World History Name: Jae-Lim Shin 1. In what ways was the League successful after World War I ?

Unsuccessful ? The league was successful in resolving several disputes peacefully. For example it was successful in settling disputes between Sweden and Finland, and prevented a war from erupting over a border between Greece and Bulgaria. The league was also successful in making some social and economic successes. It brought social issues into public and provided aid to needy states. However, the league was also unsuccessful in many areas. Although the League dealt with many issues, it lacked the troops and power of its own. For instance, the League could not force Poland to leave during the conflict between Poland and Lithuania over the seizure of a Lithuania town. Also the League couldnt stop Italy from seizing Fiume, and the war between Russia and Poland, France and Germany and Japan and Manchuria. 2. Yes, I personally think that the terms of the Versailles Treaty was part of a major cause World War II. I think that the Versailles Treaty was too harsh on Germany. For instance I think that it asked Germany to pay too much compensation, which took years for Germany to repay. It caused anger in Germans mind, therefore when a powerful ruler Adolf Hitler came to power and called for German lands to be returned to the hands of Germany, the German people welcomed and followed him, 3. However during the Cold War, U.S tried to adopt a multilateral approach for Americas foreign policy. 5. What is Wilsonian thought? Why do some support it and some oppose it ? The Wilsonian thought is the idea of multilaterialism and collective security. Some people support this Wilsonian thought because according to the WIlsonism United States participated in regional and world organizations promoting free trade, supported nations and ethnic groups seeking statehood and protection from injustice. In conclusion, the supporters of Wilsonism claim that united states has assisted in reducing conflict around the world. However, some oppose Wilsonism saying that Wilsons ideas have continued to fail because humans are predisposed towards power politics rather than peaceful diplomacy. Also they claim that the United States should instead focus on its mounting domestic problems, and protecting its citizens.
