mechanical properties. Mandatory requirements are specified for: the minimum tensile strength, R~ 0.2 per cent proof stress,Rp 0.2; and percentageelongation, A. Most countries also specify impact values on either one or two grades, and give data on hardnessand predominant matrix structure, for information only. The tables set out overleaf show the mechanical properties given in the United Kingdom and EEC standards; also included are specifications from Japan, Norway, Sweden and USA, and the latest ISO standard. The current British standard was issued in 1985 and many customers requiring nodular iron castings may still specify these in accordance w.ith the previous standard, BS 2789: 1973; the grades from this standard have therefore beenincluded. . All values are given in SI units (N/mm2), non-SI metric units (kgf7mm2-also known as kp/mm2), and British Imperial units (tonffm2). The original units in which the specification was issued are printed in bold type and non-mandatory values in italic. The data provided in this broadsheet will help foundrymen who are asked to supply castings to foreign specifications to fmd the nearest British equivalent. It should be clearly unde(stood, however, that although there are similarities between the various national standards, the grades are not necessarily identical. It is always advisable to consult the original standards for details of production, preparation of test pieces, etc. These are listed below and may be borrowed from BClRA by members, or purchased from the British Standards Institution.
