Time
How To Tell Time In Russian The most difficult thing about telling time in Russian is to pick correct noun forms for hours and minutes. When telling time, Russians either use 24-hour time or 12-hour time with the words "", "", "" or "" added.

Here's How: 1. To tell exact time, say a cardinal number such as , , , etc. + // + hour / hour / hours + straight. 2 If the cardinal number is 1, use the word 3 If the cardinal number is 2, 3 or 4, use the word . 4 If the cardinal number is 5 to 12, use the word . For example, (3:00). 5 When there remains less than half an hour till the beginning of a certain hour, you say + the number of minutes remained + ((minutes / minute )/) + the hour that will come. 6- If the number of minutes remained is 1 or 21, use the singular genitive - form of the numeral, namely , one, twenty-one. You should add the word minutes to such numbers. Instead of 15 minutes use the word quarter 7 If the number of minutes is other than named in step 6, use the plural genitive form of the numeral. You should add the word to such numbers. 8 To name the hour that will come, say the word for 1 hour and correspondent cardinal numbers alone for others, namely , , , etc. 9 For example, (1:55); quarter ten (9:45). 10 When there passed less than half an hour since the beginning of a new hour, you say the number of minutes passed + // minute / minutes / minute + the next hour. 11 For the number of minutes passed, use a cardinal number in the nominative

12 If the number of minutes passed is 1 or 21, use the word .. feasible 13 If the number of minutes passed is 2, 3, 4, 22, 23 or 24, use the word 14 -If the number of minutes passed is 5 and more (except 21, 22, 23 and 24), use the word . Instead of 30 minutes use the word half. Instead of 15 minutes use the word . Quarter 15 To name the next hour, say for 1 hour, for 2 hours, for 3 hours, fourth for 4 hours, fifth for 5 hours, etc. 16 For example, Twenty-two minutes of the ninth (8:22); (9:30); (9:15) Tips: 1. The stressed vowels are underlined in Russian words. 2. If you want to designate the time of the day, add at the end of the time phrase the word for morning time, for noon and day time, for evening time, and for night time. For example, second (1:05 pm); (1:05 am).

Noun Gender and Number

There are three genders in Russian: masculine, feminine and neuter. You can usually determine the gender of a noun by its ending. Here are some basic rules, although exceptions exist: Masculine gender:
Word Ending in a consonant in -

home tea

Feminine gender:
Word Ending in -a in - in -

picture
Family

history

Neuter gender:
Word A Face People Showing while .o Plate e Attention Time Ending in -o in -e in - in -

Nouns ending in the soft sign - can be either masculine or feminine: (day masculine), (life - feminine). The best way to tell the gender of such nouns is to memorize it as you progress with your Russian language study. Remember that there are no definite or indefinite articles in Russian. The meaning of English articles "a", "an" and "the" is determined from the context and some other means, including word order, the use of plurals, demonstrative pronouns and cases.

The number of nouns

English plurals often end in -s. In Russian, there are more endings to make plurals. They are all summed up in the table:

Noun type masculine ending in a hard consonant; feminine ending in -a any nouns ending in -, -, - masculine and feminine with the stem ending in , -, -x, -, -, -, -, neuter ending in -o neuter ending in -e

Ending for plural - - - -a -

Example - - e - - - - - a o -

table - table street - the street dver - doors

Land - Land the knife - knives foot - feet window - okna more - the sea ,Some nouns are always singular. These are nouns that designate

substances , (oxygen, copper), food products , (sugar, flour), a block of objects (furniture), some actions (hunting), feelings , (love, health), sorts of fabric (velvet), medicine (aspirin), some vegetables and berries , (potato, carrots).

Agreement with nouns

You will have to know the genders and plural forms of nouns because they influence the use of adjectives and pronouns. The basic rule is that Russian adjectives agree with the nouns they describe in gender, number and cases. Take a look at how the adjective (beautiful) changes depending on the gender and number of the noun which it describes (in the Nominative case): :
Gender/number of noun masculine singular: feminine singular: neuter singular: Change in adjective beautiful ball

beautiful ball
plural: (all genders)

beautiful Girl beautiful sea beautiful balls beautiful Girls beautiful Sea
