EXPERIMENT 1

MEASUREMENT OF RESISTANCE, DC CURRENT, AND DC VOLTAGE

OBJECTIVE: To learn how to measure DC current, DC voltage and resistor values and to learn how to use multimeters.

PRELIMINARY WORK: Write the color codes of 3-, 4-, and 5-band resistors. Give an example for each of them. Also solve the circuit given in the Procedure. Prepare the work in your own handwriting using maximum two A4-size paper.
INTRODUCTION: Measuring Resistances: 1. NEVER TRY TO MEASURE RESISTANCE WHEN THE RESISTOR IS CONNECTED TO A CIRCUIT 2. Turn on the power. 3. Push 2 W button among the function buttons.

4. Connect the two terminals of the resistor to the rightmost inputs, one end to HI, the other end to LO. 5. Read the resistance from the display.

Measuring DC Voltages: ( Multimeter is connected in parallel with the element ) 1. Turn on the power. 2. Push DC V button among the function buttons. 3. Connect the lower polarity terminal to the LO jack at the rightmost corner. 4. Connect the higher polarity terminal to the HI jack. 5. Read the voltage from the display.

Measuring DC Currents: ( Multimeter is connected in series with the element ) 1. NEVER CONNECT THE METER IN PARALLEL WITH AN ELEMENT, OR BETWEEN THE TERMINALS OF A SOURCE. 2. Turn on the power. 3. Push Shift button and the DC V button to switch to DC I function.

4. Make a break in the branch in which the current is to be measured and connect the multimeter in between. Make sure that the direction of the current will be into the I jack and out of the LO jack of the rightmost input terminals. 5. Read the current

PROCEDURE:

1. Choose R1 = 47

, R2 = 100

, R3 = 220

, R4 = 470

2. Measure the resistances of these resistors using the multimeter and fill out Table 1. 3. Experimental Circuit:

3.1. Before connecting the power supply to the circuit, turn it on and adjust it to 10 V DC. ( X and Y points are not connected) 3.2. Always check your circuit to make sure you set it up correctly.

4. Current Measurements: 4.1. Adjust the multimeter to read DC current. 4.2. Make the connections of the multimeter by first breaking open the connection between A and B and inserting the multimeter between A and B. 4.3. Plug in the + terminal connection to connect the power supply to the circuit. 4.4. Read out the current I1 of R1 and write it down intoTable-2. 4.5. Unplug the + terminal connection without turning the power supply off. 4.6. Insert the current meter between C and D after disconnecting it from the points A and B. 4.7. Patch up the connection between the points where the multimeter was connected. 4.8. Plug in the + terminal connection of the power supply.

4.9. Read out the current 4.10. Repeat steps 4.6 to 4.10 with the current meter inserted between F and G, and then between H and J. 4.11. Unplug the + terminal connection without turning the power supply off. 4.12. Disconnect the multimeter and patch up the open circuit.

5. Voltage Measurements:

5.1 Adjust the multimeter to read DC volts. 5.2 Connect its terminals to points K and L. 5.3 Connect power supply 5.4 Read the voltage and write it into Table 2. 5.5 Repeat steps 5.2 to 5.4 to measure the voltages between M and N, P and Q, and S and T.

6.

Solve the circuit numerically using the measured values of the resistances to find;

IR1, IR2, IR3, IR4, VR1, VR2, VR3 and VR4 and write your results into Table 2. 7. Resistance of your body between your two hands.

7.1. Turn the multimeter to measure resistance. Write your results into Table 3. 7.2 Hold one lead in each hand between your thumb and finger to read your resistance. 7.3. Tighten your hold and read your resistance again. 7.4. Wet your fingers and measure your resistance again.
