All of us know , how great a performer kamal is.

But, there are few instances where, his lateral thinking has really impressed me. Many of us might have failed to notice such trivial points , which reflect his genius. I will start with an example. If others can add on , that would be great.

Film - Michael Madana Kamarajan. Just , recollect the names of the 4 villians - Nagesh , Jaishanker , Nasser , Delhi ganesh AND and see what each name means. DHARMARAJ ---- The King of Dharma , {shown as a crooked , wicked politician} SATYAMOORTHY - -- The figure of truthfulness { shown as a corrupt liar lawyer} NALLASIVAM --- A good ascetic { shown as a wicked murderer} ANBARASU --- One who is a king in showereing affection and love { shown as an arrogant rich wrong doer }

Another intelligent piece from INDIAN. credit to Shankar and Kamal. Many of u might have observed this too. Senapathy { Indian Thatha } tells manisha koirala that he sacrificed his Moustache for the sake of his baby boy Chandru as it used to hurt him while kissing. In the last scene, after killing Chandru, Senapathy calls up the Police from some unknown foreign location. Here, he is dressed in full suite and very interestingly, he is seen to sport a moustache.-- a very subtle piece of direction

In HEY RAM, RECOLLECT the scene where Kamal half heartedly agrees to go and see Vasundara das . As the car enters the agraharam { Brahmin households near the temple } , Kamal sees the temple elephant with the Thirunamam on its forehead. In a flash , his mind goes back to the Calcutta riots where he would have seen an elephant with its mahout { Yaanaippagan } dead. The elephant would be deserted , ready to go on a rampage with nobody to control, nobody to guide , nobody to take it to where it belonged . Kamal would have been in exactly the same state after his wife's brutal death and would have gone on a killing spree. Then , immediately, his mind comes back to the present, and he again stares at the temple elephant , which has been "Iyengarised" by the temple authorities.

Avai Shanmugi : In "Rukhu Rukhu " song some lines will end with the word PANDI, "Pandi" will be kamal's name in that movie.... Ex: thunukulum irupandi thurumbilum irupandi....................

Anbe Sivam: Ever wondered how KAMAL managed to wear such a big and thick glass the power of the specs was +10 it seems...... our sir wore a -10 contact lens and then wore this +10 glass... Madavan told this in one interview.....

Anbae Sivam.... Kamal would tell Madhavan that he doens't have one leg...in the next scene he lies down on the floor (in the hotel room) and if you notice carefully the length of his two legs would be different....all these requires minute attention but still he does it...

his is from the film GUNA............a song sequence...the beauty of this song is that even if u dont watch the full film and watch the song u can understand about what the film is......the song is PARTHA VIZHI PARTHA PADI...........this song starts with abirami crossing kamal in temple.....he will go behind her.......he wil say a dialogue that '''ITHU ABIRAMIYA?'''''...........the visual will poetically say that """"YA SHE IS YOUR ABIRAMI"""""........... 1..his head hits on a bell which indicates that she is abirami. 2..his hand hits on a hand board which will rotate and point out in the direction of the her which is also a indication. 3.. A cloth will fly in air showing sun light on kamal,,,,showing that his darkness is removed.. 4..when he stands in queue,the security will say stand in line by showing his hand towards her...he takes it as that he says she is the one whom you are searching for. 5..when he stands before her to recieve laddu from her she will say wait for a minute with her hand...it shows lord abirami is blessing him in the form of her..

only becaus of these reasons he is stubborn that she is abirami...........

in the climax kamal says to nasser naan oru tool..ayutham..kathir aruthavudanae aruvaala keela vachuranum..aani adichavidanae suthiyaiyum atha thaan cheiyanum both sre the symbol of communism.. hammer and a aruvaa..

Film - MAHANADHI

The story tells us about the ups and downs in a man's life and equates it with how a river flows thru mountains and plains , has floods and droughts , sometimes flows out of course and finally becomes calm and joins the sea.

So, all characters in the movie , who are shown as good natured people have names of rivers.

KRISHNASWAMY { kamal } Narmada --- first wife Yamuna ------- Sukanya Godavari ----- SN lakshmi { mother in law} Kaveri ---- daughter Barani ------------ son Punjabakesan ---- Poornam viswanathan { Punjab = 5 rivers} KAMALHASSAN is a "mahanadhi " , when compared to the small ponds and drainage gutters around him.

Anbae Sivam.... In this movie during the bus accident scene a dog would be targeted by the locals and would get hurt in his ears and will start bleeding (you can notice while it runs)....once Kamal recovers and goes back to the same place the dog would have a bandage in the ear....in kamal sir movies even dog gets so much importance.....

Something from VIRUMANDI - most of u would have observed already. When the temple pusaari gives false vaakkumoolam in the court against Kamal, he removes and hides the gold ring which Annalaxmi would have givent to him as marriage kaanikkai.

Movie KURUDIPPUNAL Of the 2 spies sent by Arjun and Kamal, the first commits suicide. Kamal and Arjun see his dead body in the mortuary. The doctor says " Heavy dose of cyanide poisoning". Arjun places his left hand near the dead man's face and starts feeling sad because both the spies were very close to Arjun. Kamal brings his hand close to Arjun's hand and everyone expects that he will say some consoling words to Arjun. But, Kamal sees the watch on Arjun's hand and immediately asks " Trichy train ethana manikku ? " .{ As per the spy's info, some important terrorist would be boarding that particular train.

In the movie Guna.... When Abirami escapes, she uses a hacksaw blade to cut down the chain.Once Kamal comes in he realizes that Abirami has escaped and he immediately takes out the hacksaw from the ground and touches his cheeks with that. This is to identify how much heat is still left in the blade...if the blade is hot then she might not have gone for a longer distance...too good

Scene1 --------When people started attacking Kamal's office the watchman of kamal's office steals Kamal's wrist watch.

Scene2 --------Kamal wants to meet Dhanush (V.M.C Haneefa) so he comes to Dhanush's house and tells that watchman that he wants to meet Dhanush.The watchman could not recognize Kamal initially.He sees the time in his watch and he immediatly starts fighting with Kamal by asking Oh Neeya ? The watchman - Same watchman from scene 1 The watch - The one that he has stolen from Kamal in scene1

Thenali -ku elam baiyam thaan..:) All must have enjoyed the movie Thenali ( no doubts) It goes on this way, Kamalji enters Jairam's family and He happens to use Jairam's shirt and pant. He constantly adjusts the pant.. (Try watching the song Aiyo da)
Movie KURUDIPPUNAL When Kamal comes back home in the middle of the night after not being able to trace Nasser's hide out , he comes and takes a shower bath. We can notice that he is covered with dirt and filth from head to toe. That is an indirect portrayal that he has betrayed his Nation and a true friend Arjun for his personal reasons. So, he washes the dirt , becomes clean and the very next day , sets out fearlessly to kill Nasser and company. A simple, subtle touch ....

Movie VIRUMANDI According to the original legend , Virumandi helps paechiamma to sustain against peikkaman. But, he starts demanding cattle flesh. So , by trick , Virumandi is captured in a well and only in "aadi velli" he is let out of the well to take his meat. Similarly , when the CK patti people kill all the Nallamma naikkanur people, the lady with the child is hiding inside the well .{ Kondarasu's wife} . kamal helps to shield her and only because of this , the lady and her child are alive.

But in the court , Kamal gives false statements and saves himselves and others including Kothalan. The affected lady cries " Kanathukkulle irundappo nallavanaa irunda , ippo ippadi maarittaye". Thats a subtle link of the story to the title .....

Apoorva Sagodarargal Before the murder of Jayashankar....Raja kamal will be trying to enter in the same manner as what Appu Kamal did.He will pull out the rope which is tied to a big wood block at the other end. Janakaraj and Shivaji comes to that place,they will start laughing and say to Kamal "Hands Up".Kamal leaves the rope and the wooden block hits both Janakaraj and Shivaji...and Kamal enters in. After this there will be two scenes where Janakaraj says to Kamal "Hands up"...one inside Jaishankar's house at the stair case,one where Appu Kamal rescues Raja from police...if you notice in both the scenes after saying "Hands Up" Janakaraj immediately looks up.. Just to ensure that there is no wooden block that will fall on them

APOORVA SAGOTHARAGAL again

Sethupathy {kamal} and Srividya argue about the name to be given to their kid. Kamal says APPADURAI {his dad's name } Srividya says Muthukkaruppan {Her dad's name} Shortly after this , Kamal is killed . Srividya escapes with one baby. And after 25 years, the movie comes to the present time , we are introduced to dwarf Kamal and not surprisingly, Srividya has fulfilled her dead husband's wish by naming her son as APPADURAI. Beautiful .......

MAHANADHI watch closely the scene where Kamal opens the new chit fund company. When the CHIEF GUEST { main villian} presents the cheque , Dhanush calls everybody to pose for a photograph. When the still is clicked , Dhanush's hand would be touching the cheque , as if he is the one receiving it.

From the left corner , kamal would be trying to reach out for it , but there will be few inches gap between the cheque and heis hand. Thats a subtle indication that in future also , Dhanush is going to double cross and cheat kamal.

Again in MAHANADHI, See the impact of Kamal's friend Sunder's visit to Thirunageswaram. In the few hours that he spends in Kamal's place, Kamal's mindset undergoes a sea change and he thinks feels jealous of city dwellers. This forms the foundation for VMC Haneefa to easily convince Kamal to shift base. 1 --- Kamal and family see a handycam for the first time 2 --- Kamal is embarassed to admit that there is no AC in his house 3 --- Sunder's wife hesitates to eat foods prepared in the house 4 --- Kamal's son gets tempted by the foreign chocolates 5 --- Kamal's daughter's english accent is made fun of 6 --- Kamal's son wants a Mercedes Benz instead of their Ambassador car 7 --- Sunder points out that the treatment being received by Kamal's mother-in-law for diabetes is primitive 8 - He also points out that kamal's wife would have died due to inefficiency of the doctor available there All this is shown in 4 to 5 minutes screen time !!!!!

Movie : Mahanadhi [One of my friends actually noticed this and said to me] Any event in the movie which was started after a nalla sagunam it doesnt work out. A total damage to such practices !!!

Similarly , in INDIAN , Senapathy being a freedom fighter names his kids as Chandra Bose and Kasturi, in respect of Netaji Subash and Kastur Bai Gandhi. The names could have just been Raja and Rani , but that does not happen in a Kamal movie.

In Panchathanthiram...

When they all meet at a function... where suddenly simran enters... and he gossips seperately with simran and ramya... when he's back ... oorvasi will ask him... " En Unga vai konala irukku ".. For that kamal will reply ... " Sariya shave pannale...OPTICAL ILLUSION ".. But if u watch clearly...Kamal's French Beard will not be perfect in that scene.. so , its not only the dialogue, even the beard had been taken care to coorelate with the dialogue...

Movie : kuruthipunal After Arjun's death kamal goes to record theatre to meet one of nasser's men .The Guy would be coming to meet his fiance .As the fiance watches the movie awaiting the guy , song in the background goes like "Odi vaa vennailave ".The guy spots his fiancee with a torchlight.

Indian...during the freedom struggle scenes if you notice carefully all the milestones would be mentioned in "Miles" and not "KiloMeteres".......it is evident that we used "miles" before independence...

Kamal's name is Guna in the movie 'Guna' and the interesting thing is, 'Gunaseelam' is a temple famous for curing mentally ill people.

Hey Ram I had bought the book which is the Malayalam translation of the screenplays "Hey Ram" and Mahanadi. In that the author tells that in Hey Ram, for the mantras which are chanted when Kamal renounces everything and cuts the sacred thread, Kamal had discussed with Kanchi Shankaracharya regarding them . And the seer advised him on what mantras are chanted for that purpose. What perfection!
The movie guna starts with pournami and as the movie progresses, moon was also shown at each quarters like waning crescent, new moon, waxing crescent etc and the climax ends on a pournami.

Dasavatharam Song---Kallaimattum kandal.....

There one is line in the song which goes like this "rajalakshmi naayagan sreenivaasanthaan sreenivaasan sei intha vishudaasan naan"

hey, in dasa trailer, when they show a glimpse of bush's office...they have a christmas tree nearby. it must be the scene before tsunami hits asia...that's semiotic clarification of dates for u!

PEARS SOAP CALENDAR. Guys have u noted in the film HEY RAM when kamal gets ready to kill gandhi in his tent he will look at a calendar of PEARS soap ...... that was a calendar of 1940's......... it will come just for only one shot..... for that he had borrowed the calendar from a museum of gandhi.
Another noteworthy scene in Vettaiyaadu. Kamal brings in some workers to dig out the ground where he strongly suspects that Prakash Raj's daughter has been buried by her murderers. The workers start digging very fast. Kamal says " HEY, Medhuva ...." Worker says " Saar , edaavadhu PORUL thenpatta , niruthiduvom" Kamal says " Inga PORUL eduvum irukkaadhu ...... Po .... " { He is about to say Ponam thaan irukkum} , but just holds back without completing the statement.

Also, watch for this gem in MAHANADHI. In "Sriranga ranganadanin ...." song , interlude music, Kamal and family are shopping in a saree store. Kamal's daughter takes a red coloured saree and asks him if this will be ok. kamal looks at her witha proud, smiling face and imeediately thinks about her resemblance to his wife who is no more ----- within 0.05 seconds, his expression changes to sorrow.

Tamizh cinema was in a state of crisis when there is a division between its workers as FEFSI union and tamizhnaadu thiraippada padaippaaligal koottamaippu. KH extended his full support naturally to FEFSI (due to KB's involvement in FEFSI) Hence in his movie KAATHALAA KAATHALAA there is a dialog which satires this FEFSI Vs Padaippaligal koottamaippu problem in a scene when prabudeva paints a picture kamal will say... nee padaippaali... naan thodaippaali

One more brilliance When TSUNAMI occurs...if you notice it carefully no other characters in the movie would use the word TSUNMAI except the Japaneese Kamal.... What a brilliant stuff....Normally Japanese people knew TSUNAMI as they encounter it very frequently and we indians came to know something like this only after that (ofcourse Thalaivar used in Anbae Sivam) but otherwise no one was aware of that word..

Nala Damayanti Kamal comes in the climax in this movie. He speaks in Palakkad Tamil. Then Madhavan says "Saar Palakkad thaan" to Geetu Mohandas. Kamal then says "Pa" varakkum correct thaan. The reason is he is actually from Paramakudi.
In the movie Indian when kamal is at urmila's house caught by manisha , argument follows between Urmila and manisha where both punch Kamal's eyes.He will shout eyes..then aish

In the flashback scene where Chandru Kamal fights with Senapathy and leaves the house, carefully read what is written on his T shirt " NOBODY HAS THE RIGHT TO TELL ME WHAT IS RIGHT".

In the scene where the doctor Nizhalgal Ravi, Police inspector, Village administrative officer ask for bribe from Senapathy to treat Kasturi, Nizhalgal Ravi is reading "INDIA TODAY" book

Instead of saying "Barathiyaar" solli irukkaar , he says SV Subbiah ( who acted as Bharathiyaar in KAPPAL OTTIYA THAMIZHAN ). This shows his mental instability in a funny, but effective way.

Anbe Sivam This is the scene when Kamal is travelling in the ambulance with maddy and the small boy who's on drips.. Kamal gets shocked on hearing that this guy's name is also Pavun and he exclaims in surprise.. And he says "Huh... adhu onnum illa paa, enakku oru pazhaya friend irundhaan.. irukkaan... " notice that he quickly changes it to irukkaan (present tense) from irundhaan (past tense) .. and stresses his tone on the former.. even though his friend had died in the accident
we know how thalaivar gives importance to character's names in his movies, even for some one who is doing a small role gets so much importance eg: Nitin Satya who drinks poison in vasool raja...his name is neelakandan in that movie

Semma point. The guy who is using 500 ruppes note for paper boats to please his daughter, does not spend a single 500 rupees to save her life inspite of the fact that that is a crunch period.

When Mohanlal says about the bullet proof jackets to his subbordinates...if u have noticed, he would say, this is the new bullet proof jackets, thanks to Late Mr.Karkare ....Mr.Hemant Karkare was the ATS chief who died in 26 / 11 terror attack in Mumbai....there was a big debate in the parliment on the quality of bullet proof jacket he was using..

even in VASOOL RAJA MBBS... in th scene in th hostel.. th hilarious scene of room number 7... th guy calld swaminathan... n aandavar w'd say GOPINATH... n fa tht ji 'd say like naan onnu sonna adhukku edhir pesakoodaadhu,.. fa tht swaminathan 'd say like swaminathan or gopinathan.. bt cn i call ma dad as saambunathan,,, frm th nxt scene onwrds.. aandavar 'd call him as saaambu mavanae
