TEKS Lesson Title Objective

111.13. Mathematics, Grade 1 (1.5 D) Kindergarten Algebra for 1st grader (1.5) Patterns, relationships, and algebraic thinking. The student recognizes patterns in numbers and operations. The student is expected to: (D) Use patterns to develop strategies to solve basic addition and basic subtraction problems. The student will be able to : Recognize patterns and relationships with like and unlike terms/variables using fruits, vegetables, animals and other familiar objects and to add like values as a pre introduction to working with the variables x and Y and equations. The student will be able to identify simple equations, add like and unlike variables with a mastery of 85% Glossary/Vocabulary: Algebra, Equation, Unlike term, Like Term, Variable, Patterns, Relationships,

Direct Instruction (I do)

The teacher will display pairs, single, triple and quadruple items of familiar fruits, vegetables, play animals as well as some that are unknown (visual display via smartboard). She/he will then ask the students to identify the items and those items that cannot be identified. Those students who cannot identify their item will be given a large cut out alphabet with the letter of the items as well as a large X or Y. The teacher will explain that when we dont know what the item is we can use the first letter of the word that the item begins with as well as explain what a variable is and how it is used. Next the teacher will ask all of the like fruit, vegetables, animals to stands in one corner, and then he/she will ask the other students to stand in other corners. Once all of the like groups are together, then she will ask only one student with a totally different fruit, vegetable or animal to stand as well. The teacher will count all of the apples (4 apples); all of the oranges (3 oranges; all of the bananas (3), and finally the one plum. The teacher will ask the students Can we make an equation out of all of the (fruit, vegetables, and animals)? Now lets the equation and call for all of the like groups. Since the plum is alone, he/she will be placed at the end of the equation. All of the students will count aloud and substitute the first letter of the word that is represented: 4A (apples) + 3O (oranges) + 3B (bananas) + 1P (plum) Next the teacher will work with smaller groups of the same object (2 apples + 2 apples = 4 apples; 3 oranges + 1 orange = 4 oranges The teacher then explains how to substitute using an X or a Y and provides several examples for each learning style. The students will be placed in groups of three (3)

The teacher will pass out different kinds of objects and ask the students to count them and to make an equation out of the objects that they are given as he/she monitors the room. The teacher will ask the class to provide several suggestions as to how working with variables will be helpful and some of the ways people use variables and equations. She may ask the students if they are cooking and the recipe calls for an ingredient that they arent familiar with and they have to write it for someone else, how will they indicate 7 cups of an unknown ingredient (7x)? The students will be asked to select items from the table and make their own equations with and without x or y independently as the teacher walks around and informally monitors progress When the student finishes his/her work they will raise their hands to indicate a red ticket to indicate they need help or a green ticket to indicated they have finished and would like their work checked so they can leave or go to another activity. The teacher will informally make assessments and monitor the students progress and determine whether to reteach or to move on. She/he also determines if the lesson was too simple or too difficult and makes the appropriate next step. Real and Play fruits, Vegetables and toy animals, Smartboard Challenged or Special needs students will require assistance from the TA Students will be given real fruit/vegetables to eat and allowed to keep one play animal. They will also be given an activity sheet with different fruits, vegetables, and animals and asked how they would list the variable if it was not provided. An example would be Bear = B; Potatoes = P. The Students will also be given past related release test to answer for points or extra credit.
