APRIL 2012
Since the cars public unveiling, where the focus was on demonstrating the cars key features and form, the teams efforts have now been shifted to address the function of this year's flagship vehicle. With the competition drawing ever closer and dynamic testing arranged for mid-June, we are currently working hard to turn design concepts into reality and are aiming to have a fully operational vehicle by the beginning of June. In last month's issue we introduced a new avenue of design development in the form of our double back plate design. This late design alteration came about when taking the rear end design from concept to embodiment; we discovered that some of the integral concepts such as suspension geometries and engine mounting would be very difficult to realise successfully. As a result it was back to the drawing board for many of the key components. This highlighted the fact that the design phase is an iterative process and that it is impossible to address all potential issues at the conceptual stage. By using issues faced at the embodiment and prototype stage to feed back into the design, we can ensure that we move the vehicle towards a comprehensive, robust and realisable solution. The process of taking conceptual design through to a functioning product is a very stressful time for everyone involved and often feels like for every progression there is a greater problem. However, each problem overcome is an 123456789 experience gained and with continual development and devotion I am confident that we can arrive at a competitive flagship vehicle that we can all be proud of. APRIL 2012
With exams and dissertations fresh on the minds of many of the team, everyone has had to pull together to maximise the progress on the car. Having set a preliminary testing date of the 16th of June, we must make sure to utilise the time we have to produce a fully working car which will be ready for testing and most importantly, for the competition. Here are some of the latest updates: With the drivers decided and the sheet metal fabricated in the drivers cockpit, the next stage is to allow them to sit comfortably within the car. In order to do this, the driver will find a comfortable position before seat foam will be used to mark out where they are sitting. The foam will then be allowed to set, holding the driver in place. To accommodate both drivers some compromise will have to be made, but as both drivers are of similar build this shouldnt arise much of a problem. An OBP Universal Kit car Pedal box was chosen for use on this years car. The next stage is to fit it to the car and make it adjustable to be suitable for both the drivers. The accelerator and clutch cables, as well as the brake lines, can then all be fitted.
The impact attenuator arrived from Italy earlier this month. This is a mandatory safety feature that aims to absorb 7350 Joules of energy in an impact. This is constructed from IMPAXX700 foam and will be attached to the chassis using 6 bolts as per the regulations.
The latest render shows our Car number for the competition is 157. This commemorates the 57th year since the death of this great engineer and the team looks forward to working with the same determination to succeed that he showed throughout his career.
APRIL 2012
The latest rear view render shows how the back plate has been adapted to its final design concept. Weight saving determined the look of this idea as well as being structurally sound. With all the geometries of the A-arms set and the differential brackets ready, the 2nd back plate is set to be machined. The exhaust and differential cover are also on show in this design which will both be made from alloy plate giving aesthetic appeal to the rear of the car. The jacking bar is highlighted in orange to adhere to the rules for the competition.
Behind the body panels will be the radiators for the cars coolant system. To get the maximum cooling power possible there will be one on each side of the car and in order to get maximum efficiency from these, they will be mounted perpendicular to the flow of air. Another major component group to arrive was the brake discs and calipers. With the first back plate specifically designed with slots to allow the discs to rotate through it and allow the whole design to be more compact and the differential mounting brackets designed to allow the calipers to attach directly to them, all the components are looking ready to come together as the final pieces are machined and ready to go.
