What is Juice Feasting?

Juice feasting is an inexpensive way to cleanse, rebuild, rehydrate and alkalize your body. While juice feasting, you will get maximum nutrition while allowing your body to focus on detoxifying and healing. There are many different ways people choose to Juice Feast. There is no right or wrong way. We are all different and our bodies have different needs. You can juice feast for one day or over 90 days if you choose. It is always best to work with a professional who is knowledgeable in juice feasting along with your Health Care Provider if you have a health issue or choose to do an extended juice feast (over one week). Juice feasting is a self-empowering practice, accessible to all, even while working and meeting your daily obligations. Juice feasting will add years to your life and life to your years!

Different Ways to Juice Feast

These are in order from the longest juice feast to the least intense Modified Juice Feast. Choose the starting point that works best for you. I recommend experiencing an extended juice feast of at least 30 days for optimum wellness.

Juice Feast for 92 days

A number of people have done extended juice feasting for 92 days or longer following the Juice Feasting Program at http://juicefeasting.com.

Juice Feast for One Month, Twice a Year

A biannual juice feast of 30 day intervals is a great way to detoxify your body and mind.

Juice Feast on Weekends

Some people find its easier to juice feast one weekend a month, when they have more time to dedicate to themselves and are in the comfort of their home. They then feel more energized during the week.

www.reneoswald.com | Different Ways to Juice Feast

Juice Feast for One Week at a Time

This is often done two to four times a year. This is a very good way to detox and feel more energized.

Juice Feast for One Day a Week

Juice feast with fruit or vegetable juices or a combination of both, for 24 hours, once a week. Many people have found this to be the best way to start. They say it reduced the stress and offered a more gradual transition.

Juice Feast with Green Smoothies

Alternate drinking juice for three days, and then drink green smoothies (juice with the pulp; see recipes in the Transitioning to Living Cuisine book) for three days for a total of 7-30 days or longer. or Drink a quart of juice around 7 am and another one at 10 am, then drink 1 quart of green smoothie or energy soup (see recipes in the Transitioning to Living Cuisine book) around 1 pm and 4 pm. Anytime you are hungry, drink more juices or smoothies.

10

Juice Feast/Fruit Feast

Drink 1 quart of juice three times a day and eat juicy fruits; such as melons, pineapple, mangoes, pears or grapes whenever you desire.

Juice Feast/Veggie Feast

Drink 1 quart of juice three times a day and eat juicy vegetables; such as cucumbers, celery, red peppers, or tomatoes whenever you desire.

Juice Feast/Salad Feast

Drink 1 quart of juice three times a day and eat a salad (preferably with a healthy, homemade dressing) as many times as you like during the day.

Juice Feast/Raw Food Feast

Drink 1 quart of juice three times a day and eat as many raw foods as you desire in between juices. Eating mostly whole raw foods, with minimal fat, is optimum for the best cleansing effect.

11

Juice Feast Twice a Day

Another way to juice feast is to drink a quart of juice for breakfast and lunch and then eating a salad and/or energy soup for dinner.

Juice Feast for Breakfast

Drink a quart of juice in the morning for an amazing true energy boost without the side effects of caffeine.

12

Why its Called Juice Feasting

The difference between juice fasting and juice feasting is abundance. With juice fasting it is common to have only 3-4 glasses of juice a day, totaling 24-32 ounces. With juice feasting there is no deprivation. You should consume a minimum of 1 gallon of juice a day (yes...128 oz.). Im only 105 lb. and I consumed 160 oz. per day when I was juice feasting. I also worked out for about two hours a day, which increased the amount required. Because you are getting all the nutrients you need, you will find you have an abundance of energy. This makes it possible to do an extended juice feast while maintaining your normal daily lifestyle. Because you are able to extend the length of the feast, you will have a more thorough cleansing of your body at the cellular level.

www.reneoswald.com | Why its Called Juice Feasting

13

The Rules of Juice Feasting

There are no rules if you are only drinking 1 quart of juice a day in conjunction with your other meals. However, if you are only consuming juices, it is important to get the required amounts of nutrient dense foods for a proper balance. Consume 1/2 lb. of leafy greens and 3 large stalks of celery in every quart of juice Consume a minimum of 4 quarts of juice per day (every 2-3 hours during the day) Find juice combinations that you love Add what you need to make it taste great Add superfoods and supplements as necessary

www.reneoswald.com | The Rules of Juice Feasting

14

The fruits and vegetables used in your juice should be organic and preferably locally grown and in season.

When juice feasting, it is important to drink approximately 1 quart of juice every 2-3 hours. If we wait longer than 3 hours, we become extremely hungry and thats when unhealthy cravings return. I have found that those people that always have juice available find it easy and enjoyable to stay on a juice feast.

www.reneoswald.com | The Rules of Juice Feasting

15

Keep Moving!
It is very important to have regular bowel movements while juice feasting to eliminate toxins from the body. Because there is no fiber in freshly squeezed juice, some people experience a decrease in bowel movements. To help keep your bowels regular, take up to 1 Tablespoon MSM powder and 1/2 lemon juiced in 16-32 oz. of water first thing in the morning. Take Cascara Sagrada or liquid bentonite and psyllium husks with water or juice if you are having less than 2-3 bowel movements a day. Enemas may be necessary to release toxins during a cleansing reaction and are usually most effective first thing in the morning.

Kitchen Aids
These essential kitchen accessories will help reduce your time in the kitchen and make juice feasting more of a pleasure.

Knives:
6-7 vegetable knife (my favorite is the MAC knife) 3 paring knife 6-7 serrated knife

Vegetable peeler:
A sharp vegetable peeler, like the one made by OXO, will reduce preparation time. The ergonomic grip helps avoid wrist strain.

Cutting board:
Its important to have a cutting board dedicated to only fruits and vegetables. This helps prevent crosscontamination from possible harmful bacteria that may be present in meat products. I also prefer wooden cutting boards because theyre better for our knives.

17

High-Speed Blender:

My favorite high-speed blender is the Vita-Mix. In my opinion, this is the most essential kitchen appliance. Ive had a Vita Mix for over 20 years and it has played an integral part in helping me achieve a healthy life. Many people are shocked when they find out what a high-speed blender costs, but after they use this blender and compare it to others, they are convinced it is worth the extra cash. Another benefit of purchasing a Vita-Mix is their money-back guarantee. If you are not satisfied with the blender within 30 days of purchase you can send it back for a full refund. Im excited to say that in the 20 years that Ive been telling people about the Vita-Mix, Ive never known anyone that wanted to send it back. *See the video demonstration (video #31) on juicing with a high-speed blender and a juice bag at http://reneoswald.com/videos.html

Make it Fast and Easy!

When I started juice feasting I used a juicer for the first 5 days. I found it very time-consuming. I made 5 quarts per day, with each juice taking over 45 minutes to make and clean the equipment. About an hour later I would start the whole procedure again. I did this 5 times a day. I found I was spending over 4 hours per day preparing my juices. I work from home, so it was possible to continue, but I thought there must be a better way. The solution came to me when I had to be away from home. After 5 days on the juice feast I had to go out of town for 2 days and I prepared 10 quarts of juice to take with me. I vacuum sealed the glass jars, hoping it would retain the nutrients. Although it was faster to prepare all these juices at once, I was very disappointed in the taste of the juice. I was convinced there was an enormous loss of nutrients due to my lack of energy. When I came home my husband reminded me of the research by Victoria Boutenko which showed the nutrient retention characteristic of green smoothies from the inclusion of the pulp. Since there is such a protective factor of the nutrients from the inclusion of the fiber in green smoothies, I decided to give it a try.

www.reneoswald.com | Make it Fast and Easy!

21

The next day I blended the fruits and vegetables for all 5 quarts of my juices in the Vita-Mix. I vacuum sealed and refrigerated these green smoothies until needed. When I was hungry, about every 2-3 hours, I squeezed them through a juice bag. I was amazed how fresh they tasted. Having healthy juices ready for the entire day in less than an hour was an added benefit. This procedure is explained in more detail starting on page 37.

Juice Feasting Simplified

If you are exclusively juicing, it is important to drink a minimum of 4 quarts of juice per day to stay well nourished. For every quart of juice, use 1/2 lb. of greens, 3-4 stalks of celery and up to 3 different fruits or vegetables. The following lists are some of the common foods used in juicing. There are juice recipes included in this book, however you can make your own creations by looking over the list of fruits and vegetables that follow!

Red Leaf Lettuce Romaine Lettuce Spinach Sunflower Greens Swiss Chard Tatsoi Watercress

I intentionally left buckwheat greens off the list because they should be eaten sparingly. They contain a substance called fagopyrin, which can cause fagopyrism.
www.reneoswald.com | Greens Used in Juicing 24

The symptoms of fagopyrism are an extreme sensitivity to touch, sunlight and cold. My husband and I both suffered from this malady when we were putting large amounts of buckwheat greens in our daily smoothies. It took about 30 days for the symptoms to go away after we stopped eating the greens. Some of the living foods retreats used buckwheat greens in their juices in the past, but those that are aware of this problem no longer juice buckwheat greens.

Additions to Your Juices

For additional flavor and nutritional value, add one or two of the following foods to your juice. If you are having cravings for solid foods, you may want to avoid the spices since they cause some people to crave solid foods. Apples Lemon Garlic greens Onion greens Ginger Root Fresh Horseradish Cayenne Cinnamon, Nutmeg or Cardamom (good with apples, sweet potato or any of the winter squashes) Fresh herbs (oregano, basil, cilantro, mint, dill, fennel, chives, lemon balm, lemon thyme) 2 Burdock root in one juice per day is a great cleanser for the liver Fresh Thai young Coconut water is a wonderful drink while feasting. Freeze the coconut meat to enjoy after your juice feast. Take up to 1 Tablespoon hemp oil or flax oil (great for Omega-3 Fatty Acid) once a day, preferably at the last juice of the day if needed to prevent excess weight loss or if you are low in energy.

www.reneoswald.com | Additions to Your Juices

28

For necessary minerals consume 1/4 teaspoon kelp in one of your juices every day Take up to 1 Tablespoon bee pollen once a day for added minerals (best to eat separately rather than adding it to your juice for the best assimilation and also great opportunity to chew) Wheat Grass Juice Spirulina or chlorella Blue Green Algae, such as E3Live Barley green powder

If juice feasting for longer that one week consult with a health care professional who is knowledgeable in juice feasting for guidance and read the information available at http://juicefeasting.com.

Juicing on the Go
I am amazed at how many juice bars have opened up in the last few years.

This is an organic juice bar that I recently found in Stuart, FL at a gas station called Planet Ozone! They are the first Green gas station in the US. Check them out at http://planetozone.net/welcome/ Most of the people working at juice bars are very accommodating and will make a juice with whatever fruits or vegetables you request. You can also take enough juice (with the pulp) to last up to 2 days for a weekend adventure (see page 37 for details). Store them in vacuum sealed glass jars in a cooler. Also, remember to take along your juice bag and a bowl to squeeze the juice into. Most hotels will provide a refrigerator upon request.

30

Getting Started
One of the most common mistakes people make when juice feasting is not getting enough greens in their juices. Greens are the most essential component of every juice.

This is 2 lbs. of greens which will make 4 quarts of juice for one day. (One bunch of greens is usually about 1/2 lb.)

The recipes that follow contain 1/2 lb. of greens and 2-3 stalks of celery in every quart of juice. If you follow these guidelines you will get over 1200 mg. of calcium per day (RDA is 1000 mg.) and all the other nutrients your body needs.
www.reneoswald.com | Getting Started 31

When preparing the ingredients for our juice feast always strive for the best ingredients, preferably organic and locally grown if possible.

To save money during a juice feast, try to plan it when more locally grown foods are available. They are fresher than the off-season and less expensive.

www.reneoswald.com | Getting Started

32

For those times when you have trouble finding organically grown produce, it is important to know which produce is the highest and lowest in detected pesticides. The Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org) provides the following lists on their website at www.ewg.org. You may find it helpful to copy this information to take with you as you shop.

Highest in Pesticides:
Peach Apple Bell Pepper Celery Nectarines Strawberries Cherries Kale Lettuce Grapes-Imported Carrot Pear

Lowest in Pesticides:
Onion Avocado* Sweet Corn* Pineapple Mango* Asparagus Sweet Peas Kiwi Cabbage Eggplant* Papaya* Watermelon Broccoli Tomato Sweet Potato

*Avocado, Banana, Corn, Durian, Eggplant, Mango and Papaya are not commonly used in juicing because of their high fat, starch or fiber content.
www.reneoswald.com | Getting Started 33

Its easiest on your body to use 5 or less ingredients in each juice. Using different fruits and vegetables and alternating the greens will insure proper nutrient intake. There are small amounts of natural toxins, called alkaloids, on all greens. However, each green contains a different alkaloid; so generally, if you eat a variety of greens you wont have any problems. Scientists believe that these alkaloids are there to prevent us from eating the entire crop so there will always be more for future generations. You will find out naturally, how much is safe to consume. When you eat a green in moderation it tastes great, but when youve had enough, your body will tell you by the taste. It generally starts to taste bitter and can even cause nausea. You may notice your mouth becomes very dry. This bitter reaction is very obvious to most people when they eat the stronger greens, like chard, collards, arugula and dandelion. Sunflower greens and spinach taste very mild to most people until their body has had enough, then they tend to make the mouth feel very dry. Listen to your body and only eat the amount you need. Try to use a new green for your next juice.

www.reneoswald.com | Getting Started

34

Its best to start with the milder greens, such as Romaine lettuce, Boston Lettuce, Red or Green leaf lettuce, Spinach, Bibb lettuce and Bok Choy.

The darker leafy greens are the most nutrient dense, but they do take time to get accustomed to. Use sparingly until your body adjusts to them. As you adapt to more greens in your diet you will want to try these darker greens, like Beet Greens, Swiss Chard, Kale, Arugula, Cilantro, Parsley, Watercress and Collards.

www.reneoswald.com | Getting Started

35

The strongest varieties of greens are usually used sparingly. These include greens such as dandelion, broccoli sprouts, radish greens and mustard greens. Live on the wild side! Take a class in identifying wild edibles in your area. You may get lucky and find some purslane. (pictured here) These greens are nutrient dense and loaded with flavor!

My Juicing Technique
Gather enough food to make 4 quarts of juice. (see recipes starting on page 46.

www.reneoswald.com | My Juicing Technique

37

Divide the sprouts into 4 bowls.

Add 3 stalks of celery to each bowl.

www.reneoswald.com | My Juicing Technique

38

Add 1/2 cucumber to each bowl.

Divide the remaining ingredients into each bowl.

www.reneoswald.com | My Juicing Technique

39

Add one beet (with greens), 1/2 red pepper and 1 apple to one of the bowls. (Beety Pepper Juice recipe on page 63)

Add 4 carrots and 1/2 red pepper and one apple to another bowl. (Carrot Pepper Juice recipe on page 64)

Add 2 slice of fresh pineapple (with core) and one orange (peeled and seeds removed) to another bowl. (Orange Pineapple Juice recipe on page 49)
www.reneoswald.com | My Juicing Technique 40

Add 2 grapefruit (peeled and seeds removed) to the last bowl. (Grapefruit Juice recipe on page 50)

Place 1/2 of the ingredients from one bowl into the blender container(start with the softest ingredients and it will run smoother)

www.reneoswald.com | My Juicing Technique

41

Blend on high speed, using the tamper, until smooth. Add remaining ingredients from that one bowl and blend again until smooth.

Add 1/2 lb. of the leafy greens and blend with tamper, until smooth.

www.reneoswald.com | My Juicing Technique

42

This is 2 lb. of greens used to make 4 quarts of juice for one day. (one bunch of greens is usually about 1/2 lb.)

Pour the blended contents into glass quart jars and labeled each jar.

Vacuum seal every jar for increased freshness. (See Pump-N-Seal at http://reneoswald.com/store.html)
www.reneoswald.com | My Juicing Technique 43

When you feel hungry (about every 2-3 hours) pour the contents of one jar into the juice bag and squeeze out the fresh juice. This should only take 2-3 minutes. Rinse out the bag and place it in the freezer until the next meal.

I prefer the organic cotton bags rather than the nylon mesh bags because they are more durable and I like the natural component of organic cotton. I found that the nylon mesh bags started coming apart after about 2 weeks of juicing. Im still using the same organic cotton bags that I started with over 2 years ago and I like the fact that its a natural, organic product touching my food. When Im doing long term juicing I place the juice bag in the freezer between juicing sessions to keep it fresh and prevent molding.
www.reneoswald.com | My Juicing Technique 44

This is the amount of fruits and vegetables needed for two days of juice feasting. It will make 4-5 quarts of juice for one person.

45

Green Fruity Juices

You will notice I have used the milder leafy greens in these recipes. As your body adapts to the higher chlorophyll greens try substituting the darker greens into your juices, like those listed on page 35. You can use a juicer to make these recipes or follow my blender technique on page 37.

Green Veggie Juices

For those concerned with adding apples to your vegetable juices, these are always optional and granny smith apples are the lowest on the glycemic index. They were included to improve the taste. I have worked with many people who have found the vegetable juices to be unpalatable (or in their words, disgusting). After I added an apple, they really enjoyed the juice. Therefore, even though it might not be the best food combination, I think its more important to make a juice that is pleasant tasting.

Helping the Toxins Pass on By If you are not feeling fantastic, you may be having a Cleansing Reaction. This means your body may be detoxifying too fast. Common cleansing reactions are sluggishness, headaches, nausea, bloating, skin rashes, acne, bad breath, increased body odor and constipation or diarrhea. If your symptoms are different or you are unsure of the severity, seek prompt care from a health professional who is knowledgeable in juice feasting. Cleansing reactions are caused from the increased release of toxins as your body is trying to heal. The following techniques will help the toxins pass through your body. Drink pure filtered water with lemon juice. Drink 1 Tablespoon ginger juice in a glass of water with lemon (this works well to relieve nausea). For stomach distress, drink peppermint tea or rub peppermint oil on your stomach. Digestive enzymes are always helpful to improve digestion

If having diarrhea, take 1 tablespoon of liquid bentonite mixed with 1 teaspoon psyllium in 8 oz. of water up to 3 times a day. Take Cascara Sagrada if necessary if you are having less than 2 bowel movements a day. If you have heavy metal toxicity or still have mercury fillings in your teeth, juice cilantro and add chlorella to your juices. Dry Skin Brushing for 5-10 minutes before showering helps release toxins through the skin. Brush extremities in long strokes toward the heart. You can find nice natural bristle brushes for Skin Brushing at most health food stores. Follow the skin brushing with an intermittent hot/cold shower. This stimulates your lymphatic system and helps with the elimination of toxins. For the shower, alternate 1 minute of hot, then 1 minute of cold 5 times for a total of 10 minutes. Start with hot water and end with cold water. Practice deep breathing exercises several times a day to release toxins through the lungs.

Have an enema or colonic. Use warm, filtered water and try to retain the water for 15-20 minutes as you massage your lower abdomen for the best release of toxins. After the enema, insert 1-2 oz. of wheat grass juice for an amazing lift in energy! For sinus congestion detox headache--Place 3 Tablespoons of ginger in a small cheesecloth bag, small cloth tea bag or nylon stocking. Place it in a hot foot bath and soak your feet or place the ginger in a hot bath and enjoy a hot ginger bath. This helps to both release toxins from the sinuses and from your entire body when taking a full bath. For a less messy bath, place the ginger in a small cheesecloth bag or old nylon stocking. Another remedy for sinus congestion or headache is nasal irrigation with a neti pot. Fill the neti pot with 1 cup warm filtered water and 1/4 teaspoon Himalayan sea salt. There are many demonstrations of how to use the neti pot on the internet. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic process that is reported to heal various diseases as well as detoxify your body allowing for optimum health. Swish 1 Tablespoon of sesame or coconut oil in your mouth for 20 minutes each morning upon rising. It is important that you do it as soon as you wake, before putting anything in your mouth, including water.

Swish and move your tongue around inside your mouth for added benefit. After 20 minutes spit out the oil into the toilet. It may look white or yellow due to the release of toxins. Rinse with clear water a few times. Rinsing a third time with food-grade hydrogen peroxide helps clear out any residual toxins in the mouth. This procedure can be done every morning indefinitely for good oral hygiene and toxin release.

Coming Off the Juice Feast

Its best for your body to gently reintroduce solid foods if youve been juice feasting for more that 3-4 days. If you have juice feasted longer than 4 days I recommend consulting with your health care professional who is experienced with juice feasting and read the information available at http://juicefeasting.com When you reintroduce solids to your body, chew your food thoroughly for the best digestion and start by introducing the juiciest fruits and vegetables. If you find yourself still hungry after following this procedure, feel free to have more juice. 1st Day After Juice Feasting Continue drinking 3-4 quarts of juice, and eat about one cup of juicy fruit 3 times during the day or one cup of green smoothie 3 times during the day. 2nd Day After Juice Feasting Drink 2 quarts of juice and eat two cups of fruit three times during the day or two cups of Green Smoothie or Energy Soup three times during the day.

My Juice Feasting Journey

This is my personal story and I am in no way telling you that this is the direction you should take. We are all different and what is right for one person may not be right for another. I recommend working with a holistic health care professional who is experienced with your particular health issue. I chose to do an extended juice feast in 2007 because of a sudden, fast-changing growth on my forehead near my hairline. I also starting having a vision problem in my left eye at the same time. I was seeing what looked like a laser light beam across my left eye. It was worrisome because it was a raised area that had been there for several years and was suddenly growing and changing very quickly. Since I didnt want to waste thousands of dollars for a diagnosis and I would have tried juice feasting no matter what it was, I chose to start my juice feast. After 12 days of juice feasting the growth was starting to flake off and was about half the original size. By day 17 it was completely gone, as seen in the photo below.

Before Juice Feasting

After 17 days of Juice Feasting

I continued on the juice feast for a total of 47 days, with a 4 week break after 30 days, mainly drinking green smoothies and eating salads. I started the juice feast back up again after the 30 days because even though the growth was gone, I was still having vision problems. After 17 days of juice feasting the second time, my vision problems completely went away and I havent experienced any further problems in over 2 years.

About the Author:

As a Registered Nurse, Ren was confident the medical world could fix everything. She thought that even the effects of a poor diet and extreme job stress could be repaired by the miracles of modern medicine. However, a confrontation with a debilitating disease left her hopeless. Ren looked to her past for answers. She recalled from her hospital experience in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) how fast the well nourished patients recovered. In the delivery room she had observed how the healthier moms had much easier births and happier babies. In Neonatal ICU she witnessed the magic of our species most important nourishment, breast milk. The premature babies who received breast milk thrived in comparison to the ones on synthetic simulations. As a Lactation Consultant, (IBCLC) and mother of breastfeeding twins she witnessed first hand how babies and children thrive on natures finest. While working as administrator and head nurse of a Home for Severely Handicapped Children, she removed all artificial dyes and sugars from the childrens diet. Within days the children were calmer and happier than ever. Fortunately Ren woke up to the idea that there are no short-cuts to health and opted for a natural approach. After recovering from this incurable auto-immune disease, Ren decided to use these bonus years to help others find and maintain health. By creating the Transitioning to Living Cuisine (TLC) program, she has helped hundreds of people improve their health and happiness. Her videos and email advise compliment the TLC text and demonstrate how committed she is to being there for you. After sampling her delicious foods youll hear yourself say, Wow, I really did improve my health without giving up taste. Her life passion is to be there for all those needing a little help on their journey to wellness. rene.oswald@att.net
