Journalism is the way people communicate with the world through various media tools.

It is also professional communication where researches and ethics codes are taking places. News values among different media platforms have always been displayed. When people evaluate news story newsworthy or not, human interest of a news story always comes to be the first indicator. As there was huge loss of life and damages in Japans Tsunami in 2011, the media evoke public attention such as sadness and shocks from the audiences. In this annotated bibliography, Japans Tsunami in 2011 has been explored through the reflection of VOA news, Karen Sternheimer and the Australian. These three mediums are representing television documentary, journalist blog and online article respectively.

Montgomery, M. (2007). The Disclose of Broadcast News. New York: Routledge. The author of The Discourse of Broadcast News: A Linguistic Approach, Martin Montgomery is a current professor at school of humanities and social sciences in University of Strathclyde. The book uses in-depth analysis of discourse of broadcasting news to pictures how vital conventions for presenting news are transforming (Montgomery, 2007). Also, the book discusses the ways audiences perceive medias credibility (Montgomery, 2007). Montgomery (2007) suggested that Bad news make good news as the reason that negative news tend to spread out sooner than positive news and that denotation of negative event can be emotionally charged and clear-cut to the audiences. Therefore, news value can always be linked with news negativity such as wars and natural disasters. Furthermore, unexpectedness in the news items are always be taken into the media exposure but not the routine events (Montgomery, 2007). In conclusion, huge natural disaster events

such as earthquake and tsunami contain plenty of human interest and often offer a wide array of persuasive pictures which are generally regarded as powerful and good news items. Ridgwell, H. (2011). Fears of suicide surge in Japans tsunami zone [video recording]. America: Voice of America News(VOA). The VOA News video reflected on Japans tsunami in 2011 that has been encouraging numbers of Japanese who commit suicide. This video interviewed a mental health experts called Kazuko Demura who works for phone counseling service in Japan (Ridgwell, 2011). Demura explained that the psychological effects from this disaster had on Japanese people and caused them to commit suicide became a mainsteam issue in Japan (Ridgwell, 2011). Goffman (1959) claimed that the front stage is where an individual perform their particular impression to their audiences, on the other hands, the backstage is where an individual hide their self in. When the victims of this tsunami expressed their concerns and worries in front of the camera in this video, their feeling can no longer be hidden in back stage and be exposed to the front stage which is the public. According to Broadcasting Board of Governors (2012), VOA produces programs in over 26 languages and therefore receives a large portion of national and international audiences. Unlike the FOX news which is privately owned, VOA is an official external broadcast institution of the United States federal government (Wikipedia, 2012). This video is likely to be trusted by its audiences as its publicity and it is credible by representing the U.S. federal government. Moreover, being a part of public media, the video is well-researched and objective in comparison to the FOX news.

FOX News (2012, March 13). Official: Death Toll in Japan Quake 'Likely' to Exceed 10,000. FOX News. Retrieved From http://www.foxnews.com/world/2011/03/13/official-death-toll-japan-quake-likelyexceed-10000/#ixzz1vaOFF2VP/ The FOX News (2011) wrote that after Japans tsunami in 2011, Japanese people were suffering from huge human loss, nuclear leaks crisis and lack of resources for living. The main idea of this news article is to show the audiences the increasing loss of human life and damage of environment from Japans earthquake in 2011. Statics of death toll has been used throughout the whole article (FOX News, 2011). As the above journal article has showed, the loss of human life can actually impress the audiences (XXX, 2007). FOX New, as a privately owned television station by Rupert Murdoch, has received a lot of controversial opinions by the public about its bias. In contrast to VOA news, FOX news did not provide professionals opinions on that event but only interviewed the victims in that incident. According to Aristotles mode of persuasion, there are three ways of persuasion- Ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos is referred to credibility of evidences, which VOA news achieved to provide credibility to its audiences by professionals opinions, however FOX News failed to provide it. Sternheimer, K. (2011, May 23). Social Problems and Anomic Suicide [Web log post]. Retrieved from http://www.everydaysociologyblog.com/2011/05/social-problemsand-anomic-suicide.html/ Karen Sternheimer (2011) described the relationship between increase in suicide and the Japns earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in 2011. According to Sternheimer (2011), survivors of such huge disaster may feel a sense of order is disrupted and their society cannot be repaired economically and environmentally in

their life time. Survivors of disasters may not know how to begin to put their lives back together, therefore, the survivors get depressed and some of them choose to commit suicide (Sternheimer, 2011). This journalist blog tried to make sense of how sociological and many other factors contribute to a person's decision of committing suicide from the case of Japans tsunami in 2011. It appears to be emotional and persuasive to the readers. Compare to the VOA News and FOX News, information on this blog is interactive but not one way. In the era of Web 2.0, information is not only depends on the provider, but also interact with the other internet users. Journalist blog now become a professional media platform for news flow and it can also be credible at the same time. With readers responding on the blogs, people can actually connect with the others and the society. Nature of the news is to connect the publics with current information, a journalist blog is a good way to achieve it if it is trustfulness.

Journalism now has been innovating among different media platforms. A professional journalist as a communicator should be able to follow the ethics codes while using different media platform to provide news stories to the public. From the above example, VOA News, FOX News and Karen Sternheimers blog gained publicity as the reason of Bad news make good news which theory of Montgomery has been provided in the second paragraph of this article.
