5-2-12

Understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software. 1. Verify experimentally the properties of rotations, reflections, and translations: 2. Understand that a two-dimensional figure is congruent to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, and translations; given two congruent figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the congruence between them. 3. Understand that a two-dimensional figure is similar to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations; given two similar two-dimensional figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the similarity between them. Technology Standards 1. Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes 2. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks 3. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources

a. Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project 4. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity 5. Technology Operations and Concepts Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. a. Understand and use technology systems Learning Objectives: Students will apply their knowledge with transformation that involves vocabulary such as symmetry, rotation, translations, and dilations. Students will be asked to use their knowledge of the internet to find my website to locate a link to resources on my website. Students will be able to use the link to review and do various activities with the review game under my resource links. If there is enough time students will be able to create their own tessellation using the various transformations they review under the review game. Students will be assessed by printing off the score they receive on the various review games. Students will then be assessed the next day with a quiz on the various transformations. Introduce the Learning Activity: I will inform students that they will have a quiz tomorrow so this class period will be review for the quiz that will be held tomorrow. We will as a class first go over the vocabulary so I will ask the students to go to my website students.plattsburgh.edu/dlabo001. Then I will have the students click on resources and then click on tessellations and review. I will call on individual to read each vocabulary word and I will ask individual students to describe each vocabulary word in their own words. The vocabulary list will include 7 vocabulary words tessellation, rotation, reflections, translations, symmetry, transformations and dilations. The goal of this lesson is to get students to understand transformations in geometry. In order to get students interested after going over the vocabulary sheet students will be asked to review this vocabulary through review games and activities. Provide Information: Since this lesson is review, students should know most of the vocabulary that we will cover on the review sheet. Students should have previous knowledge of various transformations because we have covered in previous classes before. We will also go over the review of vocabulary sheet on website student.plattsburgh.edu/dlabo001 then click on resources then click on the first link tessellations and review. Students will go over the vocabulary as a class and call on individuals to read definitions. Students will then play a review game/activity and that link is under resources and then link math review. The website is http://www.ixl.com/promo?partner=bing&phrase=Search%20%208th%20grade%20geometry&u tm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=search%2B%2Bgrade%2Blevels%2B%2Bbroad%2B-%2BUS .The students will have to click on 8th grade. Then have students scroll down to transformation and I will have the students do four activities under transformation review, one review activity on dilation, one activity on rotation, one

activity on translations and one activity on reflections. I will walk around the room helping students if needed. Provide Practice: I will first start class off by informing students that they will be reviewing the vocabulary that they have learned in the last few classes on transformations and there will be a quiz in the next class period on it. Then I will have the students log on to my website student.plattsburgh.edu/dlabo001 . I will have the students click on resources then locate the link to tessellations and review or first link on resources page. I will call on individuals to look over the vocabulary and then I will call on individuals to read each vocabulary word. We will as a class go over the images on the sheet to review the vocabulary more in-depth and so the students get a deeper understanding of the words. The vocabulary list includes 7 vocabulary words tessellation, rotation, reflections, translations, symmetry, transformations and dilations. Once we go over the vocabulary info. I will then ask the students to go to my webpage student.plattsburgh.edu/dlabo001 then have the students click on resources and link number two (math review). Then once students get to that webpage have the students click on 8th grade and then have them scroll down to transformations. I will ask the students to do four activities under transformation review, one review activity on dilation, one activity on rotation, one activity on translations and one activity on reflections. I will ask the students to print off the results from each review activity. If students complete the review activity before the end of class I will ask students to use their creativity and use some of the vocabulary they just reviewed and create their own tessellation using my website student.plattsburgh.edu/dlabo001 then have students click on resources then have the students click on tessellation maker or third link on resources page. With 5 minute left of class I will inform the students to hand in their review activity results. Then I will remind the students of the quiz they will have on the review of vocabulary that was covered in class today. Finally, I will inform students that they can finish their tessellation for 5 bonus points for the quiz in the next class by printing them off. Provide Knowledge of Results: I will make sure that students understand the vocabulary by talking as a class and going over the vocabulary that will be on the quiz the next day. I will walk around the room while students are doing the activity to help students who need help or who are struggling. I will also monitor how the students are doing on the activities by having students print off their results from the activities that they will be doing on transformations. Written feedback will come from the quiz that the students will be taking the next day. Review the Activity: I will provide a sheet of the vocabulary that we have covered previously in other classes on transformations. The vocabulary sheet will be the same one that we will go over at the beginning of class on my website student.plattsburgh.edu/dlabo001 then click on resources and it is link one tessellation and review. So students will be able to review the vocabulary on my website and

will have a printed version also. The vocabulary sheet has 7 vocabulary words tessellation, rotation, reflections, translations, symmetry, transformations and dilations with a picture that represents each vocabulary word. Method of Assessment I will be using summative assessment by walking around the room seeing the students comprehension of the vocabulary. I will also have the students hand in their results of the review for activities under transformation review, one review activity on dilation, one activity on rotation, one activity on translations and one activity on reflections. The overall assessment will be a quiz on transformation vocabulary.
