Projects Wood warehouse and workshop

In the project for a new storage deposit and laboratory for a lumber company, built in the German region of Allgu, Baumsclager & Eberle has refined a compositional logic based on the exaggerated reiteration of an identical element and of the same material, to achieve the result of a unified, strongly identifying organism. From the type of client and the functional program, the architects have drawn suggestions for creating a building that is both a lumber storage deposit and the formal representation of such. The figure of a pile of boards stacked or lying one against another, accomplished by the dense modular scansion of the facade in larch wood cornices, designs a clear-cut profile of the pre-Alpine landscape of Bohen, creating an object which plays on very complex scale relationships, both with the natural context in which it is inserted and with the type of user to which it is destined. The contemporary building expresses the need

to go beyond, in our culture, the natural-artificial dialectics to achieve a better understanding of todays world. The work of Baumsclager & Eberle evokes the statute of artifice, assuming a close relationship of complementarity with the landscape. There is no imitation of nature, but the use of references, fragments of natural materials which strike the sensitivity of the spectator. Nature is an architectural material like concrete or steel, able to destabilize the manner of distinguishing between natural and artificial, giving rise to new hybrid artifacts in which constructive spirit and expressive potentiality are mingled and blended. The warehouse becomes, on the scale of the landscape, a great wooden container which floats, suspended on a transparent base, among the hills that design the profile of the surrounding countryside. Simultaneously, on a smaller scale, appears the element, whose repe-

tition gives rise to the desired effect: a cornice made of larch wood, simply reproduced in succession infinite times, to design a facade that is compact when observed foreshortened, permeable to the light when viewed from the front. On the two shorter sides the outdoor setting literally enters the building through two great glass panels, forming a sort of tunnel through which space flows freely. The same wooden element which on the main fronts constitutes a powerful filter, defining the building as a massive parallelepiped, when turned onto the two shorter sides, offers a completely different reading of the same structure. The volume is hollow, emptied, there is no separation between exterior and interior, there is no obstacle, but on the contrary, the landscape is completed in the building and vice versa. The architecture of Baumsclager & Eberle shows a tendency toward objectification, which mani-

fests itself through the production of non-scale objects that act as real spatial devices within the broadened panorama of contemporary reality. The architectural product, as a fragment of reality, a constituted and recognizable entity, takes on an objectified value, insofar as it possesses an identifiable and logical, and thus describable, sphere. The two architects pass from construction to composition and from the latter to arrangement, substituting for an inventory of sectional forms, a series of actions applicable to a totally malleable matter. In this sense, the choice of a material, wood, and of an operation, modular repetition, become structural conditions for the development of a project. The resulting image has no symbolic pretensions, establishes a dialogue with the real elements around it through spontaneous associations, relationships of similarity, dissonance, re-composition of a fragmented figure, citation of shapes and colors. The landscape as panorama has meaning only as object for the organization of the scene, object of subdivision or framing. In todays culture the fragmentation of the unitary image of the panorama proclaims the impossibility of representing a dynamic space, in continuous expansion, through an absolute, totalizing gaze. Only a plurality of partial, multiple, autonomous visions will make it possible to grasp the sense of a reality in rapid transformation. The wooden cornice of Baumsclager & Eberle, used in improper manner, not only selects a landscape that is no longer static nor unified, but amplifies the possible visions and interpretations of the very object to which it gives form.
