Session Tutors : : Sept 2011 Jan 2012 (Studio A Coordinator) Dr. Mohd Zafrullah Hj. Mohd Taib & Mr. Mohamad Hanif Abdul Wahab (Studio B Coordinator) Mr. Hamidon Abdullah & A.Prof. Hj.Mohd Ali Yusop

Introduction: The project shall divide into 2 main parts; there will be a group investigated a washing machine through a series of measured drawings. The point is to finds methods for accurately measuring and drawing both physical and ephemeral information about the machine. The second part is to develop individual idea development and creativity in designing a space. The idea is focusing into transforming basic form and elements from the machine through idea implementation and series of site-virtual study. The space may be redefined into a new meaning and interpretation where the entire space may be perceived as a new dimension of interior living space. Objective: Learning outcome expected: - To understand accuracy method of measuring and drawing - To develop critical thinking and progressive enquiry - To question new dimension of structural behaviour, physical form and its meaning - To develop idea through spatial design by maintaining the basic form and elements

Task 1: WASH-N-DRAW
Task: When we investigate further on the subject of washing machine, this man-made object has many aspects of design elements to be analyzed. This subject concludes a series of elements from physical perspective and ephemeral information about the machine. Without those elements and information, we would presume that subject is missing from its contextualise within its function. However, the function is hidden to us. It seems that the subject serve to human without the depth understanding. It is very intriguing subject matter for this semester to investigate. The study shall investigate the internal structure of washing machine. It will lead us to understand not just anatomical imagery proliferated, detailed and informative but also whimsical, surreal and beautiful a dream anatomy that reveals as much about the outer world as it does the inner self. You shall choose part of subject and need to draw in scale the anatomical form/elements/moving part using various techniques such as 2d photos, x-ray visualization, videography, 3d mould and other unexpected technique. Research on the subject matter must have the interesting elements of movement. It will emphasize on the function for the subject matter. Our studio shall continuously involve in visual assessment during the critique session. Also you are encouraged to use photography and videography for investigation process. However, a design sketch is equalled important to show the process of investigation. Process:

1. Disassemble the subject matter (1 group choose 1 part/component of subject matter) guide from the
images taken/download technical manual is needed.

2. Record every process as a part of data collection - free method. 3. Draw in scale a measured drawing to understand the elements/character/ movement of the subject matter.
During investigation, our studio shall be full operated as design laboratory or workshop to enhancing develops of understanding and critical thinking for the research purpose. Therefore, you will need to carry out a technical research and an investigation on subject matter. The subject will be provided by the members of Studio 05 guided by the Studio Tutor and the development of the subject must be presented during you final project. Tools: Your tools for investigation process can be varied from screw driver, cutter, wire, paper, and pencil to plaster of Paris. Do not limit yourself to go further with the material experimentation. It must be clear, precisely and understandable detail, measurable and presentable. Submission: Your submission will be in A2 size and presentable.

Project 2: SPACE MACHINE

Task: You will need to further your investigation in your propose schematic process. It will require you to carry understand of subject elements to fully the concept of designing and developing through form of intervention. The schematic development will ensure the proposed from will intersect within the space proposal. Use this opportunity to examine the viability of this form into your designing space. The process of understanding the space programme will determined the successfulness of your project. Behind the scene For thousands of years human beings have used metaphors as ways of understanding the body. We talk about our 'ear drums', or our 'mind's eye'. When we are in love we say our hearts are 'bursting' or 'broken'. When we are nervous we say we have 'butterflies in our stomach'. When we are impatient we have 'itchy feet'. These familiar images help to explain the unfamiliar and to comprehend the complexity of our bodies. The left image, by the artist Fritz Kahn, shows the nervous system as a complex electronic signaling system, complete with buttons, charts and busy workers. Fritz Kahn's books and illustrations explored the inner machinery of the human body, using metaphors of modern industrial life. Kahn turned the brain into a complex factory with light projectors, conveyor belts, secretaries and cinema screens; he showed the journeys of blood cells as locomotives encircling the globe; and he compared bones to modern building materials such as reinforced concrete. Material investigations: Throughout history concept and material, in alteration, seem to have been designs most critical components. Influential interior architectural concepts have been formulated through material developments; cultural breakthroughs have been interwoven with technological advancement. Our studio not only recognizes the value of material and technique oriented laboratory work, but believes the next significant design movement will be based on material dexterity in particular. We will therefore deepen and widen our investigations into a range of generative material. In Both project we will advancing on material usage and its potential. Process: We will use the values of machine to achieving incredibly high levels spatial design. Thanks to the latest technology: motor controller, for example, required only a simple and relatively process to rotate in certain time. For this machine its calculated movements acting solely as a functional cog in the intelligence space.

We shall begin with an experiment the potential to create a spatial living free from pollution and discomfort physical living system a kind of utopia in which machines would bring us green and sustainability toward nature, and would provide enough quality environment and protection We will see the question as scalable where macro and micro exist simultaneously We will see mechanical components/elements/system/structure as the expression of your design intent through development of multiple spatial/mechanism sculptures and models Analyze and understand the sites and respond accordingly Research on experimental materials and construction techniques using prototypes, models and digital fabrication.

Tools: Along the way we will be briefly engaged with the computer and its output/input processes while searching for new ways to twist the given condition of architectural computing. We see the physical model as a clear expression of the design intent and use it to record the development process. We do not seek to merely render the single condition present in the design, but to explore, examine and remodel by continuously examining the subject. It then can successfully become a breeding ground for the new. Studio 5 encourages you this semester to embark on a series of projects related to education. Mistakes will be made and myths will be created. They might be essential to help you understand the complexity of design. Submission: Your final of submission will be standardised into A2 size and presented into a narrative work. Your report study will be compiled into A3 booklet and softcopy will be submitted together. Models will be photographed and documented. Your portfolio will be evaluated through your extensive study and design development process. Final works will not be taken as your final work representation for entire semester. We encourage studio 5 to look into video presentation and photo montage/photorealism technique. Digital fabrication on space is most welcome.
