"inappropriate touching and kissing" with two teenage

The incidents, however, extend beyond the District of
Columbia's statute of limitations.
Between 1986 and 2001, nine priests in the

a teenage seminary student in the 1970s. The Missouri
diocese where the abuse occurred paid the victim

RICO to file a federal suit accusing Connell and all US
Catholic Bishops of covering up the crime. O'Connell
resigned after admitting to the abuse.
United States Rev. Joseph In the late 1990s, the Archdiocese of Miami secretly
(FL) Cinesi 148 made financial settlements for a sex abuse case. Cinesi
stepped down in August 1999, saying he wanted to
fight the allegations.
In 1988, a male victim accused Burke of molesting him
repeatedly the previous year. The Tampa police
dropped the case when it was first reported that year.

The victim has now filed suit against the Vatican, Pope

John Paul II, the Salesians the (religious order that runs
the school where the abuse occurred), the Diocese of
St. Petersburg and Father Burke.
In 2001, the former communications director for the
diocese accused Lynch of sexual harassment. Lynch

$100,000 payment in late 2001, but it claims the money
was a severance payment, not a settlement.
Father Allen was accused of fondling an adolescent

In 2002, Orlando was accused of sexual misconduct

allegations were revealed in April 2002.

In April 2002, two women accused Morris of
participating in an obscene phone call and kissing a girl

was suspended from in ministerial duties after the
allegations arose.
Schaeufele was accused in April 2002 of engaging in

resigned when the allegations surfaced.
United States Myles White The police have a videotape of him having sex with a

The parents of a deceased man claim their son was
abused by the two priests between 1974 and 1977.
Rev. Richardo They assert that the church tried to cover up the
allegations when the victim first reported the abuse in

1988, and they are now suing the priests and the

archdiocese for damages. The archdiocese denies the

report. Rev. Guichard, currently serving as a priest in
Miami Beach, refuses to comment on the case. Rev.
Castellanos, currently serving in Pompano Beach,
denies all charges.
Three sisters sued the Miami church and archdiocese in
July 2002 alleging that Estevez knew about their abuse
by a church carpenter in 1989 at the ages of 8,9, and
10. The youngest sister said that Estevez watched as
the abuser, Juan Marcello Sastre, led her out of the
restroom and did nothing. Estevez called the girls'

United States parents the same summer and warned to be careful of

to them. The lawsuit states that the girls' parents
reported the abuse to Estevez in 1999 and again in
2000. Estevez responded that the statute of limitations
had expired and that they should not contact the police.
Estevez is now a professor at St. Vincent De Paul
Seminary in Boynton Beach.
United States Jeremiah He faced allegations connected with an Internet date
(FL) Spillane 159 with a 13-yr. old boy.
Two lawsuits have been filed against Malicki. One,
filed in 1998, accused him of attempted rape of a 13-
year-old girl. A second adult woman alleges that
United States Rev. Jan Malicki engaged in a consensual sexual relationship
(FL) Malicki 160 with her. Malicki was removed from his parish and
suspended from ministerial duties in 1998. The
archdiocese assigned him to be a chaplain at a rest
home, but Malicki declined the assignment.

He was accused of fondling altar boys.

In May 2002, Bukoski was accused of sexually abusing
United States Fr. Joseph a minor in the early 1980s. After the allegations

surfaced, Bukoski was placed on leave.
He was accused in March 2002 of engaging in
"inappropriate sexual misconduct with a minor." The

state attorney general's office is investigating the

complaint. Kealy has withdrawn from active ministry
and lives in a "restricted, monitored setting."
United States Rev. Anthony J. He was accused in April 2002 of engaging in sexual
(IL) Ross 167 misconduct with a teenage boy in 1983. Ross was
placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
United States Rev. Kevin Cole In 2002, two women claimed they were abused by Cole
when he was a priest at St. Luke Church between 1968

and 1970. Cole died in 1990.
One man filed a lawsuit in 2002, accusing Scherzer of

molesting him when he was twelve years old (between
(KY) Scherzer 205
1956 and 1958). Scherzer retired in 1995.
In October 2002, Hargadon was indicted on a charge of
second-degree sodomy by a Jefferson County grand
jury. The indictment against Hargadon accuses him of
engaging in "deviate sexual intercourse" with a boy
United States Rev. James under the age of 14. Hargadon has been named in four
(KY) Hargadon 206 lawsuits against the archdiocese. The suits filed by four
men, claim they were sexually abused by the priest
when they were children in the 1970s. Hargadon was
asked to refrain from all public ministry after being
named in a lawsuit in May 2002.
In 1988, Clark plead guilty to first-degree sexual abuse
and second-degree sodomy of two students in 1981 and
United States Rev. Daniel C. 1982. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 15 years
(KY) Clark 207
probation. As of October 2002, Clark was facing 18
other counts of sexual misconduct.
In 1986, Father Gary Hayes returned to his childhood
church to report that Fathers O'Connell and McGarvey
had sexually abused him when he was a teenager. The
allegations were detailed in an internal memo, but no
Father William action was taken against the priests. McGarvey was
given a promotion and transferred. O'Connell was later

United States convicted of sexually assaulting three boys; he resigned
and Father
(KY) from the priesthood and has since passed away. In

1991, Father Hayes again initiated an investigation into

the priests. He filed a lawsuit against the diocese, in
which he was jointed by two other men who had been
victimized by the same priests. The lawsuit was settled
out of court, and McGarvey-still denying the abuse-
retired.
In 1984, Rev. Gilbert Gauthe admitted he abused 37

boys (although there is speculation he may have

molested as many as 150). Gauthe accepted a plea
bargain in 1985 and was sentenced to 20 years in
prison. After being released from prison in 1995, he
was again imprisoned for two years on a new
accusation that he had raped a 12-year-old girl in the
1980s. Gauthe was again released in February 2000.

Andries was first accused in 1998 of fondling a boy,
but at that time his parents asked authorities to not to
prosecute in order to protect their child. Andries was

but he later resumed work in that parish. In 2001 he
was again accused of sexual misconduct with a teenage
boy, in the same parish.
He was accused in April 2002 of molesting a youth in
United States Rev. Charles G.
Boston during the 1970s. Coyle was suspended in April

2002 after the allegations arose.
Rogge was convicted in 1985 for sexually abusing a
United States Rev. Norman J. boy in Florida. After serving time for that conviction,
(LA) Rogge 213 Rogge was transferred to Louisiana, where he served as
a priest for at least ten years.
Alexander was removed in April 2002 after he
United States Rev. Joseph admitted to having a sexual relationship with a teen-
(LA) Alexander 214 age boy 40 years ago in Kentucky. The incident
occurred before he was ordained as a priest.

He was sued for abusing boys.

Doucette admitted in February 2002 to being
"intimately involved" with a 15-year-old boy 20 years
United States Rev. Michael ago. Bishop Gerry ordered Doucette to make a public
(ME) Doucette 217 confession and removed him from his duties in
February 2002 after a second victim accused Doucette
of unwanted sexual advances.
Audibert's victim publicly accused him of molestation
United States Rev. John in 1993. Audibert was ordered to make a public
(ME) Audibert 218 confession in February 2002 and was removed from his
ministry.
Church officials reported problems with Lauzon from
Rev. Raymond-
United States the time he was in seminary. Still, he was shuffled

(ME) from parish to parish before becoming director of a

church thrift shop in Maine. There, he is accused of
abusing six brothers. He was indicted on charges of
gross misconduct with two of the victims in 1984.
After serving four and one-half months in jail, Lauzon
returned to parish work. In 1990 he joined a Franciscan
monastery and three years later he moved to Lithuania.
Several additional lawsuits filed in the 1990s accused
Lauzon of abusing children in the 1970s and 1980s.
United States Thomas Smith Smith admitted to fondling children. He later
(MD) 220 committed suicide.
Cox was arrested in May 2002 on charges he molested
an 11 year-old-boy in 1980. Cox had been suspended

from the priesthood in 1995 following another

accusation of abuse. He was never charged for that
crime.
Blackwell is accused of abusing Dontee Stokes,
beginning when the latter was a boy in the mid 1960s
and continuing for a decade. Stokes claims he reported
the abuse to police in 1993, but there was not enough
evidence to file charges. At that time, Blackwell
underwent three months of counseling and was
returned to parish work. In 1998, Blackwell admitted to
engaging in sexual activity with the boy from 1971
to1975 (when the victim was 16-20 years old). After

priestly duties. Church officials claim they reported the
abuse to the police, but authorities have no record of
the allegations. Following the shooting, a second man
came forward to report he, too, was sexually abused by
Blackwell as a teen. This second victim reported his
case to the church and police in 1998. 223 Stokes shot
Blackwell on May 13, 2002. Blackwell was treated and
released from the hospital. Stokes, was acquitted of
attempted murder and assault in December 2002. 224
Between the mid-1960s and 1988, church officials sent
Petrella to receive psychiatric treatment three times,
following allegations of abuse. Each time he was
returned to his ministry. Petrella was dismissed in 1989
after a new allegation arose. He was sentenced to three
United States Rev. Robert months in jail for that abuse, but served only seven
(MD) Petrella 225 days. During the recent media attention on this topic,
several other men have come forward with reports that
Petrella molested them as children. Despite the fact that
Petrella has been removed, his archdiocese has
received calls from individuals who claim they've seen
Petrella wearing a priest's collar recently.
Banko is one of six former seminarians accused of
sexually abusing children while studying at St. Mary's
Seminary in Baltimore. Banko was a student at St.

John Banko 226 Mary's from 1964 through 1972. He is accused of
(MD) sexually abusing a minor from 1970-1980. He is also
charged with sexually assaulting an 11-year-old altar
boy in New Jersey in 1993 or1994.
Haight is one of six former seminarians accused of
sexually abusing children while studying at St. Mary's
Seminary in Baltimore. Haight studied at St. Mary's
from 1972 to75. In April 2002, A 43-year-old man
United States Mark Haight accused Haight of molesting him while on a camping
(MD) 227 trip in 1974 and in Haight's room at the seminary. In
2002, the diocese of Albany, where Haight was later
ordained, acknowledged that it had paid a $1 million
dollar settlement in a 1997 sex abuse case involving
Haight. Haight was removed from ministry in 1996.
Ball is one of six former seminarians accused of
sexually abusing children while studying at St. Mary's
Seminary in Baltimore. In 1994, two brothers accused

1975 while he was attending St. Mary's.Ball was
removed from the priesthood and served jail time for
other child sex offenses.
McGrath is one of six former seminarians accused of
sexually abusing children while studying at St. Mary's
Seminary in Baltimore. In 2002, a man reported to
United States Francis McGrath Baltimore church officials that McGrath had sexually
(MD) 229 abused him during the 1970s. McGrath left the
priesthood in 1974 after sex abuse claims from "three
or four victims" surfaced in different parishes in New
Jersey.
Melville is one of six former seminarians accused of
sexually abusing children while studying at St. Mary's
United States Raymond Seminary in Baltimore. In 1990, a boy in Baltimore
(MD) Melville 230 accused Melville of abusing him from 1980 to 1985
while he was at St. Mary's. A man in Maine says
Melville assaulted him from 1985-1992.
LaMountain was accused of molesting a 14-year-old
boy in his room at the seminary in 1973. Baltimore
United States Michael prosecutors closed the case because of a lack of
(MD) LaMountain 231 evidence. LaMountain later pleaded guilty to sexually
assaulting five teenage boys in Rhode Island from
1979-1992.
In 1991, a victim accused Spillane of sexual abuse. At
that time, he admitted to molesting six youths between
1969 and 1986. The Archdiocese of Baltimore claims
that it revoked Spillane's right to celebrate Mass and
United States Rev. Michael J. perform the sacraments. Spillane sought treatment and
(MD) Spillane 232 resigned from parish work. He has been working at the
Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions for the
past 16 years, most recently as executive director. The
archdiocese recently received a new allegation that
Spillane abused a child in the late 1960s.
Reports were made in June 2002 that Loskarn sexually
abused a teenage boy in the early 1970s. Loskarn
admitted to the abuse and was immediately suspended.
United States Rev. George B.
At the time of the abuse, Loskarn was the pastor at a
(MD) Loskarn 233
Baltimore-area church. However, the abuse reportedly
occurred in New York. The Baltimore archdiocese
plans to notify New York authorities about the case.
Bishop Gordon Bennett requested the resignation of
Rev. Malia in June of 2002, after learning that Malia
hired a convicted sex offender to serve as interim
United States Rev. Thomas R. music director of his church. The music director had
(MD) Malia 234 been convicted in 1997 of sexual abuse with his 17-
year-old student. The Bishop indicated that Malia will
most likely be reassigned as associate pastor to another
parish.
In 2002, Danilak was accused of sexually abusing a 15-
year-old altar boy in the 1978. According to the police,
the victim reported the abuse on multiple occasions.
United States Rev. John The police and church officials were unconvinced that
(MD) Danilak 235 the abuse had occurred. In September 2002, a grand
jury indicted Danilak on two counts of sodomy, one
count of child abuse and 11 counts of perverted or
unnatural sex acts.
Brown plead guilty to sexually molesting a 12-year-old
boy and his 10-year- old brother in the mid to late
1970s. The abuse occurred while Brown was

removed from the active ministry in 1988, officially for
"personality issues." Some claim that he was removed
for engaging in improper behavior with teenage boys.
In July of 2002, Dean was placed on administrative

Archdiocese of Baltimore claimed that the allegations
did not appear to be credible, but that the investigation
had surfaced concerns about Dean's ability to work
with children. Dean resigned in September 2002.
Rydzewski was charge in June 2002 with receiving and
possessing sexually explicit images of minors. He had

been involved with ministering to youths in his parish,

but he was suspended in December 2001 when the first
search warrant was issued against him.

A nun reported in 1990 that Schwind raped her in
1989. According to records in the Maryland State
Attorney General's office, the church requested that the
United States Rev. Thomas R. victim drop the case and insisted that Schwind would
(MD) Schwind 240 receive counseling. Instead, he was transferred to
another parish. He eventually left the Catholic church
and now serves as a Pentecostal minister. In 2002, at
the request of the victim, the state reopened the case.
Ryan was accused in a 2002 lawsuit of molesting a
teenage boy nearly 25 years ago. He was placed on
administrative leave during the investigation. In early

2002, Chris Nilan testified that Ryan sexually abused
three minors and maintained a sexual relationship with
one of them until three years ago.
Geoghan was convicted in January of 2002 of
molesting a ten-year-old boy; he currently faces two
more criminal charges. The church had previously
settled about 50 lawsuits against Geoghan for more
United States John J. Geoghan than $10 million. In March 2002, the Archdiocese of
(MA) 242 Boston agreed to pay up to $30 million to 86 people
who accused him of child molestation. Cardinal Law
repeatedly reassigned Geoghan to new parishes after
allegations of abuse surfaced in 1984 and again in
1989. He removed Geoghan from parish duty in 1998.

Shanley has been accused of molesting or raping at
least 26 children over three decades. Throughout the
1990s, the Archdiocese of Boston transferred Shanley
to parishes in Massachusetts, Nnew York and
California, after they had knowledge of his actions.
The Boston archdiocese has settled at least three abuse
United States Rev. Paul R. suits against Shanley. As of the beginning of 2002,
(MA) Shanley 245 Shanley had retired from the priesthood and was
serving as a volunteer with the San Diego Police
Department; he was dismissed from that job in early
April 2002 because of the disclosure of sexual abuse
allegations. He was arrested in May 2002 and charged
with ten counts of child rape and six counts of indecent
assault and battery, to which he plead not guilty.
In 2002, Spagnolia was accused of abusing a 14-year-
United States Rev. D. George old boy. The Boston archdiocese placed him on
(MA) Spagnolia 247 administrative leave in February 2002. Spagnolia
denies the charge.246
Many people came forward during March and April of
2002, accusing Birmingham of molesting them over a
thirty-year period. Several individuals claim that they
reported the abuse to church officials, who transferred
Rev. Joseph E.
United States Birmingham to other parishes after learning of the
Birmingham
(MA) abuse. The Archdiocese of Boston settled an abuse case

against Birmingham in 1996, paying $60,000 to the
victim. Birmingham is deceased. Several plaintiffs are
currently suing the Archdiocese, Cardinal Law and
New Hampshire Bishop John McCromack.
Welsh was accused in February 2002 of molesting
United States Rev. Joseph
three brothers for two decades. He was suspended after

the allegations were raised.
In 1964, a mother informed church officials the
O'Sullivan had molested her 12-year-old son.
Documents from the time indicate that the officials

were aware of the problem, but no action was taken.

More complaints were reported in 1984, and O'Sullivan
plead guilty in court to molesting an altar boy. After
church officials urged that he not be sent to prison, he
was released on probation and ordered to have no
contact with children. Nevertheless, he was transferred
to a parish in New Jersey in 1985. He served at four
parishes there, but three of them were never informed
of his prior conviction. O'Sullivan's actions were
publicly disclosed in 1993, and he was eventually
removed from the ministry.
In 1977 the police caught the priest engaging in a
sexual act with a teenage boy in a car. Bishop Thomas
Daily, the same bishop that ignored complaints about
United States Rev. Edward T.
Rev. Shanley, stepped in and convinced the police to
(MA) Kelley 251
let him handle the situation. Daily told the police that
the priest would be sent for treatment, but there is no
evidence he ever received treatment.
A pastor reported in 1974 that Tourigney was involved
with a teenage boy. Both parties denied the charge at
the time, but the boy reported the case to church
United States Rev. Ernest E. authorities 11 years later. Tourigney admitted his guilt
(MA) Tourigney 252 and received counseling, and he was allowed to
continue his ministry. New allegations were reported in
1992. At that time, he received additional treatment
and was removed from the priesthood.
In 1988, Graham was accused of molesting a 14-year-
old-boy in 1968. Graham admitted to the abuse but was
allowed to continue his ministry. In 1992, another
allegation was made against Graham for abuse
United States Rev. Daniel M. perpetuated in the early 1980s. Graham denied the
charges, but a 1995 review board recommended that he
(MA) Graham 253
be prohibited from serving in a parish or working with
minors. They reversed that decision in 1996, allowing
him to return to full service. He was made area vicar, in
charge of 19 parishes, the same year. Graham was
suspended in 2002 in the midst of the Boston scandal.
Former altar boy Paul Edwards alleged that Foster
molested him on numerous occasions between 1980
and 1985. The archdiocese put Foster on administrative
leave while it conducted an investigation into the

claims. The archdiocese reinstated Foster after the
(MA) Smith Foster
investigation, but placed him back on leave week later
after receiving new information from Edwards about
the abuse. 254 In November 2002, Foster was cleared
and reinstated for a second time. 255
United States Brother Fidelis DeBerardinis was arrested in August 2002 on charges
(MA) DeBerardinis of sexually abusing four altar boys from 1968 to. The
256 victims' ages ranged from eight thirteen years old at the
time of the first abuse. DeBerardinis was indicted on
eleven counts, including rape and attempted rape of a
child.
In August 2002, Hurley was indicted on two counts of
child rape. The accuser claims that Hurley abused him
as often as once a month between 1987 and 1988.
United States Rev. Paul W. Hurley befriended the boy during the time that he was
(MA) Hurley 257 the pastor at the boy's church and eventually paid him
for performing sexual favors. Hurley was placed on
administrative leave and is restricted from practicing
public ministry.
In the early 1990s, Porter was charged with molesting
more than 130 children in Minnesota, Massachusetts
United States Rev. James and New Mexico in the 1950s and 1960s. He pled
(MA) Porter 258 guilty in 1993 to molesting 28 children and was
sentenced to 18 to 20 years in prison. Porter left the
priesthood in the early 1970s.
In April 2002, Desilets was indicted on 27 counts of
indecent assault and battery against 18 altar boys. He is
United States Fr. Paul Desilets being sued in civil court by 20 former altar boys.
(MA) 259 Investigations are currently underway to determine
whether church officials knew of allegations of abuse
before transferring Desilets.

that he was with the woman when she suffered a fatal
overdose and did not call the police until it was too

In 1993, a boy accused DeSutter of molesting him
several years earlier. When the allegation was reported,
the victim's family was assured that DeSutter would

and the case was settled out of court. DeSutter retired
in Arizona. He is not currently working as a priest.
Kern was transferred from his parish in 1969 after the
mothers of two boys accused him of fondling their
sons. In 1977, a 15-year-old boy also accused him of

in a parish. Kern continued to serve as associate pastor
at a Minnesota church as recently as February 2002.
In 1990, Jeub was accused of being sexually active
with several women. One woman sued Jeub for sexual
abuse perpetuated against her in 1969, when she was

resigned from his position as associate pastor of St.
Rosa of Lima Catholic Church after a newspaper article
disclosed the allegations against him.
Several teenage boys brought lawsuits against Wajda in
United States Rev. Joseph the late 1980s, alleging sexual abuse. Wajda was

archdiocese, where he still serves.
In May 2002 a man accused Dudley of fondling him in
the 1950s, when he served as an altar boy. The vicar

but there was insufficient evidence to support her

Arthur Andreas reported to the St. Louis archdiocese
that Anderson had abused him in 1988. Andreas made
his accusations quietly and privately to the church

accusations public by denying them at the pulpit and
suing Andreas for defamation. In November, Andreas
countersued.
In 1982, the mother of three young boys accused
Valentine of molesting her sons. She claims that at the
time church officials failed to respond. In 1998, the
United States Rev. Leroy archdiocese settled with the family for $20,000.

where the abuse occurred, and was reassigned to three
parishes over 12 years. He was forced to resign after a
new allegation of abuse arose in March, 2002.

An allegation of abuse was raised against Wolken in
March 2002. The case has been forwarded to the

Beine was arrested in late March, 2002 on three counts
of sexual misconduct involving a child (he is accused
of exposing himself to two young brothers, ages 9 and

Archdiocese paid $110,000 in the late 1990s to settle

Rev. Herek was accused of abusing an altar boy in the
1990s. In June 2002, a jury awarded the man (now age
23) and his mother $800,000 in damages. The Omaha
Archdiocese admitted negligence in supervising the
United States Rev. Daniel priest, and was forced to pay the settlement. Herek was
(NE) Herek 294 previously convicted in 1998 on charges of child
pornography and sexual assault of a child (for abuse
that occurred between 1992 and 1997). He served two
and one-half years in prison and then spent additional
time in a mental health center.
In 2002, authorities charged Roberts with two counts of
"gross lewdness," two counts of "using a minor to

against him. Roberts denies all charges. He was
removed from his church position in January, 2002.
In February 2002, the diocese of Manchester gave
prosecutors the names of 14 priests accused of abusing

In 1985, the victim first disclosed to officials in the
United States Rev. James T. Diocese of Paterson that Hanley had sexually abused

1986, "once the diocese had a reasonable standard of
information," according to a spokeswoman for the
diocese. The victim was paid $241,000 in a 1987
settlement that bought his silence. He broke that
agreement in March 2002 to speak of his experience.
Law enforcement authorities were not notified until the
statute of limitations had expired.
The Diocese of Paterson, New Jersey placed Rainforth
Father Thomas on leave after he was accused of sexually abusing a

A former student accused Flavin, a monk at Delbarton
School, of sexually molesting him between 1978 and

Flavin went to work in the Diocese of Paterson, and
officials there were not told of the abuse.
In 1971, Father Archuleta invited a 14-year-old boy
named Eddie Baros on a trip to Washington, DC. Baros
says Archuleta fondled him throughout the trip. In
United States Father Marvin 1994, Baros sued Archuleta; the case was settled for an
(NM) Archuleta 306 undisclosed amount. Archuleta was supposed to be
removed as a priest and reassigned to administrative
church work. ABC News found him working as a
priest in Mexico City in 2002.

In 1996, three nuns reported the abuse of adolescent

In 1990, Hebert was accused of sexually abusing a
teenage boy during a camping trip. Police did not

allegations and reassigned to an administrative
position.
Two women who allege they were sexually abused by
O'Doherty in the late 1970s brought suit against the
priest, his church, and the Diocese of Ogdensburg in
April 2002. Four other women claim abuse by

Paquin was first removed from parish work in 1990,

$500,000. The church recommended that Paquin be
removed in 1994, but in 1997 he was reinstated under
the condition that he have no contact with minors. He
was assigned to work as a hospital chaplain in 1998,
but was removed in 2000 after additional complaints of
abuse (which had occurred in the 1970s and 1980s)
arose. In May 2002, Paquin was indicted on three
counts of rape of a child.
In 2002, a former seminarian came forward with
allegations that Kavanagh made inappropriate and
abusive gestures towards him between 1978 and 1983,
while the accuser was attending seminary. The accuser

Kavanagh was ordered to step down as chief fundraiser
for his archdiocese and as pastor of his parish. He
denies the allegations. The accuser is considering filing

Lyons was accused in May 2002 of sexual misconduct

Msgr. Placa was accused of sexually abusing a high
school student in the mid 1970s, when he served as
dean in charge of student discipline at a preparatory
seminary. The victim registered a formal complaint
when prosecutors contacted him in the spring of 2002.

Placa had been serving on a diocesan panel that

investigated allegations of clerical sex abuse. A grand
jury is currently reviewing Placa's treatment of other
sex abuse cases. Placa was removed from the sex abuse
panel in April of 2002 and was suspended from all
pastoral duties in June 2002.
A Catholic school principal alleged in 2002 that Rev.
Thompson used "sexually explicit language" to
intimidate her. She claims that Thompson was sexually
involved with an 18-year-old-man and that he misused
United States Rev. John church funds. When approached about his
(NY) Thompson 322 indiscretions, Thompson allegedly made derogatory
and harassing remarks to the principal. She has filed a
$5 million lawsuit against Thompson, Queens Vicar
Msgr. James Spengler, and Brooklyn Bishop Thomas
Daily. Rev. Thompson was forced to resign when the
allegations arose.
The mother of two boys who where were molested by
Fr. Casey wrote to Bishop Matthew Clark in 1998,
after learning that Casey was living at a rectory and

was teaching religion classes to children. The woman

claims that nothing was done in response to her request
to prohibit Casey's access to children. Casey died in
2000.
On New Year's Day, 2000, Udegbulem, a visiting
priest from Nigeria, allegedly sodomized and raped a
woman in Brooklyn. The victim reported the abuse to
church officials at the time, but did not alert state
authorities. The case was reopened in 2002 when the
Diocese turned over records to the police in the wake
United States Rev. Cyriacus of the current abuse crisis. Udegbulem was charged in
(NY) Udegbulem 324 June 2002 with 10 counts of rape and sodomy. After
the initial incident, the diocese of Brooklyn dismissed
Udegbulem and reported the case to his superior in
Nigeria. Although he was expected to return to Nigeria,
he went to Texas, where he worked in the church
health center in the Diocese of Laredo. In June 2002,
he was arrested for groping a woman there. 325

Haight is accused of abusing a 12-year-old boy while
serving as a hospital chaplain. The diocese of Albany
paid nearly $1 million to settle this case in 1997. It also

settlement. Haight received treatment after the first
allegation in 1989 and returned to the ministry. He was
removed from pastoral duties after the 1997 incident.
