Sandbagging started Thank you

While there is still no warning of serious threat from the River Forecast Centre, City works crews were sandbagging yesternday, near McCallum Gardens on Voght St. where the Nicola River runs along side it. The City of Merritt has stockpiled 45,000 sandbags in anticipation that the Coldwater and Nicola rivers may overflow their banks. They are being filled at the public works yard and stored at the fire hall. Fire Chief Dave Tomkinson, also in charge of Emergency Services, is warning that residents living adjacent to the Nicola River and Coldwater Rivers may experience water infiltration into the pipes and basements as a result of groundwater seepage and/or basement drain backups. The City of Merritt urges residents living along the rivers or traveling through the area to be alert for potentially damaging flows or obstructions which should be reported to City Hall at 378-4224. And they ask that everyone keeps a respectful distance from river banks especially children and animals. Residents are also urged to pay attention to local media for current info.
