First Word
Happy Mothers Day!
Strength and dignity are her clothing, And she smiles at the future. She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and bless her. Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised. Proverbs 31:25-28a; 30

Origin of the Special

While away last week in Ohio, I experienced an especially interesting week. Most importantly, I rejoiced in seeing my daughter, Allyson, graduate from Cedarville University with an Elementary Education degree. I also attended the Cedarville University Trustees meeting and spoke in Chapel for Answers in Genesis. Dr. Ken Ham is one of the nations leading biblical creationists. He gave me a tour of their amazing Creation Museum, where the gospel and the Christian worldview is uniquely presented in a series of displays, films, artifacts, and animatronical figures. It is truly worth visiting. I also enjoyed a rare look at their upcoming project, the Ark Encounter; an ambitious effort to build a full-scale Noahs ark. Dr. Ham showed a display featuring his Australian parents. They prepared him to be a defender of the faith and to hold to the foundational truth, In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1). Rather than acquiescing to the current evolutionary religion of so-called reason and science, he credits his parents with his spiritual upbringing and not natural selection. He is particularly grateful to his mother for what I call, the origin of the special, (not because of Darwins Origin of the Species). Christian mothers can reverse the tragic decision of Eve. Rather than being deceived (Genesis 3:13) and experience pain in childbirth (Genesis 3:16), they have been redeemed. They not only know good and evil but leave a legacy of faith, helping their children discover Gods special plan. This weekend as we honor our mothers, we thank God for those who brought us into the world, and especially for those who told us of Gods special love for us and His desire to recreate us in His image. May we be like Hannah and pray for our children and dedicate them to the Lord, the Creator and Sustainer (1 Samuel 1:27, 28). I thank God for my mother who taught me right and wrong and took me to church. I also praise the Lord for Janet and her influence on our three children. I honor her unique capacity to love, nurture, and be sensitive to the needs of our children. She is a great role model and encourager not only to our daughters and granddaughters, but to the women of our church. The birthing and molding of human beings is a far more important vocation than the making of material things. A godly mother provides the firm foundations upon which children can build their lives. Young Timothys sincere faith first dwelt in his grandmother, Lois, and in his single mother, Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5). Thats not only special but also supernatural. Spiritfilled women, whether they are mothers or not, can have an enormous impact on young people.
