Passive Solar Architecture In Convention Center Design

PRESENTED BYABHIMANYU SETIA (BARC/1027/08)

In passive solar building design, windows, walls, and floors are made to collect, store, and distribute solar energy in the form of heat in the winter and reject solar heat in the summer.

Project

Building Convention Center Site Delhi Capacity 2300 people Area 8 acres

Site

Climate
The climate of Delhi is a monsooninfluenced humid subtropical with high variation between summer and winter temperatures and precipitation Delhi has relatively dry winters and has a prolonged spell of very hot weather Summers : March - October ( peak May ) Winters : November - February ( peak January )

Wind
January May : West and North West June August : East and South East September December : West and North West

Challenges

Air-conditioning load Heat island effect Natural ventilation Ample Daylight

Creating a cooler micro-climate

Evaporative cooling due to water body all around the building Minimum heat-island effect due to extensive landscaping and tree plantation

Optimizing Daylight
Making two layer building skin with of ETFE (Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) applied on steel space frame structure Ample daylight enters the building , controlled in different areas by adjusting the dot pattern on the skin Also used in Beijing National Aquatics Center

Optimizing Daylight
Dense dot pattern allowing required south light in administration and back stage area Very dense dot pattern reflecting most of the daylight in the auditorium area Very light dot pattern allowing ample north daylight in the banquet, restaurant ,waiting areas

Summer cooling techniques

Heat energy gets trapped in the two skins and is taken out by a fan blowing air out and replacing it with fresh air

Summer cooling techniques

Heat energy gets trapped in the two skins and is taken out by a fan blowing air out and replacing it with fresh air Cooling requirement getting considerable reduced

Building ventilation
Placing wind scoop on west faade

Building getting naturally ventilated with cool and fresh air

Winter cooling techniques

Building acting as a green house in winters as hot air is not blown out Resulting in minimized heating load

Retrofitting Done

Making two layer building skin with of ETFE (Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) Placing wind scoop on west faade Water body all around Extensive Landscaping
