out entry forms completely or they will not qualify. Fish must come from lakes inside Douglas County or Pope County.
Fishing contest makes big changes!

The annual area fishing contest has undergone some big changes for the 2012 season.Those who love fishing said they wanted to see more photos and we listened! Weve added an entirely new publication called Just Fish, which will be just that fish, fish and more fish. Published twice a month, Just Fish will feature photos and information on the biggest catches from area lakes. You can find Just Fish on stands around the area. Monthly big fish will also be featured here in the Vacationer. Heres what youll need to know about this years fishing contest: The contest will run from the opening of the walleye and northern season in May and will end after Labor Day weekend. It has been expanded to include lakes in both Douglas and Pope counties. At the end of the summer, the largest fish in six different categories in both the Junior and Senior Divisions will receive a Just Fish fishing contest T-shirt and season winner certificate. There are two divisions: a junior division for those ages 16 and younger, and a senior division for those ages 17 and older. Each division has six categories walleye, northern, crappie, sunfish, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Anglers can enter their fish at Christophersons Bait in Alexandria or Koeps Bait and Tackle in Glenwood. Entry forms are available in both places and must be filled out completely and clearly or it will not qualify. Fishermen can also e-mail us photos at sports@echopress.com. Anglers must include their name, address, phone number, division being entered, date the fish was caught, species of fish, weight of fish, type of bait used, depth of water and name of the lake where the fish was caught. Fish entered in the contest must come from lakes inside or immediately bordering Douglas and Pope counties.

BE COURTEOUS All trail users should be respectful of each other, regardless of mode of travel, speed or skill level. RIGHT OF WAY Know the specific rules of your trail, which may be local, county, regional or state-controlled. In general, cyclists should yield to all other users. SIGNAL WHEN PASSING Bells are great to use when farther back, especially when followed by a greeting, Good morning, Ill be passing on your left side as you approach. Yelling On yer left while passing at full speed is not courteous or safe. PASS ON THE LEFT Just like a roadway, always pass trail users on the left side and only when it is safe and clear to do so. USE CAUTION AT CROSSINGS There are many types of trail crossings in Minnesota, and can be very dangerous when not paying full attention. Watch for signage and yield to cross traffic. If there are multiple lanes or blind spots, use extra caution. BE PREDICTABLE Trails can be great for training, but trails are for everyone. Never sacrifice your own or someone elses safety for convenience. On busy weekends and evenings, fast training may be best left to the road. Signal your intentions and be sensitive to others. USE LIGHTS AT NIGHT Some trails may be closed after dark. If open, a white headlight is required along with a rear red reflector. Red taillights are strongly recommended. Dark trails can require brighter lights to see hazards. DO NOT BLOCK THE TRAIL Group rides are fun, but dont take up more than your half of the trail. This often means riding single file on the trails. CLEAN UP LITTER Dont leave trash on the trail and pick up items (especially glass or other potentially hazardous debris) to make the trail a better place for everyone.
he Central Lakes Trail is a paved, biking and walking trail that spans Douglas County from Osakis through Evansville and on to Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County. The 55-mile-long trail, located on the old Burlington Northern rail line grade, connects the cities of Osakis, Nelson, Alexandria, Garfield, Brandon, Evansville and Melby in Douglas County. The trail head and parking area in Alexandria is located at the north end of Broadway in Big Ole Central Park. Other trail heads are available in the cities of Osakis, Garfield, Brandon
and Evansville. These trail heads include a parking area, portable restrooms and a trailside shelter. A bike shelter is also available along the trail about one and one-half miles east of Nelson. The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the Lake Wobegon trail, which runs from Osakis through Sauk Centre to St. Joseph. Together, they make the longest paved bike trail in the state. The Central Lakes Trail (www.centrallakestrail.com) is used as a snowmobile trail in the winter, however studs are not allowed.
