ABSTRACT: This documentation gives you an overview of Virtualization. It takes you through different types of Virtualization, it says about its features and uses in IT industry. KEYWORDS: Hypervisor, Host, Guest OS.

INTRODUCTION Virtualization is a means of slicing the physical hardware, for the use of multiple virtual machines running above it. Each virtual machine with different flavours of OS is managed by Hypervisor. It is a revolutionary step in IT industry. Virtualization has become most popular due to its reliability consistency, and stability in delivering the optimal performance.

DEFINITION Virtualization is a method of dividing the physical hardware and providing it to multiple logical machines know as virtual machines. Each virtual machine with different flavours of OS is managed by Hypervisor. Hypervisor is a software layer sits between the virtual machines and the physical hardware. Hypervisor controls and monitors the virtual machines use of memory, cpu and storage. Administrators can use this hypervisor to manage the entire activity of the virtual machines. Each virtual machine acts like a unique physical device (physical desktop or a physical Server), capable of running its own operating system. USE OF VIRTUALIZATION Virtualization can be used at technological and economical stand point. It can be used to get the better use of physical hardware resources. Major reasons for adopting virtualization at IT Industries include the desire to increase the efficiency in managing the server environment, controlling hardware sprawl and spending, and reducing the number of servers needed to run the production systems, allowing reuse of the hardware for other needs. These top three reasons why current IT industries have explored or adopted virtualization are all related to optimizing technology assets. With optimizing technology assets being a top technology concern for IT today, organizations need to turn to solutions systems that specifically address this need. Types of virtualization: Para-virtualization OS-level virtualization Para-virtualization Para-virtualization allows multiple operating systems to run on hardware at the same time by making more efficient use of system resources, such as processors and memory, through effective resource sharing. Here virtualization software known as hypervisor sits between the host hardware and the guest virtual machines. OS-level virtualization In this type of virtualization will need a host operating system to run. Here virtualization software will be installed above a host operating system on a physical machine. OS-level virtualization partitions the physical

machines resources at the operating system level. This means all the OS-level VMs share a single operating system kernel. Conclusion Considering the technology, ease of administration and optimizing technology assets, a small and medium business organization can adopt the Virtualization. According to a survey, More than eight out of 10 respondents (84%) report usage or consideration of virtualization technology. In fact, half of respondent organizations (49%) are currently using virtualization, 24% are considering virtualization for use in the next 12 months, and 11% are considering the technology for use more than 12 months from now. On average, SMBs are currently running five virtual machines (VM) in each physical machine.
