C & I Learning Validation #1 Course # GADS 557: Supervision Date: July 2011 Outcome Indicators: 4.4, 4.5, 5.

1, 5.3, 5.6 The topic Supervision of Online Instructors was not a major topic in the course, but it was an important topic for me since I am in the IT program at Duquesne so the combination of both my IT degree and C&I certification may lead me in the direction of supervising online instructors. For this reason, I chose the topic of Supervising Online Instructors as a project topic to learn more about this area (5.1) Through the project and this course I learned 11 characteristics of effective online instructors including: (4.4, 4.5, 5.1, 5.6) Meets professional teaching standards established by a state licensing agency or has academic credentials in the field in which he/she is teaching Has prerequisite technology skills to teach online including skills Plans, designs, and incorporates strategies to encourage active learning, interaction, participation, and collaboration in an online environment Promotes success through regular feedback, prompt response, and clear expectations Models and encourages legal, ethical, and safe online behavior Has experienced online learning from the perspective of a student and demonstrates the ability to anticipate challenges and problems in the online classroom Understands and is responsive to students with special needs in the online classroom Creates and implements assessments in ways that assure validity and reliability Develops and delivers assessments, projects, and assignments that meet standards-based learning goals Uses data to modify instruction and guide student learning Collaborates with colleagues; networks with others involved in online education

During this class, I developed a presentation on these characteristics as well as some assessment tools which can be used that I will be able to reference when working in the field (4.4, 4.5, 5.1, 5.3). From these characteristics I learned the important qualities I should look for in the role of a supervisor of online instruction. In addition to the characteristic, the several evaluation tools I found can be used to evaluate online instructors on their competency and progress towards meeting the important characteristics.

C & I Learning Validation #2 Course # GADS 557: Supervision Date: July 2011 Outcome Indicators: 5.1 5.5 The Supervision class provided a practical experience of using the Clinical Supervision model. During class, I acted in the role of a teacher, a supervisor, and an observer (5.1). As a teacher, I taught a lesson to the class and another supervisor observed and evaluated me. As a Supervisor, I observed and evaluated a teacher (5.1, 5.3, 6.5). As an observer, I observed the process of another supervisor and teacher interacting (5.1, 5.3, 6.5). I learned the value of preobservation conferencing as well as post-observation is very valuable (5.3). A supervisor can learn whether a teacher is prepared and what/how they plan to teach during a pre-observation interview so that they may evaluate whether the objective has been met during the actual observation (5.1). The post-observation conference provides the opportunity for the teacher to reflect upon the lesson and the supervisor the opportunity to discuss strengths and weaknesses and offer suggestions and support (5.1, 5.3). This class has taught me the importance of the components of the Clinical Supervision model including planning & preparation, instructional delivery, classroom environment, and professionalism and gave me practice in evaluating the instructional delivery component of the model (5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4). I can apply this knowledge as a supervisor when observing teachers to make sure I evaluate all the important components as well as assist the teacher in professional growth.

C & I Learning Validation #3 Course # GADS 557: Supervision Date: July 2011 Outcome Indicators: 5.3, 6.5, 6.6 The Supervision course taught me effective and appropriate ways of communicating with teachers both verbally and in writing when in a supervisory role (5.3, 6.1, 6.5, 6.6). This course opened up much discussion about how to approach different situations and circumstances from interviewing to disciplinary action. I reviewed etiquette and practiced writing invitations to meetings of different types including an invitation to a meeting that could lead to disciplinary action (5.3, 6.5,6.6). I learned the OREO strategy that will be helpful to remember when conducting a post-observation conference which includes Offering something positive to start, Real life or situation references, Evaluation, Offer something positive to finish (5.3). In addition, it was reinforced that we should conduct efficient record keeping habits so that if a problem arises, I have the data to back up any claims or recommendations (6.5). These communication skills will be essential to me as a supervisor of curriculum and instruction. The skills I learned and the practice I completed during the course will provide me with samples to reference when I am working in the field and have a difficult situation to handle. Examples of how to organize and keep anecdotal notes and records have given me a basis to start from and ideas of how I might best organize myself in the future.

C & I Learning Validation #4 Course # GADS 557: Supervision Date: July 2011 Outcome Indicators: 5.1, 5.3, 6.1, 6.4, 6.5 During the supervision course, I completed an assignment that I felt was extremely beneficial to me as a curriculum and instructor supervisor. The assignment was to choose a teacher observation narrative that was at the grade level I currently work in or am comfortable with. I was to read the narrative of the observation and based on the narrative, I rated the teacher as Satisfactory or Needs Improvement on an evaluation check list (5.1, 6.5). I then took 3 of the deficiency areas and developed performance tasks that would prompt action on the part of the teacher and could result in satisfactory performance of the objectives (6.1, 6.4). For the activity, I wrote a performance objective for each deficiency area that would be measurable and developed about 3 activities for the teacher to engage in that would help her grow. Activities ranged from reading journal articles to looking into an online project and developing ways to integrate it into her lessons (6.1, 6.4). I felt this activity was particularly meaningful and relevant to what I will actually be doing as a curriculum and instructor and gave me to opportunity to explore some activities that would help a teacher improve (6.1, 6.4, 6.5). This activity provided me with experience in rating a teacher evaluation and identifying areas that are of greatest need of improvement (5.3, 6.1, 6.5). This course has also provided me the opportunity to view and learn about the uses for different standardized state evaluation forms which has been useful in helping me prepare for a future role as a supervisor.
