Personal Evaluation ......................................................................................................................... 27

Criterion A: Investigation

Project stimulus
Can we make a short film using different kinds of shots and editing the film by using Vegas movie studio? Our project is to research, design about short film and create it in a group, which does not include any spoken language. Short films are usually used for advertising, or most of them has some meaningful messages and funny. You can also learn through films so probably that is why it is so popular to use videos in our society.

Central questions
1. 2. 3. 4. What techniques are we going to use in Sony Vegas? What kind of shots are there in filming? How long should be the short film is? What kind of equipments do we need for filming?

Research into the Grammar of Film

1. Two shot A shot of two people together 2. Establishing shot Its an opening shot. Its a general view as an extreme long shot used to set the scene 3. Subjective treatment Its a treatment when the viewer is treated as a participant for example when the camera is filming directly or when it is imitating the viewpoint or movement of a character. 4. Objective treatment This treatment involves treating the viewer as an observer. For example privileged point of view which includes watching from omniscient vantage points. 5. Synching The sound recorded at the time of the filming of the movie. 6. 16:9

Film Making MYP year 5 Technology Its a ratio of standard format of the screen width: length 7. Matched cut

Nancy Lee

Its a relationship between the shots may make the change seem more smooth. This cut is usually made on an action because the viewers eye is absorbed by the action the character is unlikely to notice the movement of the cut itself 8. Jump cut Its a cut when you switch from one scene to another 9. Motivated cut This cut makes the viewers want to see something which is not visible.

Research: Filming
Aim for very short films is about 9-5 or 10-12 minutes long. However, the rough cut of short film is about 60 minutes long.

To film a short movie, you need lots of equipments for that which is like: Digital Editing Workstation Editing Software Portable Audio Recorder Microphones Muffs/ Windscreens Boom pole Steady cam Lighting

This research will help me and my group to find what we exactly need for filming.

By using this program, I will be able to edit my film much quicker and easier. I can also polish my film by using some effects

Film Experiment
For our Film making project, we did an experiment on blade runner. From this experiment I have learnt that to film something, you must need actors, director, camera man, sound, clapper and the lighting. Firstly, the actors have to get in their positions, and when they are ready the director needs to check out with camera man, sound and the lighting. When everything is ready, the clapper has to clap and the actors have to start their scene with directors action sign.

Film analysis

Name of media: Teeth: Source: Internet Video: Use of shots: Extremely long shot to show the boat in the middle of the lake (see) Long shot to show two old men on the boat Mid shot to show old mans angry face Comments: Its a very nice film with many different kinds of angle shots. Looks very realistic and I like how they used old men as main character

Objectives
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

My film should include at least 3 different angle shots The film should be less than 6 minutes long It shouldnt include any swearing words The story should be something meaningful The film must look realistic

Testing Plan
Test Number 1 Description I will show my film to three people and ask them if they noticed different angle shots By timing our film, Ill make sure that its less than 6 minutes long I will show it to other people to check if there is any swearing words I will ask people to tell me if the film is meaningful and has some message in it. Reason for test By having more than 3 different angle shots, It will make the film much more interesting Short films are usually around 5-6 minutes and if its too long, the audience might get bored Audience might get offended if there are swearing words Expected Outcome People will notice that there are more than 3 different angle shots A film that is about 34 minutes long

A film without any swearing words

If the film doesnt include any meaningful message, it might look kind of pointless Its just visually unpleasing to watch a film that doesnt look realistic

A film that gives you meaningful message such as littering

I will ask people to tell me if the film looks realistic

A film that other people think its professional

Directors Objectives
o o o o o o My film will contain no spoken language as this is a requirement for the task. There will be a maximum of two main characters in my film because my research has shown me this is a preferred element in short films. My film will run for approximately 2-3 minutes as my research has shown this time frame is used in the more effective short films. My film will have an introduction, complication and resolution because this structure is used in most short films. My film will be shot in colour as the interview I conducted proved this feature was preferred. My film will contain a moral as majority of the individuals I interviewed preferred this element in short films.

My Testing plan
Test Number 1 Description I will show my film to three people and ask them if they noticed different angle shots By timing our film, Ill make sure that its less than 6 minutes long Reason for test By having more than 3 different angle shots, It will make the film much more interesting Short films are usually around 5-6 minutes and if its too long, the audience might get bored Audience might get offended if there are swearing words If the film doesnt include any meaningful message, it might look kind of pointless Expected Outcome People will notice that there are more than 3 different angle shots A film that is about 3-4 minutes long Actual Outcome & Notes It has more than three different angle shots such as CU, mid shot and establishing shot. My film is about 2 minutes long which is less than 6 minutes however, I think its a bit short. My film does not include any swearing words My film does give some message that you shouldnt cheat in your life.

I will show it to other people to check if there is any swearing words I will ask people to tell me if the film is meaningful and has some message in it.

Personal Evaluation
Criterion A Investigate For creating a short film project, I have started off by doing some researches. Firstly, the most important thing was to research about what short films are usually used for and what equipment we need. I have also analyzed one of the films that we watched in class, and I also did some editing experiment by editing the film that our class has produced. We used Sony Vegas, which is an editing program for making films. From Investigating, I have learnt what kind of angle shots are there in filming and learnt how to use Sony Vegas. I found it kind of difficult to use Sony Vegas however, by doing some experiments, my skill has improved slightly. The thing I could have changed for my investigating part is that, I wish I could have analyzed more films so I could compare the different use of angle shots.

Criterion B- Design For my design section, I have produced my ideas, storyboards and the screenplay. Firstly, I wrote down 3 different ideas to choose the best one out of it. For my storyboards, I have chosen my two favorite ones however, when I got to write my screenplay, I wasnt sure which one I should use. Neither of my ideas were great however, one sounded little bit plain and the other one seemed like it was going to be a long film so I just decided to use the plain but meaningful idea. I found it difficult to write a screenplay because you have to think about every single angle shot you are going to use and you dont know which place you are going to film yet it was a bit challenging.

27

Film Making MYP year 5 Technology

Nancy Lee

However, from this section I have learnt that screenplays are always written in courier font 12 and the characters name should be in bald. Criterion C- Plan The film that got chosen was Mikaleas The Clicker so for this section, we basically copied and pasted her screenplay and wrote our own decomposition out. After, we were finished with our decomposition we got into a group, and produced a Gantt chart for our next 6 hours of filming lesson. We have also planned the resources that we are going to be used.

Criterion D- Create The most fun part of the project, we started to film our movie. The thing went well in this part is that, everyone in our group co-operated together and the directors were always coming up with good suggestions. The difficult thing was when we recorded our film on different day, the lighting was slightly different, so I had to used lots of white balancing on Sony Vegas. From this experiment I have learnt how you can record the film in different angle shots and I got to know Sony Vegas better. If we had more time, I would like to edit my video more realistic and cool.
