1. INTRODUCTION
The Power Management System (PMS) supplied by Marine Electricals forms part of the Main Switchboard and is used to control and monitor the generators and the Main Switchboard. All components forming part of the PMS system is mounted within the Switchboard. A general over view of the Main Switchboard is shown below
MAIN SWITCHBOARD
The switchboard consists of one Ship load busbar sub-divided into two parts via a bus coupler isolator with two Diesel generators rated 344KW connected to one side and one Diesel Generator of 344KW on other side of the bus coupler. The system is provided with two shaft generator rated 900KW, each connected on Busbar Section No.3 & Busbar section No.4 connected through bus coupler 2. one stern thruster rated 500KW and one bow thruster rated 500KW each connected on Busbar Section No.3 & Busbar section No.4 respectively. The Busbar Section No.3 & Busbar section No.4 are connected to shipload busbar section via Bus coupler 3 & Bus coupler 4 as indicated above. The Power Management system consists of Paralleling and Protection Unit for each generators, a Programmable logic control unit and two Display Unit one on Main switchboard and other on wheel House Control Desk.

1.1 THE PRESENT PMS FUNCTIONS
The following basic PMS functions are implemented in the present Power Management System (the PMS functions are active only when the plant is in AUTO mode). User-programmable start priority of diesel generators Load dependent start/stop function incl.: transmission of PMS start/stop commands safety start of stand-by generator sets due to expected stop of a running generator set. transfer of PMS start command in case of failed engagement of the generator set
Common black-out detection and subsequently black-out start of next standby Generator. Load sharing: symmetrical load sharing Conditional connection of Bow Thruster, Stern Thruster and 8 heavy consumers Supervision of the shore connection position Access to: system control commands (Password protected to write) set-points and timers (Password protected to write) measured values system status feedback alarm status feedback
GB OFF sequence:
Generator protection:

supervision of generator voltage and frequency over-current, I> (two step protection) overload, P> (both protection and supervision) reverse power, -P> (protection) undervoltage, UBB< (both protection and supervision) overvoltage, UBB> (both protection and supervision) under-frequency, fBB< (both protection and supervision) over-frequency, fBB> (both protection and supervision) selection of designated alarms status of alarms information of alarms log of alarms high current at the generator set high load at the generator set low frequency at the busbar
Alarm monitoring:
User setup of all relevant parameters of the DG Running hour indication on PPU Short circuit protection of generator breaker by means of a Micro logic trip release of breakers.

2B. PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER
The programmable logic controller is used to acquire and monitor various digital input signal from the PPU and carry out all logical operations of the PMS, based on prevailing conditions and parameters selected. The PLC used is of Schneider Automation, Modicon TSX 37 Premium series and comprises of the following : Hardware Channels 80 80 4 4 Digital inputs Digital outputs analogue inputs analogue outputs

3. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The operator can control the PMS Function through Operating Display Units from Main Switchboard or from Wheel House depending upon the MASTER/SLAVE selection. The operating display units indicate the system Mimic presentation provides continues updated information on the plant operating condition with all details of present alarms status. The operator can view the present Parameters/sequence set on PMS and can also allow him to set all essential operationing PMS parameters (Password Protected) through Operating panels provided on the Main Switchboard. The below is overview of the operating display with Function Keys. The Main Switchboard has three modes of operation selected through the operating display: manual, semi auto and auto mode. In MANUAL mode, the switchboard operations such as start/stop of generators, synchronizing, load sharing of generators and generator breaker controls are carried out manually. SEMI AUTO mode is an operator initiated AUTO mode. In this mode, Generator Start/ Stop and Generator breaker On/Off functions have to be initiated manually by the operator on corresponding windows on the operating display. To start the generator, press the DG ON button on respective windows on the operating display. Once the generator gets started and running, operator has to press the BKR. ON button. Now PMS takes over and carryout automatic synchronization and load sharing. Blackout start of generator is also active in this mode. In AUTO mode, the Power management system is activated. There are three conditions in AUTO mode, in which the next priority generator gets started, synchronised and shares the load. 1. With load dependant start 2. Available power low with heavy consumer request 3. When running generator has a safety stop signal. In case of a dead switchboard the generator with the highest priority will get a start command from the switchboard. Once started and voltage developed, the generator breaker will be closed and connected to the busbar. Subsequently generators will be started by the PMS, based on the priority set and the load requirement of the Switchboard.
Marine Electricals
The programmable logic controller of Modicon make TSX 37 Premium is used to carry out all logical operations to run the power plant in semi-auto/auto mode. The PLC receives inputs from various systems and accordingly gives output command to carry out various operations. The display unit mounted on the switchboard and connected to the PLC is used to monitor various parameters of the generators, switchboard and display alarms generated by the PMS system, in addition to setting of various parameters of the PMS system. The Display unit Provided with 12 Function Key form Main Function selection and 10 Dynamic function keys for sub selections. The display unit will normally indicate the mimic of the system on the main screen (Fig.1)

3.C.1 SEMI AUTO MODE
On selection of semi auto mode, Semi-Auto mode selection page (Fig.3.3) will be displayed. The required Generator or Bus-Coupler to be controlled can be selected from this page through the following function keys:R1 DG1 R2 SG1 R3 DG2 R4 SG2 R5 DG3 R6 BUS COUPLER.
Fig. 3.3
On selection of the required generator control, DG control screen (Fig.3.4) of selected DG appears. Now generator can be start/stop by pressing dynamic key R7/R9. If the breaker ON sequence can be initialized by dynamic key R3. On pressing the Breaker On Key, synchronization starts automatically and breaker gets connected to the busbar. If Breaker OFF key R5 is pressed, breaker off sequence initialized and breaker gets disconnected after de-loading of respective generator. The Master DG Breaker off sequence will not be control from Display Unit to avoid a blackout. The selection of next/previous generator can be navigated through dynamic key R1 & R2
